Founder Diaries · Reed Diffuser & Home Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles9 min readUpdated September 2026
The host gift problem, in one line: you are handing something to somebody in their own home, at the busiest ten minutes of their evening, and they have to receive it with one hand while something is on the hob. Which means the constraint is not taste or price - it is that the gift must need nothing done to it. No vase, no scissors, no fridge space, no decision about whether to open it now, no standing about while somebody admires it. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 is close to the only common gift that asks for none of that, and it can be put on a side table and dealt with on Sunday.
The one to carry to a house you have not been inside. SOSA Morning Freshness, ₹749 for 50ml and ₹1,249 for 130ml - Malabar lemon and mint, the least declarative of the five scents, about 6 to 10 weeks with no flame and nothing to plug in. It can be handed over and set down while somebody has a pan on the hob, which is the whole job.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a good host or hostess gift in India? Something that needs nothing done to it at the door. A 50ml SOSA reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 needs no vase, no fridge space, no flame and no socket, and it can be set down and opened days later. Flowers need a vase and trimming, and a dessert needs fridge space and a decision about when to serve it.
How much should a host gift cost? For a dinner at somebody's home, roughly ₹399 to ₹849 is the sensible band. A 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849 is the upper end of it and suits a first invitation or a formal one; a candle at ₹399 is the repeatable version for a table you sit at often. Much past ₹1,500 and the host is left feeling they owe you a return invitation.
Should I bring the 50ml or the 130ml to a dinner? The 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849, almost always. The 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 is built for an open-plan living and dining area, it is a larger object to carry and hand over, and at that price a host gift starts to look like an occasion gift. Buy the 130ml when you know the room, not because you want to arrive with more.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, and it is one of the few gifts that suits the situation exactly. A host is busy when you arrive and cannot deal with anything, and a reed diffuser needs no vase, no fridge space, no flame and no socket - it can be put down and opened later. A 50ml is Rs 749 to Rs 849 and runs about 6 to 10 weeks.
The pick: A single 50ml reed diffuser, ₹749 to ₹849 - Morning Freshness at ₹749 when you have not been to the house before.
Why: A host gift is judged on how little work it makes at the door, and a bottle of reed oil with rattan reeds makes none. Nothing to trim, chill, light, plug in or switch off.
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
What should you take to somebody's house for dinner?
Take something that needs nothing done to it, because the host has no free hands and no free minutes at the moment you arrive. That one requirement rules out most of the usual answers on practical grounds rather than aesthetic ones: cut flowers need a vase, scissors and five minutes in a kitchen somebody is working in, a dessert needs fridge space and a decision about when it gets served, a bottle needs a verdict on whether it is being opened tonight, and a candle needs to be lit to be any use, which is one more thing for somebody to think about. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 is put on a side table and can be opened on Sunday; it has no flame, no socket, no water and nothing to switch off, and it runs about 6 to 10 weeks once it is set up. Where it is the wrong call: at a table you sit at every fortnight, where ₹749 each time is too much and a candle at ₹399 is the right repeatable gift, and at a large party where twenty people are arriving and a gift for the house will simply be put in a pile. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A host gift is not judged on generosity. It is judged on how little work it makes for somebody with a pan on the hob, and a reed diffuser makes none at all.
The dinner default: a 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849, nothing to trim, chill or light. A candle at ₹399 for a table you sit at often, and leave the 130ml for a room you have actually measured.
A host gift is a logistics problem dressed up as a social one. Three things decide whether it works, and the first one has nothing to do with what is inside the box.
1
The first variable
How much work does it make at the door?
Picture the actual moment. The host opens the door with one hand, something is on the hob, two other guests are behind you, and whatever you are holding has to go somewhere. Flowers mean a hunt for a vase and for scissors in a kitchen that is already busy. A dessert or a bottle means fridge space and an immediate decision about the evening's order. A cake means somebody has to plan to serve it. Even a candle carries a small task with it, because it does nothing until it is lit, and lighting it is a decision in the middle of a dinner.
A reed diffuser is a bottle and a bundle of rattan reeds. It can be put on a side table unopened and set up on Sunday, and once it is set up there is nothing to switch on, switch off, refill or watch. That is not a small advantage in this situation, it is the entire case: the ₹749 to ₹849 50ml is the one common host gift that costs the host no attention on the night.
Tip: Ask what the host has to do with it in the next ten minutes. The right answer is nothing.
2
The second variable
How often do you sit at this table?
A first invitation and a standing Thursday habit are different problems. For a first dinner, a formal one, a new colleague's house or somebody you want to thank for the trouble of hosting, a 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 is correct and proportionate - it is a real gift without putting anybody under obligation. For a table you sit at every other week, the same bottle is wrong twice over: too much money to repeat, and a diffuser every fortnight would be absurd for any household.
The repeatable host gift is a candle at ₹399, about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo - small enough to hand over without ceremony and small enough to bring again in a month. It does need a flame, which is worth knowing for a rented flat or a hostel room where flames are often not permitted, and in that case the 50ml reed once a season beats a candle nobody lights. The other end of the scale matters too: above roughly ₹1,500 a host gift starts to feel like a debt, and the host begins thinking about the return invitation rather than the dinner.
3
The third variable
Do you know the room, or are you seeing it for the first time?
You have to buy before you get there, which is why the size question answers itself more often on a host page than anywhere else. The 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 is right in a bedroom, a study, a hallway or an entrance, and it is not wrong in a living room; the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 is right only in an open-plan living and dining area and is genuinely too much in a small closed room, where it ends up in a corridor. Since you are usually guessing, guess in the direction that cannot go badly wrong. The 130ml is not the better host gift, it is the bigger room's bottle, and it is also a larger object to carry up a staircase and hand over at a door.
The scent follows the same logic. For a house you have never been inside, Morning Freshness at ₹749, Malabar lemon and mint, is the least declarative of the five. Fresh Brew at ₹849, Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, is the strongest opinion in the range and the easiest to get wrong for a host whose taste you have only met across a table. And if you know their home already runs a diffuser they chose themselves, buy a ₹399 candle instead and leave their decision alone.
Tip: Buying blind? 50ml, and the least declarative of the five scents.
The size decision, before the scent decision
50ml or 130ml is a room question, not a budget question
The 50ml from ₹749 suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or anybody receiving their first diffuser. The 130ml from ₹1,249 suits an open-plan living and dining area or a large 3BHK living room, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom - a bigger bottle in the wrong room gets moved into a corridor. All five scents run about 6 to 10 weeks either way.
Ask what the host must do with it in ten minutes. Nothing is the right answer.
First or formal invitation: a 50ml reed at Rs 749 to Rs 849.
A table you sit at often: a candle at Rs 399, and bring one again later.
Buying blind, pick the 50ml and the least declarative of the five scents.
The SOSA principle
A host gift is the one gift chosen entirely around the recipient's hands being full. Everything else - the scent, the price, how thoughtful it looks - comes after the question of whether it can simply be set down.
Which is why a ₹749 bottle of reed oil beats a ₹749 bunch of flowers at a door, and it is not close.
Which scent and which size to carry to a dinner
Five SOSA reeds, and for a host gift the ranking is mostly about how much you are guessing. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint and the least declarative of the five, which makes it the right choice for a house you have not been inside. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night-blooming jasmine, the floral one, and the one that most clearly looks like a gift rather than like something bought for the house - useful when you are arriving at a formal dinner. Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile, which is the name on the bottle and a description of what is in it, not a claim about what it does. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry and green rather than sweet, and the safest of the three more characterful scents. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, the strongest opinion in the range, and it is a gift for a host you know well rather than one you are meeting for the second time.
The SOSA gift edit
Five things people carry to dinner, and what each one asks of the host
The option
Who it suits, and where it fails
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849
Asks nothing. No vase, no scissors, no fridge space, no flame, no socket, no decision tonight - it can be set down unopened and dealt with at the weekend, and then it runs about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to switch off. The right size for a first or formal invitation. It is the wrong gift for a table you sit at every fortnight, and for a home already running a diffuser somebody chose themselves.
Cut flowers · often the same money
Asks for the most, at the worst moment. A vase, scissors, water, and five minutes in a kitchen that is mid-service, usually while the host is also greeting somebody else. Lovely, and genuinely the wrong shape for the ten minutes you are handing it over in. If flowers are the tradition in that house, send them the next day instead, when there is time for them.
A dessert or a bottle · varies
Asks for fridge space and an immediate decision: is this being served tonight, is it going on the table now, does it change what was planned. Fine when you have been asked to bring something and you know the menu, awkward when you have not, because it quietly edits somebody else's evening.
A candle · ₹399, or ₹699 for two
Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours. The repeatable version, and the right one for a table you sit at often. It asks for a little: it does nothing until somebody lights it, and in rented rooms and hostels flames are frequently not allowed - which is where the reed has no equivalent problem.
When it has to look like an occasion
A duo set is the readymade gift box, without anybody assembling a hamper
Two 50ml reeds in one box: Day & Night pairs Morning Freshness lemon-mint with Evening Calm lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with Mountain Breeze pine and cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla with Garden Bloom rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. The 130ml x 2 versions are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598.
Two closing notes. First, format: the duo sets at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 are the only boxed format SOSA has, and for a dinner they are usually too much - they are housewarming and client gifts, and at a table they put the host under an obligation you did not mean to create. There are no hampers, no printed cards, no ribbon and no personalisation, and no card goes with an order, so the thank-you is yours to say out loud at the door. Second, longevity: four of the five scents publish refills, 300ml at ₹2,399 and 500ml at ₹3,499, while Evening Calm publishes no refill - worth knowing if you are choosing between it and Garden Bloom at the same ₹799.
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm in one box, two 50ml bottles. The readymade housewarming and client gift, without a hamper in sight.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.
Tell SOSA who it is for, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend - and you will be told which size and which scent, including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml.
A host gift is handed over sideways, to somebody who is already holding something else. The best one is the one that can be put down and forgotten about until Sunday.

The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.
The SOSA gifting range
Pick the size by the room, then the scent by how little you know about them
Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large open home or a business, not a flat
₹11,999
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-basedHotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.
Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long any fragrance will be liked, delivery or dispatch timing, any festive discount, any minimum order quantity or bulk rate, and any claim about what a person will feel on receiving a gift. Those questions go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Not sure which size or which scent? Tell SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 four things: who it is for and how well you know them, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented, and what you want to spend. You will get one straight recommendation rather than a catalogue - including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml, or a single bottle rather than the duo set. Corporate and client gifting: bulk orders are welcome and custom label or logo on product is available; quantities, terms and anything corporate are discussed on WhatsApp rather than priced on a page. Bespoke composition, a fragrance composed for you by Sonal, is a real SOSA service and is also discussed there. Where SOSA is: SOSA is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune and sends orders across India. There is no SOSA shop, stockist or counter in any other city, so anything you read here about Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mysuru or anywhere else is about the homes in those cities and not about a local branch.

A note from Sonal
The reed diffuser is the product people are least embarrassed to give and most surprised by afterwards. What they expect is a decorative object. What it actually is, is a small piece of a household that runs for six to ten weeks and then ends, which is a very different thing from an ornament somebody has to keep forever out of politeness.
The reason I recommend it so often for gifting is unromantic: you are buying for a room rather than for a person. Personal fragrance is a taste decision, and when you cannot finish the sentence she usually wears something with..., no amount of money makes the guess better. A room does not have a signature scent it is loyal to. That is why a reed diffuser works for a colleague, a client, a mother-in-law and a friend's new flat - relationships where you may like somebody very much and still have no idea what is on their dressing table.
The one thing I would press on is size, because it is where good intentions go wrong. The 130ml is not the better gift, it is the bigger room's gift. Put it in a small closed bedroom and the person will move it to a corridor within a week. A 50ml at ₹749 in the right room beats a 130ml at ₹1,249 in the wrong one every single time, and if you want to spend more, spend it on the duo set so they get two rooms rather than one very loud one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best host gift to take to a dinner party?
Something that needs nothing done to it while the host is busy. A 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 needs no vase, no fridge space, no flame and no socket, and it can be set down unopened and set up days later. Flowers need a vase and scissors at the worst possible moment, and a dessert needs fridge space and a decision about the evening.
How much should a host gift cost in India?
Roughly Rs 399 to Rs 849 for a dinner at somebody's home. A candle at Rs 399 for about 15 to 18 hours is the repeatable end, and a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 is the upper end, right for a first invitation or a formal one. Past roughly Rs 1,500 a host gift starts to feel like an obligation rather than a thank-you.
Is a reed diffuser better than flowers as a host gift?
Practically, yes, and for one reason: it asks nothing of the host at the door. Flowers need a vase, scissors and water in a kitchen that is mid-service. A reed diffuser is a bottle and a bundle of rattan reeds that can be put on a side table and opened at the weekend. If flowers are the tradition in that house, send them the following day instead.
Should I take a 50ml or a 130ml to somebody's house?
The 50ml at Rs 749 to Rs 849. You are usually buying before you have seen the room, and the 50ml is right in a bedroom, a study, a hallway or an entrance and not wrong in a living room. The 130ml at Rs 1,249 to Rs 1,349 is built for an open-plan living and dining area, is too much in a small closed room, and is a larger thing to carry and hand over.
When should I not bring a reed diffuser as a host gift?
At a table you sit at every fortnight, where Rs 749 is too much to repeat and a Rs 399 candle is the right recurring gift. At a large party, where a gift for the house goes into a pile. And when their home already runs a diffuser they chose themselves, since a different scent for the same room reads as a correction. Ask SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 for one recommendation.
Take the next step
Take the one that needs nothing done to it
A 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849 for a first or formal invitation; a candle at ₹399 for a table you sit at often and will sit at again next month; the 130ml from ₹1,249 only when you have actually seen how big the room is. Tell SOSA whose house it is and how well you know it, and you will get one recommendation.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
