Because two different things are being confused: how rich the fragrance is, and how much of it gets into your air. 1. The concentrate sets the quality of each breath. The reeds, not the formula, are the tap
Think of the bottle as a reservoir and the reeds as a tap that only opens to one setting. Oil climbs the porous sticks by capillary action and can only leave the system by evaporating from the wet surface exposed to the air. That surface is a few square centimetres of stick, and the rate at which molecules leave it is governed by temperature, air movement and the oil's own volatility. Notice what is not on that list: how concentrated the liquid is. A richer formula changes what each departing molecule smells of, and it cannot increase how many depart, because departure is a surface-and-conditions problem, not a strength problem. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Flipping brings the saturated end of each stick into the air and exposes a freshly wet surface, which lifts the evaporation rate for a while and makes the fragrance more noticeable near the bottle. What it also does is empty the bottle faster, because every bit of extra evaporation comes out of the same reservoir. So think of flipping as maintenance that keeps a reed performing as it should rather than as a way to make it perform beyond what it is. If you flip and the room still reads quiet at a distance, that is the clearest possible confirmation that you are looking at a distribution question and not a fragrance question.
Does a warmer room make the diffuser stronger?
Yes, and this is one of the few genuinely free levers you have. Evaporation is temperature-driven, so the same bottle is livelier in May than in December and livelier in a warm, still room than in an air-conditioned one. That is why people notice their diffuser more in summer and assume something changed about the oil. Nothing did. But treat this as an explanation rather than a plan: you cannot heat a bedroom to improve a fragrance, and an air conditioner does two things at once, raising the air movement that removes scent while lowering the temperature that produces it. If your room runs cool and busy, that is simply a room that asks more of a passive system than a passive system can give.
Is a subtle fragrance actually a problem?
Often it is exactly what people want, and it is worth asking yourself honestly before spending. A gentle presence that you notice when you walk past the console or settle into bed, and stop noticing after a few minutes, is correct dosing by any standard we would defend. Fragrance that announces itself continuously in a room you live in becomes tiring, and in a shared home with children, elderly relatives or pets, gentle is not a compromise but the right setting. The question worth answering is not strong or weak, it is where. If you want presence where you are, a reed placed properly already gives you that. If you want the room itself to have changed when you open the door, that is a different job and it needs a machine.
Do more reeds make a powerful concentrate work harder?
More reeds increase the evaporating surface, so more oil leaves the bottle per hour, the air near the diffuser gets stronger and the bottle empties sooner. What they do not do is add any force to carry fragrance across the room, because the reeds are the tap, not the pump. The result is a more intense hot spot and a shorter-lived diffuser, which is a fair trade if what you wanted was a stronger moment as you walk past, and a poor one if what you wanted was an evenly scented room. Our honest advice is to use all the reeds supplied when you want it more present nearby, and to stop there rather than buying extra packs in the hope that a threshold exists further up. It does not.
