This is the one question in the family with a one-word answer, so I will give it and then spend the rest of the guide on the part that actually helps: how to work out which of your ceiling grilles is which, because almost nobody can tell by looking and the two do exactly opposite things.
Quick answers — read this first
Near the AC return or away from it?Away, and it is not a close call. A return grille is an opening that removes air from the room so the system can cool it and send it round again. Anything released within a couple of metres of one is drawn out of the showroom before the floor has had any benefit from it. A supply grille does the opposite - it pushes conditioned air into the room, and whatever you put in that stream travels with it. Same ceiling, opposite jobs, near-identical appearance.
How do I tell them apart? With a tissue and twenty minutes. Run the system for twenty minutes so it is properly warm, then hold a light tissue up to each ceiling grille in turn. If the tissue lifts away from the grille, air is entering the room and that is a supply. If it is pulled flat against the grille, air is leaving and that is a return. Mark both on the floor plan in different colours. Do it once and you own the map for as long as you are in the building.
Where exactly does the machine go, then? Two or three metres downstream of a supply grille, roughly a metre off the floor, inside the stream of air it makes but not in the direct blast - and as far along the path towards the return as the display floor sensibly allows. That distance is the room's air life, and you want to enter it at the start. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³; under about 750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899.
The short answer
Short answer: away from the return, decisively. A return grille removes air from the room, so a machine beside one feeds the plant rather than the showroom. Place it two or three metres downstream of a supply grille instead, roughly a metre off the floor. Tell the two apart with a tissue: lifting away is a supply, pulled flat is a return.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), freestanding and placed at the supply end of the air's path across the display floor; under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) placed by the same rule.
Next step: send the floor plan with every ceiling grille marked as supply or return after the tissue walk, and we will suggest the two positions worth trying first - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
From six feet below, the two grille types are indistinguishable. Twenty minutes with a tissue turns an invisible system into a marked-up floor plan you will use for as long as you hold the lease.

Should a scent machine go near the air-conditioning return or away from it?
Away from it, decisively, and there is no version of this question where the answer is otherwise. Here is why, and then the useful part. A central system has two openings in every room it serves. A supply grille pushes conditioned air into the room; a return grille pulls room air back out so the plant can cool it and send it round again. Whatever you place in front of a supply is distributed across the floor by air that was going there anyway. Whatever you place near a return is removed from the building before anyone standing on the display floor has had a single molecule of it. Same ceiling, near-identical appearance from six feet below, exactly opposite consequences - which is why the mistake is not a careless one but an invisible one. Now the part that helps. Take a light tissue and walk the showroom with the system running twenty minutes, so it is warm rather than starting cold. Hold the tissue up to each ceiling grille in turn. Where it lifts away and flutters, air is entering the room: that is a supply. Where it is drawn flat against the grille and stays there, air is leaving: that is a return. Mark both on your floor plan in two colours. Most showrooms have several supplies and only one or two returns, which is good news - it means there are only a couple of positions you actually have to avoid, and everywhere else is negotiable. Returns also hide: high on a wall in an older building, above the reception desk, in a ceiling void serving as a plenum, or as an undercut door into a back corridor. Then the placement rule, stated as a principle rather than a recipe. The distance between a supply and a return is the entire life of that air inside your room, and you want to join it at the beginning. So: two or three metres downstream of a supply grille, roughly a metre off the floor, inside the stream but not in the direct blast, and as far along the path towards the return as the display floor sensibly allows. Not at the entrance, where a glass door keeps exchanging the air. Not inside a display kitchen, where it becomes a prop in a cabinet the air never reaches. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ and is freestanding, so you can try two positions in a week and keep the better one. Under about 750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest buy and a Vaayu would be the wrong one. Three limits I will not step over. Do not block, cover or move a return grille to solve this - the system needs it and altering it is not your call. A ducted install changes the whole geometry and belongs to your HVAC contractor along with pressure, intake and filtration. And none of this is a way to cover a smell. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the marked-up plan.
Away from the return, always. A supply distributes what you put in front of it and a return removes it, and they look the same from the floor. Tissue lifts away, supply; pulled flat, return. Machine two or three metres downstream of a supply, a metre up. ₹11,999 Vaayu, or ₹1,899 Sukoon under 750 sq ft.
One SOSA Vaayu - waterless, rated to 1000m³, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, under 38dB, with app timers and a key-lock. ₹11,999. Buy it freestanding first: a machine you can pick up is a machine you can test two positions with before committing to either one.
Freestanding is not a compromise in this question - it is the feature that lets you learn your own building. The images link to the product pages so you can check the specifications before ordering anything.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. Freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, so you can test a position for a fortnight before fixing anything to a wall.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. A small conditioned studio has the same supply-and-return geometry in a much smaller volume, and at this size a Vaayu is six times the price for a fraction of what it is rated to do.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA. Installation and mounting support are not published; confirm with SOSA.
Twenty minutes, a tissue and a printed floor plan. Do it once, properly, and you never have to guess about placement again.

Warm the system, then walk it
A cold start tells you nothing; a warm system tells you everything
Switch the air conditioning on and leave it for twenty minutes before you begin, because a system that has just started is still settling and the airflow at each grille is not yet representative. Then take a light tissue - a facial tissue is ideal, a strip of paper taped to a broom handle for high ceilings - and hold it up to each ceiling grille in turn, walking the whole showroom including reception, the consultation room and any corridor. Lifting away and fluttering is a supply. Drawn flat and held is a return. Mark them on the plan in two colours as you go, and write the date on it.
Tip: Include the back office. Its grilles tell you where the air is going after it leaves the floor.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Not every return is a neat square in the middle of the ceiling
In older buildings the return is often high on a wall rather than in the ceiling. In some fit-outs the ceiling void itself acts as a plenum, so the return is a grille you would not think twice about. Occasionally the return path is nothing more than an undercut door into a back corridor, which means the corridor doorway is quietly removing air from your display floor. And more than once I have found the return directly above the reception desk, which explains a great deal about why the entrance area behaves the way it does. You are looking for every place air leaves, not only the ones that look official.
Tip: If a doorway pulls the tissue, that doorway is part of the return path.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Enter the air path early and let the room have the whole of it
Think of the supply as the beginning of a journey and the return as the end of it, with your display floor as everything in between. A machine at the supply end gives the room the full length of that journey; a machine at the return end gives it a couple of seconds. So place two or three metres downstream of a supply, about a metre off the floor, inside the stream and out of the blast, and as far towards the supply end of the floor as the layout allows. What you must not do is block, cover or relocate a return grille to make this easier. The system needs it, and altering it is your contractor's decision rather than yours.
Ducted installs change this geometry entirely - that is an HVAC contractor's design.
Your showroom's air has a beginning and an end, and the fifteen or twenty metres between them is the only stretch where anybody is standing. A machine placed at the wrong end is not weak - it has simply arrived at the terminus.
Which is why the fix is a walk with a tissue rather than a conversation about intensity.
Freestanding on purpose: SOSA Vaayu can be repositioned in seconds, which is how you compare two supply-side positions without committing to either. ₹11,999.
A machine under a return grille is not underpowered. It is standing at the door marked exit, handing your fragrance to the plant room with great efficiency, all day, for years.
Two machines cover most conditioned kitchen showrooms, with the Aangan taking over where the building has genuine air handling and scale. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you plan a rollout. Installation, mounting support, warranty and AMC terms are not published - confirm them with SOSA. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification
Chosen by cubic volume, placed at the supply end of the air path
Map the grilles before you place anything, join the air path at the supply end, and never block or relocate a return to make the placement easier. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or display styling; it is never used to cover another smell - not laminate, not adhesive, not cooking - and ductwork, static pressure, fresh-air intake, grille alteration and filtration are your HVAC contractor's questions, not a fragrance supplier's. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall or order value. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
I like this question because it has a one-word answer and a genuinely useful hour behind it. The answer is away. The hour is the walk, and it is the single most valuable thing anybody in this cluster can do for their showroom without spending money.
What surprises people is how invisible the difference is. Two grilles, three metres apart, identical white louvres, and one of them is handing air to your display floor while the other is quietly taking it back. You cannot tell by looking and you cannot tell by standing underneath, but a tissue tells you in one second. Lifts away, supply. Pulled flat, return. I have watched showroom owners walk their own building for the first time and be genuinely surprised by where the returns turned out to be - above the reception desk, most memorably, which explained why the entrance had never behaved the way anybody expected.
Then the placement is almost obvious: enter the air's journey at the beginning rather than the end, a couple of metres downstream of a supply and about a metre off the floor. Buy the Vaayu at ₹11,999 freestanding so you can try two positions before fixing on one, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 if the floor is under about 750 sq ft, where a Vaayu would simply be the wrong buy. What belongs inside your ductwork is your HVAC contractor's trade and I will not pretend otherwise. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put a scent machine near the AC return or away from it?
Away from it, decisively. A return grille removes air from the room so the system can cool it and circulate it again, so a machine placed within a couple of metres of one has its output drawn out of the showroom before the display floor benefits. Place it two or three metres downstream of a supply grille instead, roughly a metre off the floor, inside the stream but not in the direct blast.
How do I tell a supply grille from a return grille?
Run the air conditioning for twenty minutes so the system is warm, then hold a light tissue up to each ceiling grille. If the tissue lifts away and flutters, air is entering the room and that is a supply. If it is drawn flat against the grille and held there, air is leaving and that is a return. Mark both on your floor plan in different colours and keep the plan.
Where do returns hide in a showroom?
High on a wall in older buildings, above or behind the reception desk, as an ordinary-looking grille where the ceiling void itself acts as a plenum, and sometimes as nothing more than an undercut door into a back corridor. You are looking for every place air leaves the room rather than only the openings that look official, so check wall grilles and doorways as well as ceilings.
Can I cover or move the return grille instead?
No. The system needs its return to work, and blocking, covering or relocating one is a decision for your HVAC contractor rather than for you or for a fragrance supplier. Move the machine, which takes ten seconds and costs nothing. If the geometry of your building genuinely leaves nowhere sensible to stand, that is a conversation to have with the engineer who commissioned the system.
Does this change if the machine is mounted in the ductwork?
Yes, completely, and at that point the decision is not mine. The SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is wall and HVAC mountable, but where a unit sits inside an air-handling system, along with duct penetration, static pressure, fresh-air intake and filtration, is your HVAC contractor's specification. Most single-floor showrooms never need a ducted install at all - a freestanding machine on the supply path does the same job.
Quiet enough for the floor: Under 38dB, so a display-floor position never intrudes on a ninety-minute consultation. ₹11,999.

The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers up to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and belongs two or three metres downstream of a supply grille rather than anywhere near a return; below about 750 sq ft the honest answer is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, and past roughly 5,000 sq ft the Aangan at ₹25,999. Ductwork and grille alteration remain your HVAC contractor's call. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
