Most comparisons of these two end in a shrug, so here is the verdict first: the reed diffuser wins whenever the gift has to keep working without the recipient doing anything, and the candle wins whenever the budget or the relationship is lighter than ₹749. A SOSA reed is ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml and runs about 6 to 10 weeks with no flame and nothing to switch off; a SOSA candle is ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours and asks for one action every time it is used. The constraint most people miss is the third one: a flame is often not allowed in rentals and hostels, and if the person you are buying for lives in one, the candle is not a choice at all.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser, Himalayan pine sage and cedar, from Rs 849
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage and cedar from ₹849 →
The side of this comparison that asks nothing of anybody. SOSA Mountain Breeze, ₹849 for 50ml and ₹1,349 for 130ml - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, about 6 to 10 weeks, no flame, no socket and nothing to switch off. Where a flame is not allowed, as in many rentals and hostels, this is the only one of the two that works.
Quick answers — read this first
Reed diffuser or candle - which is the better gift? The reed when it has to run by itself: ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks, no flame and nothing to switch off. The candle when the spend should be lighter: ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. A candle also needs somebody willing to light it.

Which lasts longer? The reed, by a wide margin, and they are not really the same measurement. A reed diffuser runs about 6 to 10 weeks continuously; a ₹399 candle gives about 15 to 18 hours of burn time spread over as many evenings as the person chooses to light it. One is a period of time, the other is a quantity of use.

When is a candle definitely the wrong gift? When a flame is not permitted where the person lives, which is common in rented rooms and hostels. In that case a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 is the direct substitute, and wax melts at ₹499 are not, because they need a ceramic burner at ₹599 to be usable at all.
The short answer
Short answer: Reed for effort and duration, candle for price. A SOSA reed is Rs 749 to Rs 849 in 50ml and runs about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing for the recipient to do; a SOSA candle is Rs 399 for about 15 to 18 hours and needs lighting each time. Below Rs 700, the candle wins by default. Where a flame is not allowed, such as many rentals and hostels, the reed is the only one of the two that works.
The pick: A 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 when the gift should run on its own, and a candle at ₹399 when the spend should be lighter or the gift is being carried to a dinner.
Why: The reed asks nothing of the recipient and runs about 6 to 10 weeks; the candle costs less than half as much, gives about 15 to 18 hours and needs one action every time it is used.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
Is a reed diffuser or a candle the better gift?
They separate cleanly on three things, so here is the verdict rather than a list. Effort: a reed diffuser is alcohol-free reed oil in a bottle with rattan reeds, with no flame, no socket, no water and nothing to switch off, while a candle asks for one action every single time it is used - which is either a pleasure or an obligation depending entirely on the person. Duration: the reed runs about 6 to 10 weeks, the only figure SOSA publishes, and a ₹399 candle gives about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours for the ₹699 two-candle duo; the Woodenwick candles at ₹999 publish no burn time, so none is stated here. Price: ₹749 to ₹849 for a 50ml reed against ₹399 for a single candle, which is the whole argument when the relationship is lighter than a ₹749 object. So: the reed wins when the gift has to keep working by itself, when it is going into a home that already has plenty to manage, and when a flame is not allowed - which is the case in a great many rented rooms and hostels. The candle wins when you are spending under ₹700, when you are carrying something to dinner in your hand, and when the person genuinely enjoys lighting one. Do not buy a reed simply because it costs more, and do not buy wax melts at ₹499 as a cheaper candle, because they need a ceramic burner at ₹599 and are a component rather than a gift without one. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The reed is a period of time; the candle is a quantity of use. Six to ten weeks that happen whether anybody remembers, against fifteen to eighteen hours that only happen if somebody decides they should.
Runs by itself, about 6 to 10 weeks: a 50ml reed from ₹749. Lighter spend, about 15 to 18 hours: a candle at ₹399, or ₹699 for a duo at about 30 to 36 hours.
Reed diffusers from ₹749

Effort, duration and price - the three things that actually separate them

Three things separate these two as gifts, and everything else is decoration. Take them in this order - effort first, because it is the one that decides whether the gift gets used at all, then duration, then price.

1
The first variable
Effort: one asks nothing, the other asks something every time
A reed diffuser is reed oil in a bottle with rattan reeds. There is nothing to plug in, nothing to fill, nothing to switch off and nothing to remember. It works while the household is out, asleep or thinking about something else entirely, and then after six to ten weeks it stops. That low demand is its entire argument as a gift, and it is why it suits somebody whose home already has a queue of objects waiting to be dealt with.

A candle is the opposite trade and not a worse one. It asks for one action every time it is used, which means it only runs when somebody decides it should - and for a person who enjoys that decision, the candle is the better present, because the doing is the point. The difference is not quality. It is whether the gift should depend on the recipient or not.

There is one case where this stops being a preference and becomes a rule: a flame is often not allowed in rented rooms and hostels. Where that applies, the candle is out and a 50ml reed from ₹749 is the direct substitute.
Tip: If the gift should work without anybody deciding, it is the reed.
2
The second variable
Duration: two figures that are not the same measurement
SOSA publishes exactly two durations in this comparison and it is worth knowing what each one means. A reed diffuser runs about 6 to 10 weeks - a period of elapsed time, running continuously, the same figure for the 50ml and the 130ml because the bigger bottle is drawn for a bigger room rather than a longer life. A ₹399 candle gives about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and the ₹699 two-candle duo about 30 to 36 hours - a quantity of use, spread across as many evenings as somebody chooses to light it.

Comparing them directly is a category error, but the practical difference is real: the reed's weeks happen whether anybody remembers it, and the candle's hours happen only when somebody acts. The Woodenwick candles at ₹999 publish no burn time at all, so nothing is claimed about them here, and neither do the ₹499 and ₹599 bubble candles. Where a page gives you a number SOSA has not published, that number was invented.
3
The third variable
Price, and the verdict in each band
Under ₹700 the candle wins outright, because there is no reed at that price: a single Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks is ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, and a two-candle duo is ₹699. At that level the honest alternatives are a candle or an attar from ₹379, and an attar is a taste decision, so it only works when you can name what the person already wears.

Between ₹749 and ₹849 the reed wins, because for roughly twice the price of a candle the gift stops depending on anybody and runs for weeks. Above ₹1,249 it is a reed question rather than a comparison: ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 for a 130ml if the room is one large open space, or ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 for a Day & Night duo-style set of two 50ml bottles covering two rooms. And the case for neither: if the household already keeps a scent going that it chose itself, buy a refills at ₹2,399 or ₹3,499 for what they already run, or buy nothing at all and say the words instead.
Tip: Under ₹700 it is a candle. From ₹749 it is a reed. That is most of the answer.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The size decision, before the scent decision
50ml or 130ml is a room question, not a budget question
The 50ml from ₹749 suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or anybody receiving their first diffuser. The 130ml from ₹1,249 suits an open-plan living and dining area or a large 3BHK living room, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom - a bigger bottle in the wrong room gets moved into a corridor. All five scents run about 6 to 10 weeks either way.

Work it out in this order
Settling reed against candle in four checks
  1. Is a flame allowed where they live? If not, it is a reed from Rs 749.
  2. Should the gift run without them doing anything? Reed, about 6 to 10 weeks.
  3. Spending under Rs 700? A candle at Rs 399, or Rs 699 for a duo.
  4. Do they enjoy lighting one? Then the candle is the better gift, not the cheaper.
The SOSA principle
A candle is a gift somebody has to use. A reed diffuser is a gift that uses itself. Neither is better in general; they are better for different people, and you usually know which one you are buying for.
The only case where it is not a preference is a home where a flame is not permitted, and then there is one answer.

What each one is, in the SOSA range, at the real prices

What each one actually is in the SOSA range, at list prices. Reeds: five scents in two sizes, about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness ₹749 in 50ml and ₹1,249 in 130ml, Malabar lemon and mint; Garden Bloom ₹799 and ₹1,299, British rose and night-blooming jasmine; Evening Calm ₹799 and ₹1,299, lavender and chamomile, which is the name on the bottle and a description of the materials rather than a claim about what it does; Mountain Breeze ₹849 and ₹1,349, Himalayan pine, sage and cedar; Fresh Brew ₹849 and ₹1,349, Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla. Candles: Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours, hand-poured in small batches; Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla at ₹999, which publish no burn time; bubble candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented.

The SOSA gift edit
The verdict, band by band
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Under ₹700 · the candle wins No reed exists below ₹749, so this band is a candle at ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours or a duo at ₹699 for about 30 to 36. The alternative is an attar from ₹379, which is a taste decision. It fails where a flame is not allowed, and wax melts at ₹499 do not fill the gap because they need a ₹599 burner.
₹749 to ₹849 · the reed wins A 50ml reed for about twice a candle's price, running about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing for anybody to do. The right band for a colleague, an in-law, a new flat or anybody whose taste you cannot name. It fails only where the room is a large open hall and the 50ml is under-powered.
₹1,249 to ₹1,349 · reed, if the room is big The 130ml, for one open living and dining volume. Not a comparison with candles any more - it is a room decision. It fails, expensively, in a small closed bedroom, where it gets moved into a corridor.
₹1,498 upwards · two rooms, not one louder room Duo sets of two 50ml bottles at ₹1,498, ₹1,548 and ₹1,598, or 130ml pairs at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598. The way to spend more without over-sizing a room. It fails when the gift was meant to be casual, because a boxed set is visibly an occasion.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
When it has to look like an occasion
A duo set is the readymade gift box, without anybody assembling a hamper
Two 50ml reeds in one box: Day & Night pairs Morning Freshness lemon-mint with Evening Calm lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with Mountain Breeze pine and cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla with Garden Bloom rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. The 130ml x 2 versions are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598.
See the reed duo gift sets →

Three practical notes before you decide. First, wax melts are not the budget candle: wax melts at ₹499 need a ceramic burner at ₹599, so on their own they are a component rather than a gift, and they only work for somebody who already owns a burner. Second, the SOSA body massage candle at ₹699 is a body product and not a room one, so it does not belong in this comparison at all. Third, if the reed is the answer, four of the five scents publish refills at ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml, while Evening Calm publishes no refill - which matters if you want the gift to be continuable rather than finished.

₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

Ask one question and you have your answer: should this gift keep working when nobody is thinking about it? If yes, it is the reed. If the doing is half the pleasure, it is the candle.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.

The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. A note from Sonal

The reed diffuser is the product people are least embarrassed to give and most surprised by afterwards. What they expect is a decorative object. What it actually is, is a small piece of a household that runs for six to ten weeks and then ends, which is a very different thing from an ornament somebody has to keep forever out of politeness.

The reason I recommend it so often for gifting is unromantic: you are buying for a room rather than for a person. Personal fragrance is a taste decision, and when you cannot finish the sentence she usually wears something with..., no amount of money makes the guess better. A room does not have a signature scent it is loyal to. That is why a reed diffuser works for a colleague, a client, a mother-in-law and a friend's new flat - relationships where you may like somebody very much and still have no idea what is on their dressing table.

The one thing I would press on is size, because it is where good intentions go wrong. The 130ml is not the better gift, it is the bigger room's gift. Put it in a small closed bedroom and the person will move it to a corridor within a week. A 50ml at ₹749 in the right room beats a 130ml at ₹1,249 in the wrong one every single time, and if you want to spend more, spend it on the duo set so they get two rooms rather than one very loud one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reed diffuser or a candle a better gift?
It depends on effort, duration and price. A reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 in 50ml runs about 6 to 10 weeks with no flame and nothing for the recipient to do, so it wins when the gift should work by itself. A candle at Rs 399 gives about 15 to 18 hours and needs lighting each time, so it wins under Rs 700 and for somebody who enjoys lighting one.
Which lasts longer, a reed diffuser or a candle?
The reed diffuser, and the two figures are not the same measurement. A reed runs about 6 to 10 weeks continuously, which is the only duration SOSA publishes for it. A Rs 399 candle gives about 15 to 18 hours of burn time and a Rs 699 two-candle duo about 30 to 36 hours, spread across as many evenings as somebody chooses.
What should I give somebody living in a rental or a hostel?
A reed diffuser, because a flame is often not allowed in rented rooms and hostels. A 50ml from Rs 749 has no flame, no socket and nothing to switch off. Wax melts at Rs 499 are not a substitute, because they need a ceramic burner at Rs 599 before they can be used at all.
Is a Rs 399 candle too small to give as a present?
No, and it is the honest choice when the relationship or the occasion is lighter than a Rs 749 object. A single candle is Rs 399 for about 15 to 18 hours and a two-candle duo is Rs 699 for about 30 to 36 hours. Stretching to a reed diffuser only because it costs more is the wrong reason to buy one.
Do the Rs 999 Woodenwick candles last longer than the Rs 399 ones?
SOSA publishes burn times only for the Rs 399 single and the Rs 699 duo, at about 15 to 18 hours and about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles at Rs 999 publish no burn time, so no figure is stated for them here. Any number you see quoted for them elsewhere is not from SOSA.

About SOSA's location: SOSA Home & Body is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, Maharashtra, and sends orders across India. SOSA has no shop, showroom, stockist, counter or warehouse in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mysuru or any other city, and nothing on this page should be read as claiming one; where a city is named, it refers to the homes and the buyers in that city and nothing more. No delivery date, dispatch time or order cut-off is stated anywhere. Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
