Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
Somebody you care about is in the middle of something you cannot fix - a loss, an illness, a stretch that has no end date yet - and you want to send something without making it worse. That is the real constraint here, and it is not a budget problem. A gift cannot carry this, and it should not be asked to. What a small parcel can honestly do is tell a person you are thinking about them, which is worth saying, and it belongs alongside ringing, visiting and being reachable rather than in place of any of it.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, from Rs 749
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon and mint reed diffuser from ₹749 →
Chosen here for being quiet rather than for being impressive. Morning Freshness, ₹749 for 50ml - Malabar lemon and mint, passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in and nothing to switch off. It asks nothing of the person receiving it, which is the whole requirement at a moment like this. A 3ml attar at ₹379 is the even smaller version, and smaller is usually right.
Quick answers — read this first
What do you send someone going through a difficult time? Something small and quiet. A 3ml attar from ₹379, or a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 that sits in a room for about 6 to 10 weeks and needs nothing switched on. Keep it under about ₹1,000, and send it alongside a message and a phone call rather than as a replacement for either.

Is a gift appropriate at a time like this? A small one usually is, because it asks nothing of the person receiving it. A large one can become an obligation at exactly the wrong moment. Nothing on this page is advice about what somebody is going through, and no fragrance is a treatment for anything - it is a scent, and that is all it is.

What should I avoid saying? Anything that promises an effect. Do not tell somebody that a scent will change how their week goes, do not offer a diagnosis of what they are dealing with, and do not frame the parcel as help. Name the situation plainly, say you are thinking of them, and make it clear you are around.
The short answer
Short answer: Send something small: a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, or a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 that runs about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to switch on. Keep it under Rs 1,000. A gift like this sits alongside ringing and turning up, never instead of them, and nothing here is advice about what the person is going through.
The pick: A Morning Freshness reed diffuser at ₹749 in 50ml - Malabar lemon and mint, passive, and the least declarative of the five SOSA reeds.
Why: It sits quietly in a room, needs nothing from the person, and makes no claim about anything.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
What is a good thinking-of-you gift for somebody going through a difficult time?
Something small and undemanding, sent with a plain message and followed by a phone call. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 is the one I would send most often: passive home fragrance that runs about 6 to 10 weeks, with nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off and nothing to remember. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 is the smaller version and is often the better one here, because the smallest thing is the easiest thing to receive. What matters more than the choice is the framing. A fragrance is a scent. It is not treatment, it will not change what is happening, and nothing on this page is advice about what the person is going through. A gift is a gesture of attention, not care delivered. Where the difficulty is serious, it sits alongside you turning up, ringing and staying reachable, and never in place of any of that. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The honest version of this is short. A small parcel says: I am thinking about you. It does not say anything else, and it should not be made to.
If you want the plain answer: a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749. The smallest option is usually the right one here.
SOSA attars from ₹379

What a small parcel can and cannot do

There is not much to decide here, and the decisions that matter are about scale and framing rather than about scent. These three are the ones worth thinking about before you buy anything.

1
The first variable
What the parcel is actually for
It is worth being exact, because the exactness is what keeps the gesture honest. A small parcel tells somebody that you were thinking about them on a day when no occasion made you. That is the entire content of it. It does not shorten an illness, it does not touch a loss, and it does not do anything to how a person gets through a week. Any page that suggests otherwise is selling you a feeling rather than an object.

This matters practically as well as morally. If you buy believing the thing will help, you will over-buy, and an over-large gift at a moment like this becomes something the person has to manage: acknowledged properly, thanked for, found a place for. A gift is a gesture of attention, not care delivered. Keep that sentence in mind and the size question answers itself.
Tip: Write the message first. If the object is doing work the message should do, buy a smaller object.
2
The second variable
Alongside, never instead
Where somebody is dealing with grief, illness, a loss or a stretch with no visible end, the thing they need is people. Posting something is not people. It is a reasonable way to say a short sentence across a distance, and it is worth doing, but it goes alongside ringing, visiting, sitting there, taking something off their list and being reachable at odd hours - never instead of any of it. If you find yourself sending a parcel because it is easier than making the call, make the call.

Two things this page will not do. It will not tell you what the person is going through or what they should do about it, because that is not a gifting page's business and it would not be worth much if it were. And it will not attach any claim to a fragrance beyond what a fragrance is: Evening Calm, for instance, is the name of a lavender and chamomile blend, and a name on a bottle is not an effect on a person.
3
The third variable
Why the smallest option is usually the right one
Everywhere else in gifting, going smaller is a matter of taste. Here it is a matter of not adding to somebody's load. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 or a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 can be received with a one-line reply and put on a shelf. A duo set at ₹1,498, or a machine, or anything that needs unpacking, setting up, plugging in or learning, arrives as a small project at a moment when projects are the last thing wanted.

That rules out more than you might expect, and deliberately: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 and the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 are real products and completely wrong for this, as is anything that arrives as an event. If you want to spend more, spend it on going to see them.
Tip: If it needs assembling, a socket or an explanation, it is the wrong gift for this moment.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
What to do, in this order
  1. Send the message or make the call first. The parcel is never the opening move.
  2. Choose the smallest sensible thing: a 3ml attar at Rs 379 or a 50ml reed at Rs 749.
  3. Rule out anything that needs plugging in, setting up or learning.
  4. Say plainly that you are around, and then actually be around.
The SOSA principle
Sending something small tells a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you. That is all it does, and it is enough to be worth doing as long as nobody pretends it is more.
It is not help, it is not treatment, and it is not a stand-in for being there.

Which SOSA product, and why the smallest one is usually right

Pick something quiet rather than something interesting. Morning Freshness at ₹749, Malabar lemon and mint, is the least declarative of the five SOSA reeds and the safest thing to send into a home you cannot picture. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night jasmine if you know florals are welcome. Evening Calm at ₹799 is a lavender and chamomile blend - a name on a bottle, nothing more than that. For something worn, Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac and is the easiest of the four attars to get right. Leave Fresh Brew at ₹849, coffee and vanilla, and the heavier oud and saffron compositions for people whose taste you know well, because a strong scent that somebody did not ask for is one more thing to deal with.

The SOSA gift edit
What to send, and what to leave alone
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 The smallest real gift there is, and often the right one here. Alcohol-free oil, rolled on rather than sprayed, nothing to set up. Leave it alone if you cannot name a fragrance they already wear, because a worn scent is a taste decision and this is not the week to make one on somebody's behalf.
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 Passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in or switch off, and it asks nothing of the person at all. The steadiest choice on this page for somebody at home. Leave the 130ml at ₹1,249 upwards alone unless the room is genuinely large.
Car fragrance · ₹449 to ₹549 Mild hanging or stronger spray at the same price. Sensible only for somebody still doing a daily drive, and it is a light, practical thing rather than a significant one. Leave it alone if their routine has been disrupted by whatever is happening, which is often the case.
Anything with a plug or a box · ₹1,498 and up Duo gift sets at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598, the ultrasonic machines, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999, the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. All real products, all wrong for this. They arrive as an event and a small project, and neither is what you want to hand somebody right now.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

If you take one thing from this page, take the size rule: send the smaller one. A 3ml attar at ₹379 or a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 can be accepted with three words and no ceremony, and that is what makes it a kindness rather than a task. There are also straightforward reasons not to buy at all. If you can be there this week, go, and take nothing. If you have not spoken to them yet, speak first, because a parcel is a bad way to open a conversation. If you are not close enough that a gift from you would make obvious sense, a message on its own is the better call. And if you are sending something because it is easier than ringing, that is the clearest signal of all to put the basket down and ring.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

One message, one honest recommendation
Tell SOSA who you are surprising, whether they drive, whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend - and you will be told which one to send, including when the cheaper one is the better gift.

Send the small thing and then pick up the phone. The parcel is the sentence you can post; the call is the one that actually reaches somebody.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

What is an appropriate gift for someone going through a difficult time?
Something small and undemanding. A 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, or a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 that runs about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to plug in. Under Rs 1,000 is the sensible ceiling, and the smallest option is usually the right one.
Will a fragrance help them?
No, and no page should tell you it will. A fragrance is a scent. It is not a treatment and it does not change what somebody is going through. What a small parcel does is say that you were thinking about them, which is a real thing to say and the only thing it says.
Is sending a gift enough on its own?
No. Where the difficulty is serious, a gift belongs alongside ringing, visiting and being reachable, never instead of any of it. If posting something feels easier than making the call, that is a good reason to make the call first and send the parcel afterwards, or not at all.
What should I write?
Name the situation plainly rather than talking around it, say you are thinking of them, and say you are around. Do not ask them to reply, do not offer advice about what they should do, and do not make any claim about what the thing in the box will do for them.
When should I not send anything?
If you can be there in person this week, go and take nothing. If you have not spoken to them yet, speak first. If you are not close enough that a parcel from you would make obvious sense, a message on its own is better. And if the gift is standing in for a conversation you are avoiding, have the conversation.

Take the next step
Send something small, then ring them
A 3ml attar from ₹379 or a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 covers almost every version of this, and the smaller one is usually the better one. Nothing here needs a socket, an app or any setting up. If you would rather talk it through first, message SOSA on WhatsApp and you will get one suggestion - including the times the honest answer is to send nothing and go and see them.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
