How do I convert square feet to cubic metres for scenting? Floor area in square feet multiplied by ceiling height in feet gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. A worked example: 900 sq ft of connected space at a 10 ft ceiling is 9,000 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 255 cubic metres. If part of that space is double height, count it separately at its real height: 420 sq ft at 20 ft is 8,400 cubic feet, about 238 cubic metres on its own. Add the parts together. Do this only for the connected space - every room whose door is normally shut is a separate sealed volume that a machine cannot reach, and including it in the total is the most common sizing error.

Subtracting the rooms that stay shut
This is the step that changes the answer most, and almost nobody does it. Machines are rated in cubic metres of connected air, so before converting anything you have to decide which parts of your house are genuinely one body of air. The test is physical rather than theoretical: walk from your front door along the route a guest takes and note every handle you turn. In a typical villa what you pass through freely is the entrance, the living room, the dining, the passage joining them, the stair footprint and - if the stair is open - the landing above. Everything else is a sealed volume: bedrooms, attached bathrooms, the study, the puja room, usually the kitchen and utility. Those rooms are not part of the load, because no machine can reach them, and including them inflates your number and pushes you towards a bigger purchase than the house needs. In practice, subtracting them typically halves the figure: a 3,000 sq ft villa that converts to about 850m³ on paper commonly has 1,100 to 1,500 sq ft of connected space, about 311 to 425m³.
Tip: if you did not turn a handle to get there, it counts. If you did, it is a Rs 749 problem instead.

Step you get wrong
Counting height honestly, including the tall bit
Square footage hides ceilings, and ceilings are where villas differ most from flats. The conversion is simple: floor area multiplied by ceiling height gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. What trips people up is a house with more than one height in it. Do not average - split the calculation. A worked example: your connected space is 900 sq ft, of which the living room is 420 sq ft at a double-height 20 ft and the remaining 480 sq ft is at 10 ft. That is 480 x 10 = 4,800 cubic feet plus 420 x 20 = 8,400 cubic feet, which is 13,200 cubic feet in total, about 374m³. Notice what happened: the double-height living room is less than half the floor area and nearly two-thirds of the volume. Then add the open landing above the stair if you have one - 150 sq ft at 10 ft is 1,500 cubic feet, about 42m³ - for a final figure of about 416m³. Every one of those numbers is arithmetic you can check with a phone calculator, which is the point.

Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. Frequently asked questions
What if my ceilings are 11 or 12 feet rather than 10?
Use your real height, because the arithmetic is proportional and it matters. At 11 ft, 2,000 sq ft is 22,000 cubic feet, about 623 cubic metres; at 12 ft the same plan is 24,000 cubic feet, about 680 cubic metres, against about 566 at 10 ft. On the connected portion the effect is smaller in absolute terms but the same in principle: 900 sq ft of connected space is 9,000 cubic feet or about 255 cubic metres at 10 ft, 9,900 cubic feet or about 280 cubic metres at 11 ft, and 10,800 cubic feet or about 306 cubic metres at 12 ft. None of those changes the recommendation for a typical villa, which is why 10 ft is a useful shorthand for the tables. Where height genuinely changes the answer is a double-height feature, which you should always calculate separately at its real height rather than averaging it into the rest.
Do I include the kitchen in the connected volume?
Only if it genuinely shares air with the living space and you actually want it scented, and be careful with both halves of that. A closed kitchen with a door is a separate volume and does not count. An open kitchen that flows into the dining does count in the arithmetic, but it is worth deciding deliberately whether you want fragrance there: cooking smells and an ambient register competing in the same air is the fastest way to make a house smell confused, and the correct order is always exhaust and ventilation first. Many owners of open-plan homes site the machine at the entrance end deliberately, so the kitchen sits at the far edge of the volume rather than at its centre. And at the table during a meal, food should be the strongest thing in the air, which is a scheduling decision rather than a machine one.
Should I size for the whole ground floor or just where guests go?
Size for the air, then choose the placement for the guests. Those are two different decisions and conflating them is a common error. The arithmetic has to cover the whole connected volume, because that is what the machine will fill whether you intended it or not - air does not respect your priorities. But the placement should favour the moments you care about, which usually means siting the unit near where the entrance opens into the living area so the arrival moment is the strongest one in the house. If part of your connected space is a utility passage or a rarely used formal room, it will still be scented, just more faintly the further it is from the unit, and that is fine. What you should not do is size for half the volume and hope, because that is how a machine ends up running harder than it should.
How accurate does the measuring have to be?
Approximate is genuinely fine, because the decision points are far apart. The gap between a Megh at Rs 3,499 and a Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is a difference of several hundred cubic metres, not twenty, so being out by ten per cent will not change your answer. Pace out the rooms rather than measuring every alcove, use the height of the standard part of the house, count any double-height area separately, and round up rather than down. Does this method work for machines from other brands?
Yes, and that is deliberate - the arithmetic belongs to physics rather than to us. Any coverage figure quoted in cubic metres describes one connected body of air, so the method of measuring connected space, applying real ceiling heights, converting to cubic metres and subtracting every room that stays shut applies to whatever you are comparing. The two things to watch when comparing brands are units and honesty about doors: a claim in square feet is hiding your ceiling height, so ask what ceiling it assumes, and a claim that a single standalone unit will scent an entire multi-room house is ignoring the closed-door limit that applies to every machine ever made.
