Ventilation first, and professional scenting cannot help you with this particular problem - not at a low setting, not at a high one, and not with a better register. New vulcanised rubber off-gasses hardest when it is new, when it is warm and when the air is still, and the only two things that change that are time and air exchange. Fragrance laid on top of it does not remove it or cancel it; it gives you scented rubber, which is a smell your members will like less than the rubber. This page is going to cost us a sale today and we would rather write it that way, because the machine is a good purchase in about a month's conversation and a bad one this week.
Quick answers — read this first
My new rubber gym flooring dominates the smell of the whole space. Ventilation first, or can scenting help? Ventilation first, and professional scenting genuinely cannot help with this. The smell is off-gassing from newly installed vulcanised rubber - flooring, tiles, rolls and mats - and it is strongest when the material is new, when the room is warm and when the air is still. Those three conditions are the whole mechanism, and only two levers move it: time, and the volume of fresh air you push through the building. Run your air handling hard, run it through the night rather than shutting the building down into still air, keep the space cool rather than warm, open what you can open, and let the material do what it is going to do anyway. What fragrance does in this situation is add a second smell to a room that already has one. It does not neutralise, absorb or remove the first, because no ambient fragrance product does that - so what you get is scented rubber, which members find harder to place and like less than the honest version. Buy the machine after the rubber has faded, not instead of waiting.

How long does new rubber gym flooring take to stop smelling? We are not going to give you a number, because the honest answer is that it depends on things we cannot see from here and a false timeline would be worse than none. What determines it is how much material you installed, how it was manufactured and how long it was rolled and boxed before it reached you, how warm your building runs, and above all how much fresh air passes through the space each day. A cool, hard-ventilated gym with the air handling running overnight moves through it considerably faster than a warm one that is sealed shut from 11 PM to 6 AM. What we can tell you with confidence is the direction: it fades, it is at its worst when new, it improves with air and time, and it is not a permanent property of the floor you bought. Judge progress by walking in cold first thing in the morning once a week and comparing, rather than by a date on a calendar.

Why is the rubber smell worst first thing in the morning? Because a closed gym has no air exchange. Off-gassing does not stop when you lock up; the material keeps emitting through the night into a space where nothing is carrying it away, so eight or nine hours of emission accumulates in still air and the first person through the door at six in the morning walks into the entire night's worth at once. By ten it has been diluted by the air handling and by the doors opening, which is why the same floor seems fine by mid-morning and awful at opening. The fix follows directly from the mechanism: keep air moving through the building overnight in the first weeks rather than sealing it, and start the air handling well before the first member arrives rather than with them.
The short answer
Short answer: Ventilation first. Professional scenting cannot help with curing rubber, and any supplier who tells you otherwise is selling you scented rubber. New vulcanised rubber flooring and mats off-gas hardest when new, warm and in still air, and only two levers change that: time and fresh-air exchange. Run the air handling hard, run it through the night instead of sealing the building, keep the space cool, open what opens, and let it fade - it does fade, and we will not invent a timeline for it. Fragrance ADDS scent to air; it does not remove, neutralise or absorb an existing smell, so laying a register over a curing floor produces a hybrid members read as a cover-up. Come back to the scenting question once the floor has quietened: SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999 (waterless, about 1000 m3 connected, app and timer), Megh Rs 3,499, Sukoon Rs 1,899, water-based registers from Rs 299, reeds from Rs 749. Never reduce ventilation to make fragrance last longer. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
My interiors cost a fortune and the whole gym smells of rubber. Do I ventilate or do I scent?
Ventilate, and do not scent yet. 1. Understand what you are smelling. Vulcanised rubber flooring, tiles, rolls and mats off-gas after installation. It is a property of new material, it is strongest when the material is new, warm and sitting in still air, and it fades with time and air exchange. It is not a fault, it is not dirt, and it is not something cleaning addresses. 2. Accept that fragrance cannot help here, and that this is us talking ourselves out of a sale. SOSA products add fragrance to air. They do not neutralise, eliminate, absorb or counteract rubber or anything else, and nothing on our price list will. Put a register over a curing floor and the room smells of both - a hybrid your members cannot place and dislike more than the plain version. 3. Run the air, including overnight. A closed gym is a still room, so a night of emission accumulates and greets the first arrival at 6 AM with all of it. In the first weeks, keep the air handling running through the night rather than shutting the building into stillness, and start it well before opening. 4. Keep it cool. Warmth accelerates emission. A gym running hot in the evening is working against itself twice over. 5. Open what opens. Fire doors propped during closed hours where security allows, shutters up, any cross-ventilation you have. More air is always the answer and we will never suggest the opposite - not once, not as a hint. Reduced air exchange to make a fragrance last longer is indefensible advice in a room full of people breathing hard. 6. Then wait, and measure honestly. Walk in cold first thing once a week and compare. We are not going to give you a timeline, because we cannot see your building, your material or your air changes, and a date you planned around and missed would be worse than no date. 7. Then buy. When the floor has quietened, a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, about 1000 m³ of connected air, Bluetooth app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included) is the right machine for a connected reception and lounge, or a Megh (₹3,499) or Sukoon (₹1,899) with a water-based Hotel Collection register (from ₹299) for one enclosed room. Not before. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 when the air is worth scenting. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: ventilation first, and scenting cannot fix curing rubber - it gives you scented rubber. Run the air handling overnight, keep it cool, wait for it to fade, then buy: Vaayu ₹11,999, Megh ₹3,499, registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

What rubber off-gassing is, and why time and air are the only two levers

Three parts: the mechanism, the honest limit of what fragrance can do about it, and the ventilation programme that actually shortens the problem.

Why this works
The rubber programme - air and time, in that order
1Run the air handling through the night, not just during opening hours2Keep the space cool - warmth accelerates emission from new rubber3Do not scent over it: fragrance adds a smell, it never removes one4Buy the machine afterwards - Vaayu Rs 11,999 when the air is worth scenting
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The mechanism
Why new rubber smells, and what actually changes it
Vulcanised rubber flooring is the right material for a gym and it comes with a known characteristic: when it is new, it off-gasses. The smell is at its strongest immediately after installation and it declines from there. Three conditions govern how noticeable it is on any given morning. New is the first: freshly manufactured and freshly laid material emits more than the same material a season later, and rolls that were tightly packed until the day they were unrolled release what was trapped inside them. Warmth is the second: emission rises with temperature, which is why a gym that runs hot through an evening session smells more strongly of its floor than the same gym at eight in the morning in February. Still air is the third and the one owners control most directly: emission that is carried away by fresh air never reaches anyone's nose, while emission into a closed room accumulates. Nothing else on the list matters much. Cleaning does not address it, because it is not dirt. Sealing the floor is a manufacturer question and not one we would advise on. Time and air are the two levers, and you have real control over one of them.
Tip: new, warm and still - three conditions, and you can change two of them starting tonight.
2
The honest limit
Scenting a curing floor gives you scented rubber
This is the part of the answer we would prefer not to have to write, so we will write it plainly. A SOSA machine adds fragrance to air. It does not neutralise, eliminate, destroy, absorb or counteract an existing smell, and neither does any other ambient fragrance product - anyone who tells you their machine removes odour is describing something the category does not do. That has a direct consequence in your building. Run a beautiful register over a floor that is still off-gassing and the room does not smell of the register; it smells of both at once, in a combination your members find harder to identify and considerably less pleasant than the rubber on its own. Worse, they read it correctly. A new gym with expensive interiors that smells of fragrance over rubber tells a member that somebody knew about the smell and tried to cover it, which is a poorer impression than a new gym that smells of a new floor and is obviously airing out. The instinct to reach for a machine here is completely understandable, especially when the interiors cost what yours cost. It is still the wrong month for it. Get the air right, let the floor quieten, and then the same ₹11,999 buys you something that actually works.
3
The programme
What to actually do this week, and the one thing never to do
Start with the overnight problem, because it is the biggest single win and it costs nothing but a schedule change. A closed gym has no air exchange, so the material emits into still air for eight or nine hours and the first person through the door meets the entire night's accumulation at once - which is why your floor seems worst at opening and fine by eleven. In the first weeks after installation, keep the air handling running overnight rather than shutting the building down, and bring it up well before the first member arrives rather than with them. Then work on temperature: emission climbs with warmth, so a cooler building genuinely moves through this faster. Then open what you can safely open - shutters, any cross-ventilation, fire doors during closed hours where your security arrangements allow it. Then be patient and measure properly: walk in cold, first thing, once a week, and compare against the week before, because your own nose adapts within minutes of being inside and will tell you nothing useful at four in the afternoon. And the one thing never to do, in any circumstance, is reduce fresh-air exchange so that a fragrance holds longer. It is bad advice in any building and it is indefensible in a room full of people breathing hard. If a fragrance will not hold at your air change rate, the answer is a machine sized to that rate, or accepting a lighter result. Never less air.
Tip: the answer to every version of this question is more air, and it is never, ever less.
The SOSA principle
You cannot scent your way out of a curing floor. You can only ventilate your way out of it, and then wait - and the machine is a much better purchase a month after that than it is today.
New, warm and still are the three conditions that make rubber loud. Air handling overnight and a cooler room change two of them immediately.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Is there anything I can put on the floor to speed this up?
Nothing we would recommend, and we are the wrong people to ask about floor treatments in any case - coatings, sealers and cleaning chemistry for a specific rubber product are a question for the manufacturer who supplied it and for nobody else, because the wrong product can damage a surface you have just paid a great deal for. What we can tell you is which category of answer to be sceptical of. Anything sold as an odour eliminator, air purifier or neutraliser for ambient use sits outside what we will make claims about, and we will not tell you one of those solves a curing floor. Our own products do not, and we are saying so on our own page. The levers that are genuinely within your control are air exchange, temperature and time, and they are unglamorous precisely because they are the ones that work.
The gym opens in ten days and the smell is still strong. What do I do?
Ventilate as hard as the building allows, right through the nights between now and opening, and keep the space cool rather than comfortable. That is the whole of the technical answer and it is worth doing seriously - ten nights of moving air through a warm sealed box versus a cool ventilated one is a genuinely different starting position on opening day. The rest of the answer is not technical. If members comment in the first weeks, tell them the truth: the floor is new, new rubber does this, it fades, and the air handling is running overnight because of it. Owners consistently underestimate how well that lands. A new club that explains an obvious smell honestly reads as competent; the same club with a fragrance machine fighting the same smell reads as evasive, and members are extremely good at telling the two apart.
Would a stronger machine at least reduce how noticeable the rubber is?
No, and the arithmetic of it works against you rather than for you. Ambient fragrance does not subtract anything from a room; a stronger setting simply puts more scent into air that still contains everything it contained before. So a bigger machine gives you a stronger hybrid, not a cleaner room, and the stronger the fragrance the more obviously it reads as deliberate cover. There is a second problem specific to your building: a gym floor is full of people breathing hard, which means whatever is in that air is delivered to them at a far higher rate than to somebody standing at reception, so an intensity that seems reasonable to you at the front desk is experienced very differently on the floor. Higher settings are the wrong direction in a gym generally, and they are the wrong direction here specifically.
Should I run the air handling overnight forever, or only in the first weeks?
Treat the overnight run as a commissioning measure for the period while the material is loudest, and then set your long-term ventilation strategy on its own merits with your HVAC contractor - the two questions are separate and should not be answered together. What we will say without qualification is that whatever you settle on afterwards should never be reduced in order to make a fragrance last longer. That is the one trade we will not recommend under any circumstances, in any building, and it would be a particularly poor one in a gym, where the whole room is full of people moving a lot of air. If your eventual air change rate makes fragrance harder to hold - and in a well-ventilated gym it genuinely does - the honest solutions are a machine sized to that rate, more zones, or accepting a lighter result.
When I do buy, will I need a bigger machine because the gym is well ventilated?
Possibly, and it is a fair thing to plan for rather than discover. A gym is ventilated far harder than an office by design, and higher fresh-air exchange means scented air is carried away faster, so a gym needs more machine per cubic metre than a sealed space of the same size. That is the honest reason a gym is a demanding scenting job and we would rather you knew it before you bought than after. It does not usually change the recommendation dramatically, because most clubs end up scenting a reception and lounge rather than the whole floor, and that is a much smaller volume than the lease suggests. Send your floor area, your finished ceiling heights room by room, your opening hours and a list of the zones you intend to scent to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531, and we will size it against your actual building rather than against a rule of thumb.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
