Start where the fragrance actually is. The reeds are wet with close to neat oil, so the air touching them is the most concentrated air the system produces, and smelling them tells you whether the source is healthy. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Check the obvious things first: how long the bottle has been running, since a SOSA reed diffuser gives about six to ten weeks; whether the reeds have been flipped recently; and whether the small room is genuinely enclosed, because an extractor fan running continuously or a permanently open ventilator changes the test completely. Also consider your own sense of smell on the day, since a cold, an allergy or simple adaptation can flatten everything. That is a result we would want to look at properly rather than answer with a general article.
Does the season change the result of these tests?
Yes, enough to be worth allowing for. Evaporation is temperature-driven, so the same diffuser is livelier in a warm month than in a cold one, and an air-conditioned room works against you twice by lowering the temperature that drives evaporation while raising the air movement that removes the result. Winter rooms with windows open for fresh air behave similarly. This does not change the logic of the tests, but it does mean a borderline result in January might read differently in May, and it explains why people write to us in summer saying their diffuser suddenly improved. If you are on the edge, run the tests again in a different week before deciding. The verdict that matters is the one you get repeatedly.
Can I run these tests with a candle or a spray instead?
They are designed for a passive diffuser, and the reasoning transfers only partly. A candle adds a small amount of air movement through the warmth of its flame, so it produces slightly more distribution than a reed of similar quality and the small-room test is less decisive. A spray gives a burst of high concentration that disperses within minutes rather than a continuous source, so the reeds test has no equivalent and the re-entry test measures only how recently you sprayed. What does transfer is the central logic: if the format has no way of moving fragrance outward continuously, no change of fragrance will produce room coverage. That is the question the tests exist to answer, and the answer is the same across every passive format.
If it is a delivery problem, should I go straight to the Safar?
Only if your sentence is about the space you personally occupy rather than about the whole room, because those are genuinely different products. Do I have to stop using my reed diffuser if I buy a machine?
Not at all, and most people who write to us afterwards keep both. The reed goes where being near it is the point - a bathroom, a powder room, an entryway console, a bedside table - and the machine handles the room you actually want changed. They do not fight each other as long as you are not running two very different characters in connected air, which produces a muddle rather than a blend; keeping the registers related or keeping them in separate rooms solves that entirely. There is also a practical charm to keeping a passive bottle in the bathroom, where no socket exists and no machine is wanted. Reeds from Rs 749 are inexpensive enough that this is a sensible arrangement rather than a redundancy.
