Why a single figure cannot answer this question

The reason nobody gives you a straight price is that two different kinds of spending are hiding inside the question, and they behave in opposite ways. Hardware is capital: large, one-off, and finished the day it arrives. Fragrance is consumption: small, repeating, and open-ended. Quote only the hardware and you look expensive and slightly dishonest. Quote only the fragrance and you look cheap and slightly dishonest. The useful answer is both, kept apart, with a time period attached — which is why every table on this page has a "once" column and a "per month" column rather than one grand total pretending to be an answer.

The second reason is that the hardware number is set by something most people have not decided yet: how many rooms they are actually going to scent. That is not the same as how many rooms they have. A 1,300 sq ft 3BHK contains a living-dining zone, three bedrooms, a kitchen, two bathrooms and a passage — nine spaces if you count doors, and about three worth spending ₹1,899 on. Fragrance does not pass through a closed door, so each closed room is its own separate purchase, and each closed room you decide to leave alone is ₹1,899 saved immediately and ₹36 a month saved for as long as you live there. The budget is therefore decided by a floor plan and a bit of honesty about where you spend your evenings, long before it is decided by a price list.

So a studio is ₹1,899, a 1BHK is ₹1,899 or ₹3,798 depending on that door, a 2BHK is usually ₹3,798, a 3BHK ₹5,697 and a 4BHK ₹7,596. A Boond at ₹899 is the correct machine for a room under about 150 sq ft — a small second bedroom, a study, a child's room — and swapping one Sukoon for a Boond takes ₹1,000 off the total without costing you anything in that room.

The rule: for more area, buy more Sukoons. Never a Megh — at ₹3,499 it covers 215 sq ft, which is less than a Sukoon.

What each home type actually costs

Hardware first, since it is the number that decides the rest. Machine counts assume the bedroom doors are shut for at least part of the day, which is what makes each bedroom a separate purchase. Areas are rough and vary hugely by city.

Working out your own monthly figure in three lines

Start with millilitres, not rupees. A drop from a dropper bottle is roughly a twentieth of a millilitre — twenty drops to the millilitre is the usual figure — so the recommended three to six drops a tank is somewhere between 0.15ml and 0.3ml. Call it 0.2ml a fill at four drops, which is where most people settle once the novelty wears off. One fill a day is 6ml a month. Two fills a day at six drops is 18ml a month. Those two figures bracket almost every household in India, and everything else follows from them.

Then convert. The Hotel Collection costs about ₹6 a millilitre in a 300ml bottle at ₹1,799, about ₹10 in a 100ml at ₹999, and about ₹20 in a 15ml at ₹299. So one machine run modestly is about ₹36 a month on a 300ml, ₹60 on a 100ml, ₹120 on 15ml bottles. Run hard — two fills a day, six drops — it is about ₹108 a month on a 300ml. Multiply by your machine count and you have the whole recurring bill: three machines run modestly is about ₹108 a month, three machines run hard is about ₹324.

Then check it against how long a bottle lasts, because that is the sanity test people actually feel. At 6ml a month, a 300ml bottle is the better part of four years for one machine, or about seventeen months across three. A 100ml at ₹999 is roughly sixteen months on one machine. A 15ml is around two and a half — which is exactly right for testing a scent and exactly wrong as a standing order. In practice you will change fragrance before you finish a 300ml, and that is fine; it means the constraint on this hobby is your taste, not your budget.
