In that order, and the scent machine is the last decision rather than the first. Shoe-removal areas, then ventilation, then cleaning and materials, then upholstery and flooring, then AC airflow, then the fragrance-free clinical zones marked on the plan, and only then the machine - its volume, its socket, its position and its timer. Do them in that sequence and each decision makes the next one cheaper. Do them backwards and you will buy a machine to fight a shoe rack.

You are asking the right question at the only moment it can be answered properly. Almost everything on this list is a drawing decision, and a drawing decision costs nothing today and is either expensive or impossible in eighteen months. Whether your air conditioning brings in outside air or only recirculates is a line on a services drawing now and a rebuild later. Where the supply and return grilles sit is a five-minute conversation now and a ceiling strip-out later. Whether the shoe store has a door and a vent is a joinery detail now and a permanent compromise later.

And the reason the order is fixed rather than a matter of preference is one sentence that governs this whole bank: fragrance adds scent and never removes odour. Not shoe odour, not the smell of a warm assessment room, not disinfectant, not the flat quality of air that has been recirculating since ten in the morning. A scent laid over an existing smell does not cancel it - the two arrive at the nose together and produce a third smell that is usually worse than either alone, and in a small closed clinical room that third smell is what the patient carries out of the building. Fragrance adds scent; it does not remove odour, and it is not a clinical product. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a clinic is scented volume by volume and the clinical rooms are usually left out.
Straight answer
What is the actual sequence for designing a podiatry centre so that it smells right from day one?
Seven decisions, in this order, and the machine is the seventh.

One. Shoe-removal areas. Decide where shoes go before you decide anything else, because in a foot clinic this is the source and everything downstream is cheaper once it is solved. Footwear needs a defined home with a door, ventilated if you can manage it, and located out of both the treatment rooms and the seating. Not a rack in the corner of the waiting area. Not the floor beside a patient's chair. Not under the treatment couch. A cupboard, a bank of cubbies with doors, a small store with a vent - anywhere with a boundary and preferably a way for air to leave it. Draw it now: 40 sq ft at a 9 ft ceiling is 360 cubic feet, about 10 cubic metres, and it is the ten cubic metres that determines what the other six hundred smell like.

Two. Ventilation. Ask your services consultant one sentence: does the air conditioning bring in any outside air, or does it only recirculate what is already in the building? Decide this at the services stage, because it is nearly impossible to add later without opening ceilings and revisiting plant. In a building where patients remove shoes all day and, in many centres, other people exert themselves in a gym or on a treadmill, air that is genuinely changed rather than merely stirred is the single largest determinant of how the place smells. Extraction belongs where extraction belongs - the WC, the sluice, the store, the shoe cupboard, a casting or grinding room - and it should run as routine rather than when somebody remembers.

Three. Cleaning and materials. Specify wipeable, sealed and launderable on the drawing rather than buying them afterwards. Sealed floors with coved skirtings rather than open joints. Wipeable wall finishes to a sensible height in clinical rooms. Worktops with as few seams as possible. Removable, washable covers on anything upholstered. This is a specification, not a shopping trip, and it is the difference between a building that can be cleaned properly and one where cleaning is a heroic act performed against the fabric.

Four. Upholstery and flooring, treated as the reservoirs they are. Soft furnishing and porous flooring hold what the room has been doing all day and release it slowly for hours afterwards. Wiping a fabric chair does very little; laundering it does everything. In a foot clinic this is not a housekeeping footnote, it is a design decision, because it determines whether the end of the day smells of the day. Minimise fabric in reception, choose washable covers where you keep it, avoid porous flooring near the shoe-removal point and the fitting bench, and put the laundry on a schedule rather than on somebody noticing.

Five. AC airflow. Where the supply and return grilles sit decides where fragrance goes, and whether it reaches a room you meant to keep neutral. A supply grille blowing across the reception will carry scent to wherever it is aimed; a return grille near the desk will pull it straight out; a shared return between a corridor and a treatment room will deliver fragrance to a room you marked zero; and a corridor with doors undercut for airflow can behave as a plenum and distribute quietly to everything on it. Mark supply and return on the plan and look at what they connect before you place anything.

Six. The fragrance-free clinical zones, marked on the plan with a reason beside each. Treatment cabins: patient reclined, door shut, small volume, clinician there all day. Procedure and nail-surgery rooms: instruments and dressings open. Casting, orthotics and workshop: dust and extraction, and a technician standing in it for eight hours. Gait and assessment: people walk, run and are watched closely. Physiotherapy gym: bodies exerting themselves, so the air is changed and never traded. Sluice and instrument area: extraction, not fragrance. A zero with a reason survives a change of manager; a zero without one gets a plug-in in month seven from somebody who thought the room was being neglected.

Seven. The scent machine, last and smallest. Size it to the connected volume of the reception, not to the building: a 300 sq ft reception at 11 ft is 3,300 cubic feet, about 93 cubic metres, against a whole 2,000 sq ft centre at an average 11 ft, which is 22,000 cubic feet or about 623 cubic metres. You are scenting roughly fifteen per cent of the air in your building. Specify a live socket in the right place at the electrical stage. Place the machine in the reception volume, out of the direct blast of a supply grille and away from a return. Set the timer to opening hours so the room is right when the first patient arrives and the machine is not running all night into a closed building. If you take a single page from this bank into a design meeting, take this list and put it on the drawing itself rather than in a document. A drawing is what the contractor builds from and what the manager inherits. A document is what nobody reads in year three.

Three things worth adding to the drawing that are almost always missed.

The shoe store needs a door, a vent and a location. All three, and the location is the part people get wrong: it wants to be near the point where shoes actually come off, out of the treatment rooms, and out of the line of the seating. A beautiful ventilated cupboard on the wrong side of the building will not get used, and a shoe store that is not used is a decorative cupboard.

The socket goes where the machine should be, not where it will fit. Five minutes at the electrical stage; impossible afterwards without a trailing lead, which is exactly how machines end up in corridors. Mark it on the plan as "diffuser socket" so nobody reassigns it to a printer.

The zeros go on the drawing with reasons. "Cabins: no fragrance - patient reclined, door closed, 25 cubic metres." "Gym: no fragrance - air exchange only." "Fitting room: no fragrance - open footwear." Those short sentences are what make the arrangement survive you.

And the sentence to give your architect if you give them nothing else: the clinics that smell right are not the ones with the best machine. They are the ones where the shoes have somewhere to go and the air actually gets changed.

The seven decisions in order, and why the machine is the last one

It is worth being explicit about why the order is what it is, because if you understand the logic you can apply it to decisions this page does not cover.

Everything in a building that affects how it smells falls into one of four categories, and they form a strict hierarchy. Sources put something into the air. Ventilation takes air out and brings other air in. Reservoirs hold what has been in the air and release it later. Additions put something else in. Fragrance is the fourth category and only the fourth: it adds, it never subtracts, and it has no effect at all on the first three.

Shoe-removal areas are source control. Ventilation is ventilation. Cleaning and materials, upholstery and flooring are reservoir management, which is the category most commonly under-designed because reservoirs release slowly and therefore never look like the cause of anything. AC airflow is a distribution question that governs both ventilation and where any addition ends up. The fragrance-free zones are a decision about which volumes receive an addition at all. And the machine is the addition itself, arriving last because it is the only step that cannot compensate for any of the six before it.

The second reason for the order is money, and it runs the same way. A shoe cupboard drawn into the joinery package costs a fraction of a retrofitted one and looks like part of the building rather than an apology. A fresh-air provision decided at the services stage costs very little and is a rebuild afterwards. A grille position moved on a drawing is free. A washable upholstery specification is the same price as a non-washable one at the moment of ordering and enormously cheaper across five years. The machine, meanwhile, can be bought on a Tuesday and moved on a Wednesday. So doing the expensive-to-change things first is not a philosophy, it is programme management.

Do the arithmetic yourself as you go, because it keeps the last decision honest. Floor area multiplied by ceiling height gives cubic feet; cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. A 2,000 sq ft centre at an average 11 ft is 22,000 cubic feet, about 623 cubic metres. Its 300 sq ft reception at 11 ft is 3,300 cubic feet, about 93 cubic metres. That is about fifteen per cent of the building's air, and it is the only part of it you are going to scent - which means the machine you need is smaller than the fit-out budget assumed. Assume 9 to 12 ft in clinical rooms and up to 14 in a gym, and say which you assumed, because between 9 ft and 14 ft is more than half as much air again for the same footprint.

Step one: shoe-removal areas. A foot clinic is the one commercial environment where the customer takes their shoes and socks off, and that single fact makes source control the first design decision rather than a housekeeping afterthought.

Decide three things on the drawing. Where shoes come off: a defined point rather than wherever the patient happens to be sitting, ideally near the entrance to the clinical area. Where they go: a defined home with a door - a cupboard, cubbies with fronts, a small store - and not an open rack, because an open rack in a waiting area is an open source at floor level for the length of every appointment. And where that home is: out of the treatment rooms entirely, and out of the line of the seating.

Size it and vent it. A 40 sq ft store at a 9 ft ceiling is 360 cubic feet, about 10 cubic metres, and a small extract from that ten cubic metres does more for the building than anything you can put in the reception.

Extend the same thinking to the specialist rooms. In an orthotics or gait centre, trial footwear needs its own ventilated store with a door - open shelving full of trial shoes at the back of reception is the commonest mistake in that category, borrowed from retail where the stock is boxed and unworn. In a fitting room, give patients somewhere to put their own shoes that is not the floor beside the bench. And give people somewhere to put a sock that is not inside a warm shoe on a warm floor.

None of that is a purchase, which is exactly why it belongs first.

Step two: ventilation. Now the question that has to be asked before the ceiling closes, in one sentence: does the air conditioning bring in any outside air, or does it only recirculate what is already in the building?

Ask it of your services consultant, in writing, and get an answer. Most small Indian commercial fit-outs recirculate, because splits and cassettes cool and stir but do not exchange, and a sealed air-conditioned clinic with the windows shut is running the same air past the same people all day. In a building where shoes come off and where a physiotherapy gym may have people exerting themselves, that is the largest single determinant of how the place reads at five in the afternoon.

What to specify while you still can: a fresh-air provision if the system will take one; extraction where extraction belongs - the WC, the sluice and instrument area, the store, the shoe cupboard, and any casting, grinding or workshop space - running as routine rather than on somebody's memory; and an operable window somewhere in the clinical area if the building allows it, because a room aired between lists is a completely different room from one aired at seven in the evening, which was smelling of itself from three.

And the rule that governs this step and that this page will never break: never reduce ventilation, close a vent or turn down extraction so that a fragrance carries further or lasts longer. In any phrasing. A well-ventilated centre is genuinely harder to scent, and that is a good problem to have. Ventilation wins every time, and the scenting problem is solved with placement, sizing and level instead.
Tip: Draw the shoe store with a door and a vent, and ask the services consultant whether the AC brings in outside air. Both are free now and effectively impossible later.

Steps three, four and five
Materials, reservoirs and grilles - what the drawing decides about the air
Step three: cleaning and materials, specified on the drawing rather than bought afterwards.

A building either can be cleaned properly or it cannot, and that is decided in the finishes schedule. Specify sealed flooring with coved skirtings rather than open joints at the wall, because an open joint at floor level collects and holds and cannot be cleaned out. Specify wipeable wall finishes to a sensible height in clinical rooms and the corridor, worktops with the fewest possible seams, and handles, edges and junctions that a cloth can actually reach. Put a cleaner's store with a sink and a drain on the plan, because a housekeeping trolley with nowhere to live ends up in the corridor.

And think about the housekeeping product itself at design stage rather than at handover. Surface cleaner, floor cleaner and disinfectant have a strong specific character of their own, and a clinic that has just been cleaned smells of cleaning, which is not the same as smelling clean. When a fragrance and a strongly perfumed cleaner meet, the result belongs to neither of them, and the cheapest fix is nearly always to move to a lightly fragranced or unfragranced cleaner rather than to change anything about the scenting.

Step four: upholstery and flooring, treated as the reservoirs they are.

This is the step most centres under-design, because reservoirs hide their own responsibility. A reservoir takes up what is in the air over hours and gives it back slowly over more hours, so the smell it produces is never near the event that caused it, and nobody blames the chairs.

The chairs are frequently the answer. Fabric seating in a waiting area where people sit with shoes off, a carpeted or porous floor near the shoe-removal point, curtains in a treatment cabin, a fabric couch cover that gets wiped rather than washed - each of these holds and re-releases, and in monsoon each holds moisture as well, which changes everything about how a room behaves in July.

So: minimise fabric in reception rather than maximising comfort, which also happens to suit a clinical aesthetic; specify removable, washable covers wherever you do keep upholstery, and specify them at the moment of ordering rather than hoping later; avoid porous flooring at the shoe-removal point, the fitting bench and the entrance; and put laundering on a written schedule rather than on somebody noticing. Wiping a fabric chair does almost nothing. Laundering it does everything, and it fixes a great many end-of-day smells that owners assume require a machine.

Step five: AC airflow, because where the grilles sit decides where fragrance goes.

Mark every supply and every return grille on the plan and then look at what they connect, because this is the step that determines whether your fragrance-free zones are real.

Four things to check. A supply grille blowing across the reception carries whatever is in that air to wherever it is aimed - useful into the waiting area, unhelpful into a corridor with clinical doors off it. A return grille near the desk pulls fragrance straight out of the volume you are trying to fill, so if the desk reads right and the waiting corner reads of nothing, the fix is placement rather than a second machine. A shared return between a corridor and a treatment room delivers diluted fragrance into a room you marked zero, which is the commonest way a planned neutral zone stops being neutral. And a corridor whose doors are undercut for airflow can behave as a plenum, quietly distributing to everything on it.

The mechanism worth carrying out of this section is the one that makes the whole plan possible: a door that stays shut ends one connected body of air and begins another. Every coverage rating assumes one connected body of air, and a machine cannot push scent through a closed door. That is what turns "scented reception, neutral clinical rooms" from an aspiration into a specification - provided the doors actually stay shut, the undercuts are not enormous, and the returns are not shared in a way that reconnects what the doors separated. Check all three on the drawing while checking costs nothing.

Steps six and seven

Step six: mark the fragrance-free clinical zones on the plan, with a reason beside each.

Do this before you choose a machine, because it is what determines the size of everything that follows. And write the reason, not just the zero, because a zero with a reason survives a change of manager and a zero without one gets quietly overturned by somebody helpful.

Treatment cabins - no fragrance. A patient is reclined, often with a bare foot in a clinician's hands, for twenty to forty minutes. The room is small: 100 sq ft at a 9 ft ceiling is 900 cubic feet, about 25 cubic metres, which is roughly a quarter of a 93 cubic metre reception behind a closed door, and that makes it the fastest-over-scenting volume in the building. The clinician is in that same air for eight to ten hours a day, six days a week, which makes them the most exposed person in the centre.

Procedure and nail-surgery rooms - no fragrance. Instruments and dressings are open.

Casting, orthotics and workshop - no fragrance. Dust, resin and heat want extraction, and a technician stands in it all day.

Gait and assessment - no fragrance. People walk, run and are watched closely at floor level, and footwear is on and off repeatedly.

Physiotherapy gym - no fragrance, and this is the least negotiable of them. People exert themselves here, so the air is changed rather than perfumed, and ventilation is never traded. It is also usually the largest volume in the building: 400 sq ft at a 14 ft ceiling is 5,600 cubic feet, about 159 cubic metres.

Sluice, instrument area, store and WC - not fragrance opportunities. These are extraction, laundry and housekeeping spaces. The WC is treated as a fragrance problem in every business in India and is almost always an extraction problem first: fix the fan, and after that a single reed diffuser from ₹749 is plenty.

Add one more line to the plan while you are there: the accommodation standard. Fragrance-sensitive patients are a standing arrangement rather than a favour - asked at booking rather than negotiated at the door, with "off" as a state anybody on the team can set for a named room without a discussion. A building that is mostly neutral by design makes that a ten-second operation. And the treating clinician's judgement about their own rooms and their own patients overrides every zone on the drawing, in either direction.

Step seven: the scent machine. Volume, socket, position, timer - in that order.

Volume. Size it to the connected volume of the reception, not to the building. A 300 sq ft reception at 11 ft is 3,300 cubic feet, about 93 cubic metres; a 250 sq ft reception at 10 ft is 2,500 cubic feet, about 71; a 150 sq ft one at 10 ft is 1,500 cubic feet, about 42. Against a whole 2,000 sq ft centre at an average 11 ft - 22,000 cubic feet, about 623 cubic metres - you are scenting around fifteen per cent of the air in the building. If the reception is open to a corridor, add the corridor, because a door that stands open is not a door.

Socket. Specify a live socket at the electrical stage in the position the machine should occupy, and mark it on the plan as a diffuser socket so it does not get reassigned to a printer. The Vaayu runs on DC 12V / 1A at 5W and is mains powered, and the ultrasonics need power too; none of them runs on goodwill. A machine with no socket where it belongs ends up on a trailing lead in the corridor, which is how a fifteen-second space connected to every clinical door becomes the room you are dosing.

Position. In the reception volume, out of the direct blast of a supply grille - a diffuser sitting in a cold jet is being fired at a wall rather than filling a room - and away from a return grille, which is a short circuit straight to the plant. Not next to the door to the street. Not on the floor behind furniture. Give it a marked, permanent home and photograph it, because a machine that gets moved during a rearrangement or a clean changes the room overnight while the dial stays where it was.

Timer. Set it to opening hours and nothing else. It does two things at once: the front of house is right when the first patient arrives, and the machine is not quietly running all night into a closed building and greeting Monday morning with a saturated room. Overnight running into a shut clinic is one of the two commonest ways a well-judged level turns into a loud one. The other is the nudge, which is fixed with a card beside the machine recording the register, the setting and the hours.

Then set the level low - lower than feels like it is working - and leave it alone for a fortnight. Judge it from the doorway on a morning the centre has been shut, and remember the pass mark: perceived, not identified. If a patient can name it as a product, come down a notch.

Do it in this order
The design sequence for a podiatry centre, in the order that works
  1. Draw the shoe store first: a door, a vent, and away from both seating and treatment.
  2. Ask if the AC brings in outside air or only recirculates, before the ceiling closes.
  3. Specify sealed, wipeable and launderable finishes, and mark supply and return grilles.
  4. Mark the neutral zones with reasons, then site one socket and one machine at reception.
The SOSA principle
Six of these seven decisions are made on a drawing and cost nothing today. The seventh is a purchase you can make on a Tuesday and move on a Wednesday. Doing them in that order is not a philosophy, it is programme management - and it is why the machine comes last.
The order is fixed because fragrance adds scent and never removes odour. Everything before the machine exists so that there is nothing for the machine to fight. The one scented volume, the register, and the socket that decides it

With the six drawing decisions made, the register is a twenty-minute choice rather than a project - and it should be, because in a building planned this way the register has very little work left to do.

The steer for a foot and ankle centre is narrower than for most commercial spaces and it is a context steer rather than a taste one: clean and unsweet reads right. A heavy or sweet register in a clinical setting reads as covering something, because that is what sweetness sitting over a warm enclosed room usually means in ordinary life. In a restaurant, warmth and sweetness read as generosity; in a room where people are about to take their shoes off, they read as concealment, and the patient's brain reaches that conclusion without ever forming the question.

White Tea Serenity (Westin-inspired) - white tea, aloe, cedar. Clean, weightless, spa-like. The most transparent register in the collection and the one that most reliably gets filed as clean rather than as scented. It agrees with pale walls, white surfaces, daylight and light timber, which is what most new centres are built from, and it has the widest margin before anybody can name it as a product.

Quiet Luxury (Ritz-Carlton-inspired) - white tea, bergamot, cedar. Hushed, polished lobby calm. The same white-tea idea with more finish on it, and the register to run if you want one decision made for you. Unsweet, neutral across a mixed patient list, and it carries a small amount of presence at a threshold without becoming the thing anybody thinks about while they wait.

Forest Suite (1 Hotels-inspired) - cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves. Grounding, biophilic green. The right answer for concrete, dark timber, plants and a sports or performance look. It reads as structural rather than decorative, so a mixed patient list receives it as part of the building rather than as somebody's choice.

The other four, honestly. Tea Garden (jasmine, green tea, white tea) is the best floral option because the jasmine sits inside tea rather than on top of it - a step warmer than the three above, so run it lower. Warm Welcome (citrus, floral, sandalwood) is a genuine threshold register for a practice whose positioning is neighbourhood warmth. Old-World Glamour (amber, violet, woods) is plush and evening-elegant, a beautiful register and the wrong one for a clinical desk. Lobby Bar (citrus, pepper, amber) is bold and after-dark and has essentially no home in a foot-care centre.

What I will not do is rank those seven against each other on measured throw or longevity. SOSA does not publish that comparison, and the variables that dominate - connected volume, ceiling height, ventilation rate, soft furnishing, setting and run hours - are all decided by the six steps above rather than by the blend.

Specify extraction for the WC, sluice, store and shoe cupboard as routine rather than on request. And never reduce ventilation so a fragrance lasts longer - a well-ventilated centre is harder to scent and that is a good problem to have.
3 to 5. Materials, reservoirs and grilles · the drawing Sealed floors with coved skirtings, wipeable walls, few seams, removable washable covers - specified in the finishes schedule, not bought afterwards. Upholstery and porous flooring are reservoirs that hold and slowly re-release, so laundering beats wiping. Then mark every supply and return grille, because a shared return or a big door undercut is how a room you marked neutral stops being neutral.
6 and 7. Zones, then the machine · last and smallest Write the zeros on the plan with a reason beside each - cabins, procedure, casting, gait, gym, sluice - because a zero with a reason survives a change of manager. Then one machine sized to the reception volume, on a specified live socket, out of the supply blast and away from a return, with the timer set to opening hours. Now the seventh decision as a purchase, sized honestly against the arithmetic you have already done.

Your scented volume is the reception alone. A 300 sq ft reception at 11 ft is 3,300 cubic feet, about 93 cubic metres. A 250 sq ft reception and waiting area at 10 ft is 2,500 cubic feet, about 71. A 150 sq ft one at 10 ft is 1,500 cubic feet, about 42. Against a 2,000 sq ft centre at an average 11 ft - 22,000 cubic feet, about 623 cubic metres - that is around fifteen per cent of the air in the building, and it is the number the machine is bought against.

For a single reception an ultrasonic is usually the whole purchase. The SOSA Boond at ₹899 suits a small enclosed desk area of around 42 cubic metres. The SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is the commercial machine and it is worth understanding at design stage even if you do not buy it now, because if your front of house is going to be large, open and genuinely connected it is the right answer and it changes where you put the socket. In a clinical building its defining property is what it does not do: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, so no water, no humidity and no wet residue anywhere near a clinical area. Rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air, with SOSA's own copy also stating 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft scented evenly. If you are designing a large multi-speciality building with a ducted system already, mention it on WhatsApp at the services stage rather than after handover.

Two systems, and they are not interchangeable. The ultrasonics are water-based cool-mist machines; the Vaayu and the ducted machines run waterless nebulising oil, and the Vaayu ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends as one of three bundle choices. The ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into a Vaayu or an HVAC machine. If you expect to grow from an ultrasonic to a Vaayu, or to open a second site later, say so before you buy the first bottles.

And there is a perfectly good answer that involves no machine at all, which is worth stating in a design guide because a new centre often does not need one. The SOSA scenting range

SOSA sells two different systems and one of the commonest mistakes is mixing them up. Size by the connected air volume of the room you are actually scenting - which in a clinic is almost always the reception and waiting area alone - floor area multiplied by ceiling height gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. A door that stays shut ends one volume and begins another.

A foot clinic has a harder job than most places I write about, and it is worth saying plainly: your patients take their shoes and socks off, all day, in rooms that are often small and often air-conditioned with the windows shut. That is a real environment, and no bottle solves it. What solves it is where the shoes go, how the air moves, and what gets cleaned and laundered.

So the order matters more here than anywhere. Find the source. Move the air. Clean the surfaces and the soft things. Only then, in the reception where people wait, add one low register and hold it. Fragrance adds scent - it never subtracts one - and a scent laid over an odour makes a third smell that is usually worse than either.

The other thing I say to every clinician who asks me: the treatment rooms are not the opportunity. A patient lying back with a foot in someone's hands, a room with instruments and dressings in it, a person who has told you they react to fragrance - none of those want an ambient scent, and I would rather lose the second machine than pretend otherwise.
