Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated September 2026
A difficult professional period is not one situation, and the reason most gift guides are useless here is that they treat it as one. Four versions turn up again and again, and they want different things from you. The setback everybody knows about, the one nobody knows about, the one where income has stopped and any parcel reads as money, and the one where the person is still walking into the same building every morning. Work out which you are dealing with and the answer is short. There is no career advice anywhere on this page, and nothing here changes how any of it went.
SOSA Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani alcohol-free attars, 3ml from Rs 379
SOSA attars · alcohol-free, 3ml from ₹379 ₹379 →
The quietest thing in the range, which is what this page keeps arriving at. SOSA attars, 3ml from ₹379 - alcohol-free oil, rolled on rather than sprayed, small enough to be received without any ceremony. Pictured as a set of three; the boxed Attar Trio is ₹1,055, and on this page a single bottle sent to a home address is almost always the better call.
Quick answers — read this first
What do you give someone going through a hard time at work? It depends which hard time. If it is public, send something small and private - a 3ml attar from ₹379. If it is private, send nothing that could get commented on. If money has stopped, send something clearly consumable like a candle at ₹399. If they are still in the job, buy for home, not for the desk.

Should I send something to their office? Almost never. A parcel sent to an office is public by definition, and in a difficult professional period the person rarely wants a reason for colleagues to ask a question. Home is the right address in three of the four situations, and in the fourth - where they are still in the building - it is the only sensible one.

How much should I spend? ₹379 to ₹1,000, and lower rather than higher where money is tight. A large parcel arriving during a professional setback can read as a comment on how badly you think things are going, and if income has stopped it can read as charity, which is a difficult thing to hand somebody.
The short answer
Short answer: Sort by situation. Public setback: something small and private, a 3ml attar at Rs 379. Private setback: nothing that invites questions. Money tight: something consumable at Rs 399 that is obviously not charity. Still in the same job: buy for home, never the desk. Keep everything between Rs 379 and Rs 1,000.
The pick: A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 or a candle at ₹399 - and a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 only where you know the home well.
Why: All three are small, consumable and sent to a home address rather than an office, which is what every one of the four situations has in common.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What is a thoughtful gift for someone going through a difficult professional period?
Start with which of the four you are looking at. If the setback is public - a redundancy round, a team dissolved, something announced - send something small, private and to their home: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399. If it is private, and they told you and almost nobody else, the gift must not create a conversation; a candle at ₹399, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, is about as quiet as an object gets. If money has stopped, send something visibly consumable rather than valuable, and go to the bottom of the range rather than the top, because a large parcel in that situation can land as charity. If they are still in the building, doing the same job under worse conditions, buy for the home they come back to - a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749, running about 6 to 10 weeks - and never for the desk. Send nothing at all if you are not sure they have told you on purpose. No object changes any of this, this page gives no career advice, and a parcel sits alongside ringing and turning up rather than instead of either; where something is more than a hard stretch the person who helps may need to be a professional. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The question is never what do you send someone whose work is going badly. It is who else knows, and what does this parcel say in front of them.
The cross-situation answer: something small, consumable and sent to their home. A candle at ₹399 or a 3ml attar at ₹379 covers three of the four.
SOSA attars from ₹379

Three things that are true across all four situations

The four situations are laid out in the table further down, because that is the sort by which actually helps. First, though, there are three things that hold across all of them and settle most of the decision before you have looked at a single product.

1
The first constant
Who else knows, and what the parcel says in front of them
Professional difficulty is unusual among hard times in that it has an audience. Colleagues, a team, sometimes an entire industry's worth of people on a feed. That changes the object, because a gift is a small public statement wherever it arrives, and the person may be working quite hard to control what is public.

So the rule is simple and it applies to all four cases: send to the home, never to the office. A parcel that lands on a desk hands colleagues a question to ask. And keep it small, because a large parcel is a louder statement about how bad you have decided things are - which is uncomfortable in front of an audience and uncomfortable in private. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar makes the point without narrating anything.
Tip: Home address, small parcel, no explanation needed for anybody who happens to see it.
2
The second constant
Buy for the hours outside the job, not for the job
Desk gifts fail here for the obvious reason: the desk is the problem, or is at least where the problem happens. An object that improves the site of the difficulty is a reminder of it, and in the situation where somebody has left or been let go, a desk gift is worse than useless - it points at something that is no longer there.

What people in a difficult professional stretch have less of is the ordinary hours at the other end of the day. That is where the room they walk into matters, and it is the honest case for a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849, which runs about 6 to 10 weeks and works without being switched on, or a candle at ₹399 lit at a chosen moment. Note the limit, though: a candle is a scent and an object to light. It is not a break, and nothing on this page does anything to a working week.
3
The third constant
Say nothing about the work itself
This is where well-meant messages go wrong, and it is worth more attention than the product choice. Do not evaluate the job they lost, do not tell them what to do next, do not offer to look over anything unless they ask, and do not tell them this will turn out to have been for the best - nobody knows that, and the person who did not get the thing wanted the thing. There is no career advice on this page for the same reason.

What works is short and specific and about them rather than about their CV. Thinking of you this week. Free Sunday if you want to be somewhere that is not your flat. That is the whole message. SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, so whatever you write goes separately in your own words - and if you are choosing between the larger gift and making the call, make the call.
Tip: No predictions, no advice, no verdicts on the job. Name the week and offer a Sunday.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to work out which of the four you are in
  1. Ask who else knows. Public, private, or only you? That sets the size.
  2. Ask whether income has stopped. If yes, stay near Rs 379 to Rs 499.
  3. Ask whether they are still in the job. If yes, buy for home, not the desk.
  4. Send to their home address and write your own sentence separately.
The SOSA principle
A professional setback is the one kind of hard time that comes with an audience, so the gift has to be quiet as well as small. Everything else on this page follows from that single fact.
Which is why the smallest thing in the range is usually the most appropriate one here, and never the other way around.

The shortlist, and which situation each one suits

Against those four situations the range sorts quickly. The 3ml attars at ₹379 to ₹399 are the quietest thing SOSA makes and the best answer to a public setback - alcohol-free oil in a small bottle, rolled on rather than sprayed, nothing anybody else would see. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose with sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud with Mysore sandalwood; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose. The candles at ₹399 - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings, Evening Walks - burn about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours, and are the right register where money is tight because they are obviously used up rather than kept. The 50ml reed diffusers at ₹749 to ₹849 last about 6 to 10 weeks and suit the person still in the job, because they work on the hours at the other end of the day. Note what is not on this list: the Attar Trio at ₹1,055, the Woodenwick candles at ₹999 and the reed duo sets from ₹1,498 are real gifts for other occasions, and here they are usually a size too loud. Wax melts at ₹499 need a ₹599 ceramic burner and are a component rather than a gift on their own, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine somebody has to already own.

The SOSA gift edit
The four situations, and the move for each
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
The public setback · a 3ml attar, ₹379 to ₹399 A redundancy round, a team dissolved, a departure people have commented on. The person is managing an audience as well as the situation, so the gift should be small, private and sent to their home - never the office. A 3ml attar is about as quiet as an object gets. Say nothing about the job in the message and make no prediction about what happens next; they wanted the thing they lost. Where it fails: anything large or ceremonial, which turns a private day into an event.
The private setback · a candle, ₹399 Passed over, a project taken away, a review that went badly - told to you and almost nobody else. Here the gift must not create a conversation, with them or with anybody in their house. A ₹399 candle at about 15 to 18 hours is the quietest useful object on the list and needs no explaining. Where it fails: if you are not certain they meant to tell you, send nothing and simply be someone who is easy to talk to.
Money has stopped · ₹379 to ₹499, consumable Income has paused and the parcel risks reading as charity. Go low in the range rather than high, and choose something visibly used up - a candle at ₹399, an attar at ₹379 - rather than anything that looks like an asset. The useful gestures here are usually practical and unpurchased: food, a lift, an hour of admin taken off them. Where it fails: a large parcel, which is the one thing that makes the money visible rather than beside the point.
Still in the building · a 50ml reed diffuser, ₹749 to ₹849 The same job, worse conditions, and they are walking back in tomorrow. Buy for the home they come back to rather than the desk they sit at - about 6 to 10 weeks from a shelf with no flame and no socket. It does nothing about the job and this page offers no advice about the job. Where it fails: a rented room or shared flat where a candle is not permitted is fine for a reed, but ₹749 can be more than a work friendship usually carries unannounced.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

One more time on size, because this is where the argument for going smaller bites hardest. Go smaller than you first reached for. The 3ml attar rather than the 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 or the 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. A single candle at ₹399 rather than the ₹699 duo. The 50ml reed rather than the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349. In a professional setback the size of a parcel is read as an estimate of how serious the damage is, and an estimate is not something you want to be handing anybody about their own career. Keep the object small, keep the address private, and put the effort into the sentence you send separately - SOSA encloses no printed card, so that sentence was always going to be yours.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

Work trouble is the only kind of hard time that arrives with spectators. That is why the right gift here is quiet, small, sent to a home address, and says nothing whatsoever about the job.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by how small it can be while still being specific - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA scented candles Hand-poured, small batches Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours from ₹399
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055
SOSA wax melts Flameless, needs a burner Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too from ₹499
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
  • Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
  • Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
  • Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
  • Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.
  • Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long any fragrance will be liked, delivery or dispatch timing, any festive discount, any minimum order quantity or bulk rate, and any claim about what a person will feel on receiving a gift. Those questions go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

What do you send someone who has just lost their job?
Something small, consumable and sent to their home: a candle at Rs 399 or a 3ml attar at Rs 379. Keep the message free of predictions and advice - they wanted the job they lost. If money has stopped, stay at the bottom of the range, because a large parcel in that situation can read as charity rather than as attention.
Is it a bad idea to send a gift to someone's office?
Usually, yes. A parcel sent to an office is public and hands colleagues a reason to ask a question the person may not want to answer. In a difficult professional period the home address is the right one in almost every case, and it is the only sensible one if they are still working in the same building.
What should I avoid saying?
Anything that evaluates the job, predicts what happens next, or tells them what to do. No advice about their career, no reassurance that this will turn out to have been a good thing, no comments on the employer. Name the week, say you are thinking of them, and offer something specific like a free Sunday.
Is a Rs 399 candle too cheap for a colleague or a close friend?
No. Between Rs 379 and Rs 1,000 covers this properly for both. A larger parcel does not communicate more - it communicates a judgement about how bad things are, which the person then has to respond to. If you want it to feel more considered, put that into what you write rather than into the price.
Can SOSA recommend one thing for my specific situation?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and say which of the four it is - public, private, money tight, or still in the job - plus whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend. You will get one recommendation, including the times the honest answer is to send nothing and ring instead.

No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
