What you found
You located the source, and the source is doing its job
The reeds are not a container, they are a wick. Porous stick, oil climbing through it by capillary action, wet surface at the top exposed to the air. That wet surface is where every molecule of fragrance in your home comes from, so it is by definition the strongest place in the room, and the layer of air in contact with it is very nearly saturated. When you put your nose there and get a full, correct, recognisable version of the fragrance you bought, you have proved several useful things at once: the oil has not gone off, the reeds are not blocked, capillary action is working, and evaporation is ongoing. In diagnostic terms that is a clean bill of health for the product, delivered in about two seconds and at no cost. It is also, quietly, the end of the fragrance-quality conversation - because the only thing left to explain is what happens between that wet surface and where you were standing.

What happens next
The collapse between the sticks and your chair
Between the reeds and your reading chair, one thing occurs: the same small continuous output has to occupy an enormously larger quantity of air. A 120 sq ft bedroom under a 10 ft ceiling holds 120 x 10 = 1,200 cubic feet, which is about 34 cubic metres; a 150 sq ft one holds 1,500 cubic feet, about 42 cubic metres. The thin film of near-saturated air at the sticks might be a few cubic centimetres. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. How often should I flip the reeds, and does it really help?
About once a week is right, and yes, it helps in a specific and limited way. Flipping brings the saturated lower end of each stick up into the air and exposes a freshly wet surface, which briefly raises the evaporation rate and makes the fragrance more noticeable near the bottle. What flipping cannot do is add reach, because it acts on the source and not on the delivery. If you flip and the reeds smell wonderful while the room is unchanged, you have just run the reeds test again and got the same honest answer.
Should I add more reeds so more of the fragrance escapes?
More reeds do increase the evaporating surface, so more oil leaves the bottle each hour and the air near the diffuser becomes stronger, at the cost of a bottle that empties sooner. If your aim is a more definite moment as you walk past the console or reach for the lamp, that is a fair trade and we would not talk you out of it. If your aim is to get the fragrance across the room, extra sticks do not help, because they raise output without adding any force to carry it. You would be paying for a more intense hot spot and a shorter-lived diffuser rather than for the coverage you want. Use all the reeds supplied, judge the result, and if the room is still the problem, the answer is a mechanism rather than more wick.
Could my reeds be blocked or the oil have gone bad?
It is possible and it is easy to check, though it is rarely the explanation for the situation described on this page. Blocked reeds usually show up as a diffuser that smelled fine for the first few weeks and then faded noticeably near the bottle, with sticks that look darkened or crusted at the top; the fix is to flip them, and if that does nothing, to replace them. Oil that has genuinely turned smells different rather than merely quieter - flat, sharp or unlike the fragrance you remember. The reason neither usually applies here is that the reader who reaches this article can smell the fragrance perfectly well at the sticks, which is exactly what a healthy wick and a good oil produce. A healthy source and a quiet room is a delivery story.
Does the same thing happen with an ultrasonic diffuser?
Much less, and that is the entire reason to own one. An ultrasonic actively throws a fine mist of fragrance and water into the room, so instead of a steep gradient around a source you get a distribution across the space, and the difference between standing next to it and standing across the room is far smaller. It is not literally uniform - anything nearer the machine reads a little stronger - but it is the difference between a hot spot and a scented room. The honest trade-offs are the water: added humidity, some dilution of the fragrance, and in hard-water areas a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. Is it bad to keep sniffing the reeds so closely?
It is not harmful in any way we would warn about, but it is worth knowing that it teaches your nose the wrong lesson. Repeatedly sampling the most concentrated point in the system trains you to compare everything against a reading you can never get from across the room, which makes an ordinary, correctly performing diffuser feel like a failure. It also accelerates olfactory adaptation, where your nose stops registering a fragrance you are continuously exposed to, so the more you check the less you notice. A better habit is to leave the room for ten minutes and walk back in, which is the only test that measures what a visitor would experience. Wash your hands after handling reeds, keep the bottle on a tray, and judge the room from the doorway rather than from the sticks.
