There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Should I use a stronger fragrance because the card party goes on so long?
The opposite, and this is the single most common mistake at a card night. A long evening is an argument for a lower level, not a higher one, for two reasons that both come from the same fact. Your guests are seated in one room for four to eight hours, so whatever you set is what they breathe for the whole night with no option to move away from it, and a level that is merely a little too much at nine has become genuinely unpleasant by one in the morning. And every nose in the room, including yours, stops registering a constant smell within minutes, so a higher setting does not buy you a fragrance that people keep noticing - it buys you a room that is heavier than you think it is, which the next person through the front door will walk straight into. Set the level before anyone arrives, set it below your ordinary weekday setting because a warm room with people in it carries scent further, and then leave the dial alone. If you want the fragrance to be noticed, the place to spend it is the entrance, where noses are fresh.
Where should I put the machine if the card tables are in the living room?
Not near the tables. Put it in the connected volume but away from where people sit for hours - the passage, the hall, near the stair base or on a console at the far end of the living room - so that the card room receives the settled tail of the fragrance rather than sitting inside its working range. Three placement rules matter here. Keep it low, because scent carried on cold air and warmed by a room full of people rises on its own and a stairwell will pull it upward. Keep it out of the direct draught of a split air-conditioner, which will otherwise blow a concentrated stream across one table and leave the rest of the room thin. And keep it well away from every diya, lamp and candle in the house, which on Diwali usually means checking the console and the window ledges before you decide. Is a reed diffuser enough for a card party, or do I need a machine?
It depends entirely on whether you are scenting a room or a house. If your card evening happens in one enclosed room and guests barely leave it, a reed from Rs 749 at the door of that room and another in the washroom is a genuinely sufficient answer, and we would rather say that than sell you hardware. A reed needs no power, makes no noise, has nothing to top up during the evening and lasts about six to ten weeks, which is exactly the profile you want on a night when you are busy with chai and the score sheet. Where a reed cannot help is the whole connected volume of a larger home, because a passive diffuser scents the air immediately around it rather than a ground floor. Can I scent the room where the cards are being played at all?
Yes, gently, and as part of the same body of air rather than as its own project. In most Indian homes the card tables are set up in the living room, which is connected to the entrance and the passage with no doors between them, so it is one volume and one register whether you plan it that way or not. What you are choosing is the level, and the level should be set for the person who will still be sitting there at one in the morning. In practice that means noticeably lower than you would run the same house on an ordinary evening. If the card room genuinely closes - a study, a den, a converted bedroom - then it is a separate air problem and a machine in the hall will not reach it, so give it a reed from Rs 749 in the same fragrance family, or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 run only before people sit down. And keep any of it away from the lamps.
One of the players said the room smells strong. What should I do?
Turn it down or off straight away, open the balcony door for a few minutes, and do not let the person feel awkward for saying it. At a card party this report is worth more than at any other kind of gathering, because it is much harder to make: the person is seated with people they will keep seeing for the rest of the night, they cannot leave the room, and they have already been adapting to the smell for an hour or more, which means the level has to be well past comfortable for it to still be registering. Assume it is worse than they said. You are the least reliable judge in the house because you have been in it all day. An Indian card evening also includes elderly relatives, pregnant family members and at least one person prone to migraine, none of whom chose the fragrance and none of whom can move away from it, so anybody reporting a headache is a recalibration signal rather than a difference of opinion. Make the reduction permanent, and check the setting again on an ordinary day. Ventilation and cleaning come first, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims for home fragrance.
