When is the answer no? Four cases. If you are also close to the other person. If you were told in confidence and a parcel would reveal that you know. If the two of you have never exchanged gifts and a box would be a strange new thing. And if they have made it clear they want this kept small. In all four, a message is better than an object.
Does a gift make it awkward? It can, and the thing that makes it awkward is scale, not the gesture. Something under ₹1,000 that gets used up reads as a note with an object attached. Something larger reads as a statement, and the person then has to work out what the statement means and reply to it.
Working through the yes, and the four versions of no
The question is a real one and it deserves better than a blanket yes. Three things decide it: who you are to everybody involved, how you came to know, and what size the object is. Take them in that order, because the first two can rule the gift out entirely and the third only changes what you buy.
The same logic covers a colleague, a cousin's partner, a friend of a friend. The further out you sit, the more a parcel announces a level of involvement you may not actually have. A short message from the edge of somebody's life is welcome. A gift from the edge of it asks them to work out what the relationship is now.
If you heard it from them directly, that is an invitation to respond and a small gift is a perfectly ordinary way to do it. If you heard it any other way, start with a message that leaves them room to say nothing. If they answer, you can send something afterwards. The order matters more here than the object.
If no, be careful. A first-ever gift arriving in a week like this marks the week rather than the friendship, and it silently changes the register between you at a moment when the person has no spare capacity to work out what the change means. The honest move is to write instead, and if you want to send something anyway, keep it at ₹399 or ₹379 where it reads as a gesture rather than an escalation. Do not buy a ₹1,498 duo set or anything in that range as a first gift to somebody - that is not generosity, it is a demand for a reaction.
- Are you close to the other person too? If yes, send words, not an object.
- Were you told in confidence? Then message first and send nothing yet.
- Never exchanged gifts before? Write instead, or keep it under Rs 400.
- Otherwise: a candle at Rs 399, sent with no speech attached.
If the answer is yes, what and how big
If the answer is yes, the shortlist is narrow and the prices are plain. A SOSA candle at ₹399 - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time - is the default, because it is the smallest thing in the range that still reads as chosen. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 is the same scale but only works if you can name something they already wear. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 running about 6 to 10 weeks is the upper end of what is appropriate here, and it suits a close friend rather than an acquaintance. Above that the register changes: the ₹999 Woodenwick candles, the ₹1,055 Attar Trio and the ₹1,498 reed duo sets are all fine gifts and all the wrong ones for this particular week.
| The option | Who it suits, and where it fails |
|---|---|
| You are close to both people · no | A parcel from you is not a neutral object here and there is no version of it that is. Send a message, ring, or turn up with nothing. The thing you want is to be available, and being available does not come in a box. If you badly want to do something material, pay for a coffee when you see them rather than posting anything. |
| You were told in confidence · not yet | A gift goes on the record and has to be acknowledged, which takes the choice about who knows out of their hands. Message first, leave room for them to say nothing, and send something afterwards only if they answer. The order is the whole point - the object is not the problem, the sequence is. |
| You have never exchanged gifts · probably not | A first-ever gift arriving in this particular week marks the week rather than the friendship, and quietly changes the register between you at a bad moment. Write instead. If you want to send something anyway, keep it at ₹379 to ₹399 so it reads as a gesture rather than an escalation. |
| You are a close friend and they told you themselves · yes, small | Send it. A candle at ₹399 or a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, with no speech attached and nothing asked in return. Add your own two sentences separately. The only way to get this wrong from here is to make it bigger than it needs to be. |
Whichever way the four tests fall, one rule holds: the object cannot carry the message, so do not ask it to. SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note-with-the-order service, which means the sentence is yours to send however you like - a text, a voice note, a call. Write it first, before you look at anything, because if you cannot write it the parcel will not fix that. And if you find yourself choosing between the larger gift and picking up the phone, pick up the phone. The gift goes alongside that, in the ₹379 to ₹1,000 band, or it does not go at all.
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.
| Gift | What it is | Who it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOSA scented candles | Hand-poured, small batches | Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours | from ₹399 |
| SOSA attars | Alcohol-free roll-on oil | Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is | from ₹379 |
| SOSA reed diffusers | Passive home fragrance | Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks | from ₹749 |
| SOSA Attar Trio | Pack of three attars | Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear | from ₹1,055 |
| SOSA wax melts | Flameless, needs a burner | Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too | from ₹499 |
| SOSA car fragrance | Hanging or spray | Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price | from ₹449 |
| SOSA reed duo sets | Two reeds in one box | Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion | from ₹1,498 |
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
- Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
- Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
- Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
- Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.

Versailles
The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.
What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.
So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.
