This is the whole thing in one page: how to make an air-conditioned home smell consistently good, in the order the steps have to happen. Two of the five steps cost nothing and are not optional. The other three are what the machine is for. If you read one page in this block, read this one.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I scent an air-conditioned home properly? In five steps, in order. Air it: about twenty minutes of cross-ventilation daily with windows on two opposite sides, fans on and exhausts running, done before you cool. Service it: wash the indoor unit filters every two to four weeks and have the coil, blower wheel and drain pan professionally cleaned once a year. Size it: one machine per 1000m³ of connected air, which is what a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Place it on the return-air path, two metres from the indoor unit and out of the direct throw, never underneath it. Set it low on scheduled windows, and choose a structured rather than sweet fragrance, because cold air flattens sweetness.
What are the SOSA Vaayu specifications and price? The SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000 cubic metres, described by the manufacturer as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. It takes pure fragrance oil in a 400ml refillable tank lasting up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours. Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, DC 12V at 1A drawing 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock, CE, RoHS and SGS certified, made in India.
What does a Vaayu cost to run in an air-conditioned home for a year? Two things: fragrance and electricity. The 400ml tank of pure fragrance oil lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, so a typical home is looking at roughly five fills a year, and fewer days per fill at higher intensity or longer hours. Electricity is negligible, since the machine draws 5W, which is around 1.5 units a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. There is no water in the system, so there is nothing to descale, no filter to replace and no standing water to go stale in a cold room.
The short answer
Short answer: in five steps, in order. Air the house for about twenty minutes a day before you cool. Service the AC - filters every two to four weeks, coil, blower and drain pan once a year. Size at one machine per 1000m³ of connected air, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Place it on the return-air path, two metres from the indoor unit and out of the throw, never underneath it. Then set it low on scheduled windows and choose a structured rather than sweet fragrance, because cold air flattens sweetness and shortens the opening.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per 1000m³ of connected air - waterless, under 38dB, 5W, 400ml tank up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted.
Next step: send us your floor plan with ceiling heights, tell us where the indoor units are and when the coil was last serviced, and we will write the plan for you - ask us what fits your home.
Steps one and two cost nothing and are not optional. Steps three to five are what a machine is actually for. Do them in this order and a cooled house holds a consistent character all day; do them in the other order and you have paid for a fragrance sitting on top of stale air.
What is the complete plan for scenting an air-conditioned home?
Five steps, and the order is the whole point. Step one, air it. A split AC recirculates room air and brings in no fresh air at all, so open the house on two opposite sides for about twenty minutes a day with the fans on and the kitchen and bathroom exhausts running, early morning or late evening in summer, and do it before you start cooling. Step two, service it. Wash the indoor unit mesh filters every two to four weeks and refit them completely dry, have the coil, blower wheel and drain pan professionally cleaned once a year and ask for that job by name, check the drain line runs freely, and run fan or dry mode for ten minutes before switching off so the coil dries. If the house smells sourest in the first two minutes after switch-on, that is the unit and not the house. Step three, size it. Multiply length by width by height for each connected space and divide by 1000m³, which is what one SOSA Vaayu covers, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Most flats are one machine. Measure the height, because a double-height room holds far more air than its floor area suggests. Step four, place it. On the return-air path, about two metres from the indoor unit, out of the direct throw of the louvres, with a foot of clear air around it. Never directly under the unit, never head-on into the cold stream, never in a corner or behind a curtain. Wall mount above eye level in a small or busy room, and HVAC mount to the ductwork where the house is ducted. Step five, set it and choose. Low intensity on two scheduled windows a day rather than high all day, 30 to 45 minutes before guests arrive, and if the room reads flat lengthen the run before you raise the intensity. On fragrance, cold air flattens sweetness and shortens the opening, so choose structure: tea, cedar, vetiver, fig, soft citrus, clean musk. A scent machine does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Nothing about diffusing a fragrance breaks down, neutralises, captures or cancels what is already in the air, and any brand telling you otherwise is overselling a fragrance product. Run a diffuser in a house that has had no fresh air for a fortnight and a coil that has not been cleaned in two years, and you get both at once, which is genuinely worse than either alone. One line worth being plain about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind. A free home scenting plan will do all five with you, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Air it daily. Service the AC. Size at 1000m³ per machine. Place it on the return path, not under the unit. Run it low and scheduled, with a structured rather than sweet fragrance.
The machine this guide is built around: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. Waterless, 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock, freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted.
One machine runs this entire guide. The reason it is one machine rather than several is that in a cooled home the recirculating air distributes for you, so a single correctly placed unit covers a connected floor.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser at ₹11,999. 1000m³ coverage, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml refillable tank of pure fragrance oil lasting up to about 75 days. Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
Freestanding on the return side, wall mounted above eye level in a small or busy room, or HVAC mounted to ductwork where the house is ducted. 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, so none of the three is a project.
Two short low windows a day rather than full intensity all day, and 30 to 45 minutes before guests arrive. If the room reads flat, lengthen the run before you raise the intensity, because you adapt to a scent within a minute or two and your guests do not.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Waterless, so no moisture added to a room you are keeping cool and dry, and no standing water in a tank. Made in India.
The five steps, grouped into three sections: the two free ones that come first, the sizing and placement decisions, and the settings and fragrance choice that finish it.
1
Steps one and two
Air it daily, service it properly - and neither is optional
A split air conditioner cools the air you already have and never replaces it, so a house shut and cooled all day exchanges almost nothing and everything it emits accumulates. Twenty minutes of cross-ventilation a day, on two opposite sides, with fans running and the kitchen and bathroom exhausts on, is the single most valuable thing on this page and it is free. Do it before you cool, so what the AC works on is fresh air. Then the unit itself, which is very often the actual source: the evaporator coil is cold and wet by design, it sits over a drain pan that stays damp, and dust that gets past the filter turns into biofilm on the coil and blower over a season, which is the sour dirty-sock note in the first minutes after switch-on. Wash the mesh filters every two to four weeks and refit them dry, have the coil, blower and drain pan cleaned professionally once a year, check the drain line, and run fan or dry mode for ten minutes before switching off. No fragrance product touches any of this.
Tip: if the smell is worst in the first two minutes after switch-on, book the coil clean before you buy anything.
The Vaayu is step three onwards. It adds fragrance to clear air and removes nothing, which is exactly what it should be asked to do.
Size by air volume, then get it onto the return path
Sizing is arithmetic, not judgement. Multiply length by width by height for each connected volume, add up the spaces that are genuinely open to each other and on the same cooling, and divide by 1000 cubic metres, which is what one Vaayu covers at about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. Most Indian flats come out at one machine. Measure the height, because a double-height living room holds far more air than the floor plan implies. Then placement, which in a cooled room is worth more than the setting. The air is on a loop all day: the return path, where it travels back towards the indoor unit, is where a low continuous output gets picked up and distributed evenly around the whole volume. Two metres from the unit, out of the direct throw of the louvres, a foot of clear air around it. Never underneath the indoor unit, where condensate drips and the air is coldest. Never head-on into the cold stream, which scatters the plume against the far wall. Never in a corner or behind a curtain, which is dead air. Hold a tissue up while the unit runs if you are not sure.
Freestanding, wall mounted above eye level or HVAC mounted - three ways to get the Vaayu onto the air path.
Cold air slows evaporation, so a fragrance reads lighter and shorter with the AC on, and almost everybody responds by turning the intensity up. Do not. You adapt to a scent within a minute or two of being in the room while everyone arriving from outside does not, so over-scenting is a worse result rather than a stronger one, and heavy fragrance in a cold sealed room turns cloying by the second hour. Set a morning window and an early-evening window at a low or medium intensity, and if the room reads flat, lengthen the run before you touch the dial. Before guests, start it 30 to 45 minutes ahead so it has settled. On the fragrance itself, cold air flattens sweetness and shortens the opening, so choose compositions with structure: white and green tea, cedar, vetiver and light woods, fig, soft citrus, clean musk, dry mineral notes. Avoid vanilla, caramel, cocoa and heavy amber, which settle rather than lift in a cold room. And use one fragrance across the connected floor, because recirculating air will not keep three scents in three rooms.
Tip: if it reads flat, lengthen the run before you raise the intensity - every time.
1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity on the Vaayu are what make low-and-long the easy option.
The whole guide as a table. Steps one and two are free. Steps three to five are what the machine is for.
The SOSA plan
The five steps, in order
What you are actually dealing with
What fixes it
Step 1 - air it
About twenty minutes of cross-ventilation daily, windows on two opposite sides, fans on, kitchen and bathroom exhausts running. Do it before you cool, not during. A split AC never brings in fresh air.
Step 2 - service it
Mesh filters washed every two to four weeks and refitted dry. Coil, blower wheel and drain pan professionally cleaned yearly. Drain line checked. Fan or dry mode for ten minutes before switch-off.
Steps 3 and 4 - size and place
One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per 1000m³ of connected air, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, placed on the return-air path two metres from the indoor unit and out of the throw. Wall or HVAC mount where that is easier. View →
Step 5 - set and choose
Low intensity on two scheduled windows a day, 30 to 45 minutes before guests. Structured rather than sweet: tea, cedar, vetiver, fig, soft citrus, clean musk. One fragrance across the connected floor. View →
Three pages go deeper than this one where you need it. Why your air-conditioned house smells stale is the diagnosis, including the coil and drain pan in detail. Where to place a scent machine in an air-conditioned room turns step four into specific distances and mounting options. And the best fragrance system for a fully air-conditioned villa handles sizing when the house is large or fully ducted. The broader question is answered in why your house doesn't smell fresh even after cleaning. On fragrance choice, in full: On the fragrance itself, a cold house is a specific brief. Cold air flattens a composition and shortens its opening, so the profiles that survive are the ones with structure rather than sparkle: white tea and green tea, cedar, vetiver and light woods, fig, soft citrus, clean musks, a dry mineral note. Those read as air, space and order, which is precisely what a recirculating house is short of. What fails is anything sweet and gourmand - vanilla, caramel, cocoa, heavy amber. In a cold, closed room sweetness does not lift, it settles, and it goes cloying by the second hour. Big ouds and very heavy florals are beautiful compositions in the wrong volume of air. And use one fragrance across the connected floor rather than a different one in every room, because in a house where the air is constantly recirculating, three scents do not stay in three rooms.
Steps one and two come first: Air the house daily and service the coil, drain and filters. The Vaayu adds fragrance to clear air and does not remove odour. ₹11,999.
A house that smells expensive is not carrying an expensive fragrance. It is carrying a quiet one, at the same level, every day, over air that somebody bothered to replace.

The specification behind the guide
Waterless, quiet, cheap to run and mountable three ways
The SOSA specification for an air-conditioned home
One machine runs this whole guide. It is waterless, which matters in a house you are cooling and drying; it covers a connected floor rather than a room; it is quiet enough to forget and cheap enough to leave running; and it mounts three ways, so it can go where the air is rather than where the surface is. A note from Sonal
I wrote this one as the page I would hand somebody who asked me the whole question at a dinner. Not what should I buy, but how do I make a cooled house smell the way a good hotel does. The answer has five steps and two of them are free, and the free two are the ones that get skipped because they are boring and nobody sells them.
The rest is a short technical conversation. Cubic metres rather than rooms, because that is what a machine is rated in. The return-air path rather than a console under the indoor unit, because in a cooled house the air is doing the distributing and you want to be on the right side of the loop. And a low setting on a schedule rather than a high one all day, because cold air flattens a fragrance and the natural response to that is precisely the wrong one. One Vaayu, placed properly, run quietly, is what I would have in my own home.
And the part that goes on every page I write. A cool house that smells wonderful has been aired and serviced first and scented second, in that order, always. Frequently asked questions
How do I scent an air-conditioned home properly?
In five steps, in order. Air it: about twenty minutes of cross-ventilation daily with windows on two opposite sides, fans on and exhausts running, done before you cool. Service it: wash the indoor unit filters every two to four weeks and have the coil, blower wheel and drain pan cleaned professionally once a year. Size it: one machine per 1000 cubic metres of connected air, which is what a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. Place it on the return-air path, two metres from the indoor unit and out of the throw, never underneath it. Set it low on two scheduled windows a day and choose a structured rather than sweet fragrance.
What does it cost to run for a year?
Two things: fragrance and electricity. The 400ml tank lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, so a typical home is looking at roughly five fills a year, and fewer days per fill at higher intensity or longer hours. Electricity is negligible, since the machine draws 5W, which is around 1.5 units a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. There is no water in the system, so there is nothing to descale and no standing water to go stale in a cold room.
What settings should I use in a cold room?
Run it low and often rather than high and occasionally. In a cold room a fragrance reads lighter, so the temptation is to raise the intensity, which only means everyone arriving from outside meets far more scent than you can smell yourself. Set a low or medium intensity on scheduled windows using the app - a morning window and an early-evening one suits most homes - and give it 30 to 45 minutes before guests arrive so it has settled rather than just been switched on. The SOSA Vaayu takes 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers with adjustable intensity.
Will the machine make a stale house smell fresh?
No. A scent machine adds fragrance, it does not remove odour. Diffusing a fragrance does not break down, neutralise or capture the molecules already in the air, so scenting a house with no air exchange and a dirty evaporator coil gives you both smells at once, which is worse than either on its own. Ventilation, filter cleaning and a proper coil and drain service are what remove the smell. Fragrance is the finish on air that is already clear, and used that way it is genuinely worth having.
Set it once and leave it: Bluetooth app, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and key-lock, CE, RoHS and SGS certified. ₹11,999.

Facts verified 24 August 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with a 400ml refillable tank lasting up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, operation under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W, dimensions 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification. It uses no water and no heat, so it adds no moisture to an air-conditioned room, holds no standing water and leaves no residue. It is a fragrance machine and not an air purifier: it adds fragrance and does not remove odour. Scent enhances the ambience and perceived quality of a space; it works alongside proper ventilation and cleaning and is not a substitute for either, and SOSA makes no claim that fragrance alone influences a purchase decision.
