SOSA commercial scenting
The generation taking over wants change; the customers who built the business want continuity
◆ ◆ ◆
What we specify
"Forty-year-old business, second generation redesigning everything at once."
Scent last and separately, so it is not swept into a change customers resent
Transition
What we specify
"Son wants contemporary; father built the customer base that pays for the refit."
A register the founder would not object to - that constraint improves the choice
Two generations
What we specify
"Staff who have worked here fifteen to twenty years."
Ask them before, not after. They stand in it far longer than any customer
Staff first
What we specify
"One original shop plus a new premium flagship."
Same fragrance in both; output set per building - the scent is what connects them
Two locations
What we answer
"Owner worried it will read as an air freshener rather than as an upgrade."
That is a level question. If anyone can name it, it is too high
Quiet premiumisation
What we specify
"Business has become wealthy; the shop looks exactly as it did in 2008."
Lighting, wear and clutter first. Scent is the last ten per cent

Give them a veto rather than a vote, ask them individually rather than in a group, and remember that they are the only people in the building who cannot walk out of it.
Quick answers — read this first
Should staff choose a shop's fragrance? They should be able to veto one rather than select one. Staff spend nine hours a day in the space and cannot leave it, which gives them a stronger claim on what is objectionable than on what is chosen.

How should they be asked? Individually and privately, with an explicit statement that objecting is acceptable. A group question produces agreement, because disagreeing in front of colleagues and the owner is costly.

What if one person objects? Take it seriously rather than averaging it. One person who reacts to a fragrance is affected for their whole working day, and the cost to them is far higher than the benefit of that particular scent to anybody else.
The short answer
Short answer: A veto, not a vote. Ask individually, and treat one objection as decisive.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained shop floor on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, introduced at the lowest setting and left there.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor dimensions, ceiling height, AC and fan use, how long customers stay, and how long your regular customers have been coming - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
Should long-serving staff decide a business's fragrance?
They should hold a veto rather than a vote, and the distinction matters. Why a veto. SOSA does not recommend scenting shared employee work areas. Somebody working a nine-hour shift cannot leave a scent they dislike or react to, and nobody there chose it. Your staff are in that space for nine hours a day, five or six days a week, for years. A customer is there for twenty minutes and can leave; a member of staff cannot, which gives them a much stronger claim on what is unacceptable than on what gets chosen. Selection is a business decision and should stay with you. Rejection should not. Why asking as a group does not work. A team asked in a room whether they mind a fragrance will almost always say they do not. Disagreeing in front of colleagues and the owner marks somebody as difficult, particularly in a business where people have worked for fifteen years and the relationships are close. That answer tells you very little. Ask individually, privately, and say explicitly that saying no is an acceptable answer and will not be held against them. Then expect a different result from the one the room gave you. What to do with one objection. Take it as decisive rather than averaging it into a majority. The person who reacts to a fragrance carries the cost for their entire working day, every day, while the benefit of that particular scent over another to everybody else is close to zero. That asymmetry is the whole argument, and it usually means trying a different register rather than abandoning the idea. What long-serving staff are uniquely useful for, separately from the veto. They know what customers actually say. They have heard thirty years of remarks about the shop that never reached you, including about how it smells, and they will tell you whether the room has a smell customers associate with the business. That is information you cannot get any other way and it is worth more than their opinion on which fragrance to pick. Ask them: what do customers say about this shop when I am not here? Specification, once nobody objects. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299 at the lowest setting, key-locked so that nobody - including a staff member who habituates and reaches for the dial - can raise it. And name one owner for the setting, with a date to check it. A change nobody can date is the change that works. Introduce at the lowest setting, leave it alone, and resist the instinct to make the improvement visible. SOSA makes no claim that scenting affects footfall, spend or retention. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: ask each of them privately, and treat one objection as the answer.
Key-locked so nobody can raise it, including staff: ₹11,999. Fragrance from ₹299.

A veto rather than a vote

The useful question to ask long-serving staff is not which scent, and it is not whether they mind.

Why this works
Asking properly
1 Ask individually and privately, never as a group in a room 2 Say explicitly that no is an acceptable answer and carries no consequence 3 Treat a single objection as decisive rather than averaging it 4 Separately, ask what customers say about the shop when you are not there
For a family business the specification is usually modest: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, introduced at its lowest setting and never raised. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Veto, not vote
They cannot leave the room
Nine hours a day for years, with no option to step out. That gives staff a stronger claim on what is unacceptable than on what is selected, and selection remains a business decision that should stay with the owner.
Tip: Rejection is theirs. Selection is yours.
02
A group answer is not data
Nobody wants to be difficult
In a close, long-tenured team, disagreeing in front of colleagues and the owner is costly. Ask individually, say no is acceptable, and expect a different answer from the one the room produced.
Tip: The room will always say yes.
03
Ask the better question
What do customers say?
Long-serving staff have heard thirty years of remarks that never reached you, including about how the shop smells. That information is unobtainable any other way and matters more than their view on which fragrance to buy.
Tip: They know what the shop sounds like from the other side.
The SOSA principle
A customer is there for twenty minutes and can leave. Your staff are there for nine hours and cannot.
Which is why they get a veto.

Asking in a way that produces an answer

A register nobody objects to is the target rather than one somebody loves, and in a shop with long-serving staff and long-standing customers those are usually the same quiet choice.

The SOSA scent edit
Who decides what
Scent Why it suits the mood
Staff A veto on any register, exercised privately
Owner The selection, the level, and the named owner of the setting
Ask staff separately What customers say about the shop when you are not there
Never A show of hands, or averaging a single objection away

Whether the shop's existing smell is worth keeping is in the existing-smell chapter, the generational question is in the two-generations chapter, and the staff-area principle is in the open-plan chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar

Honest notes for family businesses in transition: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Long-serving staff spend far longer in the scented environment than any customer and should be consulted before installation, with at least one working area kept outside the scented volume. A restrained register held unchanged is what reads as upkeep; a distinctive or fashionable one reads as a change of identity. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases footfall, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or customer spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it feels - and is not a commercial performance claim. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The small-room option Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 A 500ml water-based cool-mist diffuser for a single cabin or a small desk. It adds a little humidity to the room, which is the reason it is not the choice for a monsoon-season space. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

A note from Sonal

The generational handover is the most delicate brief I get, and the fragrance is never the difficult part. The difficult part is that the person redesigning the business and the people who made it successful want opposite things. The next generation wants the shop to feel like their decade; the customers of twenty-five years want to walk into somewhere they recognise.

Scent is unusually useful in that argument precisely because it is the one change nobody audits. New signage, new counters, new uniforms - regulars register each of those instantly, and a proportion of them experience it as loss. A restrained scent is felt rather than itemised, which is why it modernises without appearing on the list of things that are different now. Choose something the founding generation would not object to. That constraint produces a better choice, not a compromised one.

One more thing, and I say it in every one of these conversations: ask the staff. In a forty-year-old business somebody has stood behind that counter for two decades, and they will be in this air for nine hours a day. They are more exposed than any customer and they are almost never consulted. Fragrance is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the sizing and zoning method applies whatever equipment a business finally buys.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Staff working in a scented environment are exposed for far longer than customers and should be consulted before installation, with a working area available outside the scented volume. Fragrance preference is personal and retail floors are crowd environments, so gentle and broadly acceptable registers are recommended.
