By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
At the point where the space you want scented is connected rather than closed, and where the volume of it starts approaching a meaningful fraction of the machine’s rating. Vaayu is rated to 1000 m³ — roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, and that figure is not an adjective. It is a threshold you can test with a tape measure in twenty minutes. In practice there are four homes where it is the right purchase: an open-plan living-dining that runs into the rest of the flat, a whole floor, a villa across levels, and any home where the real ambition is one machine scenting everything on a schedule rather than a device in each room. Below those, a personal device or a room machine does the job and the extra ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 buys square feet you do not have.
Quick answers — read this first
The measurement, not the adjective: Vaayu ₹11,999 is rated to 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft. Measure the floor area of every space whose door normally stays open, add it up, and compare.

Below about a quarter of the rating — one bedroom, a study, a single closed room — it is over-specified and the answer is Sukoon ₹1,899 (270–320 sq ft) or Safar ₹3,999 (personal scale, named and sold as a car and travel diffuser, no published room coverage).

Around a third to a half of the rating — an open-plan living-dining flowing into a passage and bedrooms — it becomes defensible, because one machine replaces three.

At or above half the rating — a whole floor, a villa, a large home, a clinic, a salon, a showroom, a reception — it is simply the correct machine.

The honest gap: between Safar and Vaayu, SOSA has no mid-sized waterless nebuliser for one room. And Megh ₹3,499 is never the answer to a coverage question — about 215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon.
The short answer
Short answer: when the space is connected and large. The four honest thresholds are an open-plan living-dining that is not shut off from the rest of the home, a whole floor of a house, a villa across levels, and the case that has nothing to do with size at all — wanting one machine to scent the entire flat on a schedule rather than owning four devices with four batteries and four timers. Any one of those four is a good reason. A large flat with every internal door habitually closed is not, because a closed door is a wall as far as fragrance transport is concerned.
How to test it yourself: walk the home with the doors in their normal daytime positions and add up the floor area of everything the air can move through freely. That figure — not the builder’s super built-up area, and not the number of bedrooms — is what to compare against 2,000–3,000 sq ft. If it comes to a few hundred square feet, you are buying a machine for a space fifteen times bigger than the one you have. If it runs into four figures, Vaayu starts to make arithmetic sense; above about half the rating it is the only sensible single purchase.
What you are actually buying at that scale: a 400ml refillable tank running up to about 90+ days, so you handle the machine a few times a year; a Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons with 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h run windows, a choice of days and adjustable intensity, so the home is scented for occupied hours only; a key-lock; under 38 dB, which SOSA states is quiet enough for a bedroom, clinic or office; 5W; freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting; CE, RoHS and SGS. Free shipping above ₹499. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with any hotel brand.
Straight answer
How large does a home have to be before Vaayu is the right machine?
1. Stop thinking in bedrooms and start thinking in connected volume. Fragrance goes where air goes. A four-bedroom flat with every door shut is, from a transport point of view, four small rooms and a corridor — not one large space. A two-bedroom flat with an open-plan living-dining, an open kitchen and the bedroom doors ajar is one large space. The first does not need Vaayu. The second might.

2. Measure it, because the number is testable. Add up the floor area of every space the air moves through freely with the doors in their normal positions. Compare that against 2,000–3,000 sq ft. SOSA states the rating as a range rather than a single figure because 1000 m³ is a volume, and it only becomes a floor area once you fix a ceiling height — taller rooms mean fewer square feet from the same rating, which is worth knowing if you live in an older building with generous ceilings.

3. Below roughly a quarter of the rating, the machine is over-specified. One bedroom, one study, one closed room — the fragrance has almost no distance to travel and a closed small volume reaches perceptible concentration on its own. You will run Vaayu at the bottom of its intensity range for its whole life. That is money spent on capacity behind a closed door.

4. Between roughly a third and a half of the rating, it becomes a sensible single purchase. This is the open-plan flat: living, dining, kitchen and passage as one connected volume with bedrooms opening off it. Here the argument is not "the space is enormous" but "one machine replaces three or four", and that is a genuinely good reason to spend ₹11,999 rather than ₹1,899 three times over.

5. At or above half the rating, it is simply correct. A whole floor, a villa across levels, a large home, a clinic, a salon, a showroom or a reception. At that scale nothing else in the range will do the job, and the specifications that look extravagant in a bedroom — a 400ml tank lasting up to about 90+ days, wall or HVAC mounting, scheduling across chosen days — become the reason you bought it.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: measure the connected floor area, not the flat. Under about a quarter of 2,000–3,000 sq ft, Vaayu is over-specified. Around a third to a half — an open-plan living-dining flowing into the rest of the home — it becomes sensible because one machine replaces several. At half the rating and above, a whole floor or a villa, it is the only single machine that works.
SOSA waterless cold-air scent diffuser for large connected spaces
What ₹11,999 is actually specified for
Vaayu · waterless cold-air nebuliser, 1000 m³ ₹11,999
Pressurised air atomises undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist that travels with the room’s own airflow — no water, no dilution, no heat, no added humidity, no white dust. Rated to 1000 m³, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. A 400ml refillable tank runs up to about 90+ days depending on intensity and scheduled hours, so this is a machine you handle a few times a year. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h, a choice of days, adjustable intensity and a key-lock. Under 38 dB — SOSA’s page states this is quiet enough for a bedroom, clinic or office. Freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, 5W, CE, RoHS and SGS.

The measurement that decides it, and the two numbers people use instead

Almost nobody buys a scenting machine against a measurement. They buy it against a description — "we have a big flat", "it’s a 3BHK", "the living room is quite open" — and descriptions are exactly where this decision goes wrong in both directions. The number that matters is the connected floor area with the doors in their normal daytime positions, and it is usually smaller than people expect in a flat and larger than they expect in a villa. Here is how to arrive at it, and what the three thresholds mean once you have.

1
THE MEASUREMENT
Connected floor area, with doors as they actually sit
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuserGarden Bloom₹799Walk the home the way air would. Start where the machine would stand and add the floor area of every space it can reach without passing a door you keep shut — living, dining, kitchen if it is open, passage, and any bedroom whose door genuinely stays ajar. Ignore the builder’s super built-up figure entirely, since it includes walls, balconies and a share of common areas that have nothing to do with the air in your rooms, and ignore the bedroom count, which tells you how a flat is partitioned rather than how big it is. Then compare your total against the 2,000–3,000 sq ft rating. If your ceilings are high, sit nearer the lower end of that range, because the same 1000 m³ of volume covers less floor when the room is taller.
The unasked question this answers: "did I get a weak product?" Usually not — it is usually the room. A device specified for one volume, put into a much larger one, reads as weak while performing exactly to specification. Sizing is the commonest cause of disappointment in this whole category.
2
THE CORRECTION
Air exchange, which can cancel a large machine entirely
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749A coverage rating assumes the air in the space stays there long enough to be scented. Air that leaves takes the fragrance with it, so a home with cross-ventilation running all day is not a home-fragrance environment during those hours — it becomes one the moment the windows close. Wind speed also rises with height, so a high-floor flat with a balcony door open exchanges air far more aggressively than a second-floor one. None of that is a reason to buy a bigger machine; it is a reason to run the machine during the closed hours and to put the scheduling to work. This is precisely what Vaayu’s 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h windows with a choice of days are for, and it is the single most useful feature it has in an Indian home.
The practical version: if the windows are open from six to eleven every morning, schedule around them rather than fighting them. Buying more capacity to overcome ventilation is the most expensive way to solve a timing problem.
3
THE OTHER REASON, WHICH IS NOT ABOUT SIZE
One system, or four devices
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuserSukoon₹1,899There is a completely legitimate reason to buy Vaayu that has nothing to do with your flat being enormous: you want one machine, set up once, doing the whole home on a schedule. Four devices in four rooms means four tanks or batteries, four intensity settings drifting apart, and four things to remember — and a home that smells subtly different in every room reads as ordinary rather than designed. One machine on one schedule in one scent is much closer to what a hotel actually does, and consistency is a larger part of that effect than intensity is. This is also why you can never find the diffuser in a hotel room: the scent is usually introduced into the building’s moving air rather than released from an object on a table, so there is no source to locate and no gradient to walk up.
Where this argument fails: if you want different scents in different rooms, or independent control of each, one machine is the wrong shape and several small ones is right — even though it costs more in total attention.

The four thresholds, stated as spaces rather than adjectives

Threshold one: an open-plan living-dining that is not shut off from the rest of the home. This is the commonest genuine case in an Indian flat. Living, dining and often an open kitchen form a single volume, and because there is no door between them, no single-room machine can hold them evenly — you get a good zone near the device and a fall-off across the rest. This is the point at which a room-rated machine stops being under-specified by a little and starts being under-specified by a lot. If the bedrooms open off that same volume and their doors stay ajar, you are already in the range where one Vaayu makes more sense than two or three smaller devices.

Threshold two: a whole floor. A duplex level, a floor of an independent house, or a flat where the intent is that everything on that level smells the same. Vaayu’s rating exists for exactly this shape of space, and the wall or HVAC mount is what makes it practical — the machine goes out of sight and delivers into air the building is already moving, rather than standing on a console pushing mist into a room. Threshold three: a villa across levels, where the further complication is that warm air rises and a machine on the ground floor is not scenting the first floor evenly no matter what its rating says. At that scale, mounting position matters more than intensity, and stair-wells and open landings become the transport route.

Threshold four, and the one that is not about square feet at all: you want the whole home scented on a schedule, from one machine, without touching anything. This is the hotel-consistency argument rather than the size argument, and it stands on its own. If the ambition is that the flat smells of one thing, at the same intensity, during the same hours every day, for months at a time, then a 400ml tank lasting up to about 90+ days, app scheduling across chosen days and a key-lock are not extravagances — they are the entire product. And beyond home scale the ladder continues into equipment that is genuinely commercial: Aangan at ₹25,999 for 8,000–10,000 sq ft and Meenar at ₹38,500 for 12,000–18,000 sq ft. Neither is a home recommendation and I mention them only so the top of the ladder is visible.

The threshold table
Where your connected space sits against a 2,000–3,000 sq ft rating
The space you actually want scented Against the rating The honest recommendation Price
One closed bedroom or study A small fraction — well under a tenth Not Vaayu. Sukoon covers it properly at 270–320 sq ft, or a reed if a fragrant zone is enough ₹749–₹1,899
A desk, a bedside, a small closed room — and only while you are in it Smaller still, and only for chosen hours Not Vaayu. Safar — waterless, undiluted, 3 speeds, 1/2/3-hour auto-off. Named and sold as a car and travel diffuser; no published room coverage ₹3,999
One large living room with the doors closed Roughly a tenth to a quarter Still over-specified. A 130ml reed for a zone, or Sukoon for real coverage of the room ₹1,349–₹1,899
Open-plan living-dining flowing into passage and bedrooms Roughly a third to a half Vaayu becomes sensible — one machine instead of three, on one schedule ₹11,999
A whole floor, a large home, a villa across levels Half the rating and above Vaayu, wall or HVAC mounted. Nothing else in the range will hold it ₹11,999
A clinic, a salon, a showroom, a reception At or near the rating Vaayu, with the key-lock earning its place in a space the public can reach ₹11,999
Above that — genuinely commercial floorplates Beyond the rating entirely Aangan 8,000–10,000 sq ft · Meenar 12,000–18,000 sq ft. Commercial only, never a home recommendation ₹25,999 / ₹38,500
The gap this table exposes: there is no row between "one closed room" and "the whole connected home" that is waterless. SOSA has no mid-sized waterless bedroom nebuliser — nothing between Safar’s personal scale and Vaayu’s 2,000–3,000 sq ft. And Megh at ₹3,499 does not fill it: six-litre tank, around 100 hours of runtime, about 215 sq ft of coverage — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon. It is a runtime and humidity machine.

Room scale, personal scale, and the machine for a connected home
The SOSA principle
A closed door is a wall as far as fragrance is concerned. What decides this purchase is not how many rooms you own but how much of your home is one connected volume.
Which is why a four-bedroom flat with every door shut needs less machine than a two-bedroom flat that is open all the way through.

If you measure and come out below the threshold

Most people who ask this question do come out below it, and the useful part of the answer is what to do instead rather than a consolation. If the target is one room, the honest three-way is a reed, Sukoon or Safar, and it tops out at ₹3,999. A reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 gives you a fragrant zone, silently, with no power, nothing to fill and about ₹13 to ₹15 a day; six fibre reeds is full projection and three is a soft bedside level with roughly double the life. Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the cheapest genuine room coverage in the range at 270–320 sq ft, running 16–18 hours on low with three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included — the trade being dilution, added humidity and refilling. Safar at ₹3,999 is the waterless option at personal scale, with the plain disclosure that it is named and sold as a car and travel diffuser and that no room-coverage figure has been published for it.

If the target is two or three separate rooms rather than one connected volume, the instinct is to buy two machines and it is usually the wrong shape. Two rooms is better served by two zones than by two machines — a bottle in each with different scents, which also avoids the trap of a home that smells identical everywhere and therefore stops registering at all within a week. The Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 is two 50ml bottles for exactly that reason. And if the rooms are connected after all — if the doors are open and the air moves between them — then you are not looking at two rooms, you are looking at one volume, and you should go back and measure it.

One more thing worth checking before any of this, because it costs nothing and it resolves a real share of these decisions. Sizing is the commonest cause of a product reading as weak. A 50ml reed is specified for up to about 150 sq ft and a 130ml above that, so a 50ml in a 300 sq ft open-plan room reads as disappointing while performing exactly to its specification. Check the bottle against the measured room, get it out of the draught and off the threshold, close the door for the hour before you want the room, and ask someone arriving from outside what they notice — because you adapt to your own home within minutes and cannot judge it. A visitor is a better instrument than you are.

The question is never how big the flat is. It is how much of the flat the air can cross without going through a door you keep shut — and that is a number you can measure this evening.

The honest gap No mid-sized waterless nebuliser exists at SOSA — nothing between Safar’s personal scale and Vaayu’s 2,000–3,000 sq ft Said plainly, because a reader who measures and lands between the two rungs deserves to know there is nothing there
Honest notes for buyers: Vaayu should be run on alcohol-free, water-free oils formulated for cold-air diffusion, such as the SOSA Hotel Collection; thick undiluted essential oils can clog the fine nozzle over time. Coverage is stated as up to 1000 m³ and translates to roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft depending on ceiling height, layout, air exchange and settings. Safar is named and sold as a car and travel diffuser, has no published room-coverage figure, runs on a 1, 2 or 3-hour auto-off and needs recharging. Aangan ₹25,999 and Meenar ₹38,500 are commercial HVAC systems and are never a home recommendation. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free, on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, climate-tested at 45°C and 85% RH, composed in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection cannot be swapped in either direction, and there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill, never a first purchase. If the rooms are separate rather than connected
Fresh & Grounded duo · two 50ml bottles ₹1,548
A home divided by doors is not one volume, and buying a machine rated for a floor will not change that — a closed door stops fragrance as effectively as a wall. The better structure for separated rooms is two zones with two different scents: Morning Freshness where the day starts and Mountain Breeze where you think, six fibre reeds each, refillable glass, no socket and nothing to fill. It also avoids the quiet failure of a home that smells identical everywhere, which stops registering as a smell within about a week. It will still give you fragrant zones rather than an evenly fragranced home — that is the design of the format, not a fault.

A note from Sonal

I wanted this page to give thresholds rather than adjectives, because "large home" means something different to every person who writes to us and nobody can buy against it. Vaayu is rated to 1000 m³ and that is a number you can hold a tape measure against. Add up the connected floor area, compare, and the decision stops being a matter of taste. Most people who ask come out well below the threshold, and I would far rather they found that out on this page than after the box arrived.

The correction I make most often is about doors. People describe a flat by its bedroom count, but fragrance does not travel through partitions — it travels through air, and a closed door ends the journey. A three-bedroom flat where every door is shut is three small rooms, and a two-bedroom flat that is open all the way through is one large space. The second one needs more machine than the first, which is exactly the opposite of what the property listing would suggest.

And I will keep saying the uncomfortable part. If your measurement lands in the middle — too big for one room, nowhere near a floor — our range has nothing waterless for you between Safar and Vaayu, and I am not going to pretend Megh fills the gap when it covers about 215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon. In that middle ground the truthful options are a Sukoon in the room that matters most with a reed in the next one, or a Vaayu bought on the "one system for the whole home" argument rather than the size argument, which is a fair reason to buy it even when the arithmetic is generous. Everything is composed in Pune, and part of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does Vaayu actually cover?
Up to 1000 m³, which SOSA states as roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. It is expressed as a range because 1000 m³ is a volume, and a volume only becomes a floor area once a ceiling height is fixed — taller rooms mean fewer square feet from the same rating. Layout matters as much as area: a rating assumes the air can actually move through the space, so closed internal doors and heavy cross-ventilation both reduce what any machine achieves in practice.
Is a 3BHK large enough for Vaayu?
The bedroom count does not answer it. Measure the connected floor area with the doors in their normal daytime positions. A three-bedroom flat where all the internal doors stay closed behaves as several small rooms and does not need it; a smaller flat with an open-plan living-dining running into the passage and bedrooms may well. If your connected area comes to roughly a third of the rating or more, one Vaayu on a schedule is a sensible purchase because it replaces three separate devices.
Should I buy two smaller machines instead of one Vaayu?
Only if you want different scents in different rooms, or genuinely independent control of each. Otherwise two machines means two tanks or batteries, two intensity settings that drift apart and two things to remember — and a home that smells subtly different room to room reads as ordinary rather than designed. Where the rooms are connected, a single machine rated to 2,000–3,000 sq ft covers both and more, so buying two is usually the wrong shape rather than the expensive one.
Would Megh work for a large home instead?
No, and this is the easiest specification in the range to misread. Megh at ₹3,499 has a six-litre tank and around a hundred hours of runtime, but it covers only about 215 sq ft — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon at 270–320. Tank size, price and coverage are three separate specifications, and Megh is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade.
Do open windows change which machine I need?
They change when to run it rather than what to buy. Air that leaves takes the fragrance with it, so a home cross-ventilated all day is not a home-fragrance environment during those hours and becomes one the moment the windows close. Wind speed also rises with height, so a high-floor balcony door exchanges air far more aggressively than a low-floor window. The fix is scheduling around the open hours — which is exactly what Vaayu’s 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h windows with a choice of days are for — not buying more capacity to fight the ventilation.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on the point at which a home becomes large enough for the SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air diffuser rather than a personal or single-room device. Thresholds in this guide are derived from Vaayu’s published rating of up to 1000 m³ (roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft) and are offered as proportions of that rating, not as measured performance claims. Descriptions of air movement, air exchange, atomisation and olfactory adaptation are explanations of ordinary physical and perceptual behaviour, not measurements of a specific SOSA test. Review quotations are from verified SOSA buyers.

Facts verified August 2026: Three diffusion mechanisms are described — passive capillary (reed diffusers), ultrasonic water mist (Boond ₹899, 300ml, up to ~150 sq ft, ~6 hours, USB, night light; Sukoon ₹1,899, 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included; Megh ₹3,499, 6L tank, ~100 hours runtime, ~215 sq ft, which is less coverage than Sukoon) and waterless cold-air nebulising (Safar ₹3,999, 20ml bottle, 2000 mAh Type-C battery, up to 10 hours continuous or around 30 hours intermittent, 3 speeds, 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer, 6.9 cm, named and sold as a car and travel diffuser with car, handbag, desk, bedside and hotel room among its stated uses, no published room-coverage figure; Vaayu ₹11,999, coverage up to 1000 m³ or roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft, 400ml refillable tank lasting up to about 90+ days, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h run windows, choice of days, adjustable mist intensity, key-lock, under 38 dB which SOSA states is quiet enough for a bedroom, clinic or office, freestanding or wall/HVAC mount, 5W, CE, RoHS, SGS). Cold-air machines are intended for alcohol-free, water-free oils formulated for cold-air diffusion, such as the SOSA Hotel Collection; thick undiluted essential oils can clog the nozzle over time. Aangan ₹25,999 covers 8,000–10,000 sq ft and Meenar ₹38,500 covers 12,000–18,000 sq ft; both are commercial HVAC systems and neither is a home recommendation. SOSA reed diffusers: five scents, 50ml ₹749–₹849 lasting 6–8 weeks and suiting rooms up to ~150 sq ft, 130ml ₹1,249–₹1,349 lasting 14–18 weeks and suiting above 150 sq ft, six fibre reeds included and flipped every 3–5 days, about ₹13–₹15 a day, heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, refillable glass bottle, climate-tested at 45°C and 85% RH, composed in Pune. Duos are two 50ml bottles at ₹1,498–₹1,598; refills 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499, oil only and never a first purchase. Hotel Collection fragrance oils are water-based and ultrasonic-only at 15ml ₹299 (a refill), 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799 and a pack of seven at ₹1,799; they cannot be used in reed diffusers and reed oil cannot be used in ultrasonic machines, so no hotel-inspired reed diffuser exists. No health, air-quality, allergy or antimicrobial claims are made, and fragrance does not remove a smell — source, then ventilation, then fragrance. Free shipping above ₹499.
