Second, the air already contains a great deal - ghee, mithai, fried food, marigold, flame and thirty people's own perfumes - and adding a loud register into that produces a blur rather than a signature. Stand in your own hall on Diwali evening and count what is competing. Open flame. Diyas on the threshold, on the parapet, along the stair edge, candles on the console: that is combustion, hot oil or wax, and wick smoke, and a dozen small flames in a closed ground floor is a genuine presence in the air rather than a decorative detail. Two days of kitchen. Diwali cooking does not happen in the two hours before people arrive; it has been running since Dhanteras, and the airborne oil from deep-frying settles into curtains, rugs and sofa fabric and releases itself slowly back into the room for days afterwards. Sweetness. Mithai, ghee, khoya and dry fruit are all sweet, warm and heavy, and they are sitting on the table in open boxes. Flowers. Marigold and tuberose in garlands and at the door are strong and distinctive and are part of the occasion. People. Your house holds more bodies on this evening than on any other night of the year, each one a warm object wearing their own perfume, and the front door opens every few minutes for two hours. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.

Is it safe to run a diffuser in a house full of diyas and candles?
The machine and the flames must be kept well apart, and that is the whole of the safety instruction: never place a diffuser, a reed bottle or any fragrance product near an open diya, lamp or candle. Not on the same console, not on the same shelf, not on the same thali or window ledge, and not where a lamp is likely to be moved later in the evening once the house fills up. Reed diffusers hold liquid oil in an open-necked bottle. Machines sit near power points, and power points on Diwali night often end up on the same table as the lamps and the fairy lights. The house is also fuller and more chaotic than on any other evening of the year, with children moving through it and long sleeves and dupattas near low surfaces. Put your machine in the passage or the hall well away from anything burning, keep reeds off any surface that carries a lamp, and treat flame safety as the first decision rather than an afterthought. The house already smells of ghee and mithai. Should I use a sweet fragrance to match it?
No, and this is the most common Diwali mistake. It feels intuitive to reach for something warm and sweet because the evening is warm and sweet, but sweetness compounds. The mithai is already sweet, the ghee is sweet and heavy, the fried food is rich, and the room is warm and crowded, which amplifies all three. Add a sweet register on top and within an hour you have something cloying in a room that thirty people cannot leave, and cloying is the specific failure that makes guests quietly open a window. Clean and bright is the better direction precisely because it contrasts rather than compounds - it reads as fresh air alongside the food rather than as more of the same. Can I scent the puja room so it smells nice for guests?
Please do not. The puja room has its own incense, agarbatti, camphor and lamp, and those are part of the ritual rather than a room fragrance you are free to improve on. Layering a hotel-inspired register over that is wrong for the room in a straightforward practical sense - two unrelated fragrance directions in one small space read as confusion rather than richness - and it is disrespectful to what the space is for, which matters more. It is also the single most common place a well-meaning host puts a diffuser, usually because it is the room they most want to feel special. The better instinct is to let it be what it is, and to make sure nothing you are running elsewhere leaks into it, which in practice means keeping your machine in the connected volume of entrance, living and passage rather than near the puja space, and keeping the register clean and quiet so the doorway between the two is not a collision. And keep every fragrance product well away from the lamp burning in there.
How far ahead should I start on Diwali night?
Earlier than you would for an ordinary evening, because you are filling more air and losing more of it. On a normal Saturday, an hour or two ahead is a sensible starting point for a connected ground floor. On Diwali the door opens far more often, the terrace door is propped for the diyas, the house is warmer and the volume you are trying to hold is usually the whole ground floor rather than one room, so give it a longer head start and let the reservoir build. The practical version: put it in the timer for the middle of the afternoon, before the cooking reaches its loudest point and long before anybody is due, and then forget about it. Do not compensate for a late start by raising the intensity, because that gives you a strong pocket near the machine and thin air at the far end at exactly the moment the first family walks in with completely fresh noses. Somebody at the party said the house smells strong. What do I do?
Turn it down or off in that part of the house straight away, open something, and do not let the person feel awkward for having said it. Almost nobody mentions this once, let alone twice, so the fact that somebody did means the level is well past where you think it is. You are the last person in the room who can judge it: you have been home all day cooking, and your nose stopped reporting on your own house hours ago. A Diwali gathering is also the least forgiving crowd for this - it includes pregnant women, elderly relatives, small children and at least one person prone to migraine, none of whom chose your fragrance and none of whom can leave the room. Treat the report as information rather than as a difference of opinion, make the reduction permanent rather than a one-off for that evening, and check the setting again on an ordinary day.
