SOSA commercial scenting
A new building has no memory attached to it yet - which is the opportunity, and the trap
◆ ◆ ◆
What we answer
"Sales gallery opening while construction continues on the same site."
Dust, paint and new-material odour come first. Fragrance over curing paint is a cover-up
Construction phase
What we specify
"Double-height experience centre with a full glass facade facing west."
Height and afternoon solar gain both change the job; measure volume, not floor plate
New-build volume
What we answer
"Developer asks whether scenting should be in the HVAC drawings."
If the building will be scented at all, yes - retrofitting around a finished ceiling is the expensive route
Design stage
What we specify
"Sales gallery and the sample apartment next door."
Different jobs. The gallery is a brand space; the sample flat should smell like a home, or like nothing
Two spaces
What we specify
"New brand with no existing customer memory to build on."
Then consistency from day one matters more than distinctiveness - pick something you can hold for years

At project one, which sounds premature and is the opposite. A standard set before there is anything to reconcile costs a decision; a standard set at project three costs two retrofits and an argument.
Quick answers — read this first
When should a developer create a standard signature scent? At the first project. Setting a standard before there is anything to reconcile costs only the decision itself, while creating one later means changing existing galleries, explaining the change and losing whatever association the earlier register had built.

Is it worth doing for a single project? Yes, because a gallery runs for years with repeat visits. But the standard matters most for the second and third projects, which is why it should be written even when only one exists - the document is for the developer you will be, not the one you are.

What should the standard contain? The fragrance, the machine type by gallery size, the intensity setting recorded per site, the placement principle, which zones stay unscented, and a named owner. One page, kept with the brand guidelines.
The short answer
Short answer: At project one. Setting a standard costs a decision; retrofitting one across three galleries costs two changes and an argument.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained gallery or reception, the Aangan at ₹25,999 where scenting rides the building's own HVAC, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.

How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
When should an Andhra developer create a standard signature scent across projects?
At the first project, and the reasoning is about cost rather than ambition. Setting a standard when only one gallery exists costs a single decision. Setting one at project three means changing two existing galleries, explaining to a marketing team why their choice is being overridden, and discarding whatever association the earlier registers had begun to build. The cheapest moment is always the one before there is anything to reconcile, and that is true of a scent standard exactly as it is of a typeface. Write it even if you only have one project, because the document is for the developer you intend to be. What the standard should contain is short and specific: the fragrance itself; the machine type by gallery size - a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a contained gallery, an Aangan at ₹25,999 where it rides the HVAC; the intensity setting recorded per site rather than fixed globally, because each building is a different volume; the placement principle; which zones stay unscented, including the sample apartment; and a named owner who holds the settings and orders the refills. One page, kept with the brand guidelines rather than the facilities files, so that a new agency or fit-out contractor meets a standard instead of a blank space. The one thing not to standardise is the intensity number - a single figure applied to five different buildings produces five different results. SOSA makes no claim that a standard scent affects enquiries or sales. Fragrance from ₹299, and fragrance is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: write the standard at project one, standardise the fragrance not the setting, and keep it with the brand guidelines.
A portfolio standard is a page and a fleet: Vaayu at ₹11,999 for contained galleries, Aangan at ₹25,999 where it rides the HVAC, one fragrance from ₹299 across all of them, with settings recorded per site.

Why the cheapest moment is the first one

Developers usually assume a standard is something you formalise once you have a portfolio, which is precisely backwards.

Why this works
What the standard contains
1 The fragrance, named, and the machine type by gallery size 2 Intensity recorded per site, never a single global number 3 The placement principle and which zones stay unscented 4 A named owner for settings and refills, filed with the brand guidelines
For a new gallery the usual specification is a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, or an Aangan at ₹25,999 where it is designed into the HVAC at fit-out stage. Fragrance from ₹299 - introduced once the building has finished off-gassing.
01
The cost curve
It only gets more expensive
At project one a standard costs a decision. At project two it costs a decision and one retrofit. At project three it costs two retrofits, a conversation with whoever specified the others, and the loss of any association the earlier choices had built. Nothing about the decision gets easier or better-informed by waiting - you will not know more about which register suits your brand after three inconsistent galleries than you do before the first one, because inconsistency teaches you nothing.
Tip: Three inconsistent galleries teach you nothing about which was right.
02
What not to standardise
The setting, not the scent
A standard that specifies one intensity for every gallery produces a different perceived result in each, because galleries differ in volume, height, glazing and air handling. The scent is the constant and the output is the variable, set per building and recorded on the site sheet. This is the single most common error in portfolio-wide standards, and it is the reason some developers conclude their standard is not working when what is not working is the way it was written.
03
Where the document lives
With the logo, not with the facilities files
A scent standard filed with maintenance records will be discovered by nobody and overridden by everybody. Filed with the brand guidelines, alongside the typeface and the colour values, it meets the same people who make every other identity decision - which is who actually needs to see it when project two is briefed. It should name an owner, and that owner should hold the per-site settings and place the refill orders, because a gallery that runs dry has silently left the standard.
Tip: A standard nobody can find is not a standard.
The SOSA principle
The cheapest moment to set a standard is always the one before there is anything to reconcile.
Which for a developer is the first project, not the third.

What the standard should actually say

Choose a register that suits a serious, considered purchase and that will still be defensible when the fourth project opens.

Scent Why it suits the mood
Project one A decision. The cheapest and best-informed moment there will ever be
Project three Two retrofits, an internal argument, and lost association

Why a new brand is at an advantage rather than a disadvantage here is in the new brand chapter, the launch decision for the first gallery is in the sales gallery chapter, and the retail version of holding a standard across sites is in the chain chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar
Option Right for What it actually is Price
Reed diffusers One small room, no power point, no maintenance Alcohol-free reed oil, passive, silent. Good for a single cabin or a small front desk, not for a hall from ₹749
Boond / Sukoon ultrasonic A desk, a single cabin, a small reception Water-based cool mist; runs on Hotel Collection fragrance, adds a little humidity to the room ₹899 / ₹1,899
Megh ultrasonic (6L) A larger waiting area where visible mist is wanted 6L tank, water-based. Still a room machine rather than a floor machine ₹3,499
SOSA Vaayu Reception, lounge, corridor, a contained showroom floor Waterless cold-air, up to 1000m³ (about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank, app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38 dB, key-lock for public areas ₹11,999
SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes for new commercial spaces: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Construction dust, curing paint, adhesives and new-material off-gassing are resolved by ventilation and time, not by fragrance - introducing a scent over them masks a condition rather than finishing it, and visitors generally recognise the difference. Ceiling height and glazing change the air volume and the thermal behaviour of a new building substantially, so sizing is done from drawings and measurements rather than floor area. SOSA makes no claim that scenting influences sales or enquiry conversion. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, including Vijayawada, Guntur and the Amaravati region, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The small-room option Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 A 500ml water-based cool-mist diffuser for a single cabin or a small desk. It adds a little humidity to the room, which is the reason it is not the choice for a monsoon-season space. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

A note from Sonal

New buildings are the only case where I tell people to think about scent before the fit-out rather than after, and it is a practical point rather than a romantic one: if a building is going to be scented at all, that belongs in the HVAC conversation while the ceiling is still open. Retrofitting around finished plaster is how a simple decision becomes an expensive one.

But there is a trap in new construction, and it is the one I see most in fast-building regions. A new space smells of itself - curing paint, adhesives, new textiles, site dust drifting in. Putting fragrance on top of that is not scenting, it is masking, and visitors read it accurately. Let the building finish off-gassing, ventilate properly, then introduce a scent you intend to keep.

Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Frequently asked questions

When should a developer create a standard signature scent?
At the first project. Setting a standard before there is anything to reconcile costs only a decision; creating one at project three costs two retrofits and lost association.
Is it worth writing a standard with only one project?
Yes. The document is for the developer you intend to be, and it is what a new agency or fit-out team meets when project two is briefed.
What should the standard contain?
The fragrance, machine type by gallery size, intensity recorded per site, the placement principle, which zones stay unscented, and a named owner.
What should not be standardised?
The intensity number. Galleries differ in volume, height, glazing and air handling, so one figure across several buildings produces several different results.
Where should the document be kept?
With the brand guidelines alongside the typeface and colours, not in the facilities files where nobody making identity decisions will find it. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. In new construction, dust, curing paint, adhesives and new-material off-gassing are addressed by ventilation and time; ambient fragrance introduced over them masks a condition rather than resolving it.
