What we answer
"Property with stone, wood, courtyards and a smell it has had for decades."
Record what it already smells of before adding anything, and protect that first
Existing character
What we answer
"Owner asks for a scent that says Rajasthan."
No. A costume scent dates faster than the building and reads as theatre

What we specify
"Semi-open corridors and courtyards the owner wants scented."
Nothing. Air that leaves the space cannot hold fragrance at any setting
Open volumes
What we specify
"Reception, enclosed lounge and a corridor that is effectively outdoors."
Machines only in the enclosed volumes; the rest is left alone deliberately
Zoning
What we specify
"Lobby beside a courtyard with doors open all day."
Place deep, set from the doorway, and accept a shorter reach than the plan suggests

What we answer
"Property that is beautiful and slightly musty in one wing."

A courtyard property is a machine for moving air, which is exactly why it is comfortable in June and exactly why fragrance behaves unpredictably in half of it.
Quick answers — read this first
How does a courtyard change scenting? A courtyard drives air movement that varies through the day, so rooms opening onto it experience changing ventilation rates. Fully enclosed rooms behave normally; half-open rooms cannot be held at a stable level and are usually left unscented.

Should the setting be raised when the courtyard is moving air? No. Raising output to chase moving air spends fragrance without holding a level, and it leaves the room over-scented when the air settles. Use timers matched to when a room is occupied instead.

What is the practical specification? Machines only in rooms that can be closed, running on a timer that matches occupancy rather than continuously. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 has app and timer control for exactly this, on fragrance from ₹299.
The short answer
Short answer: Scent only the rooms that close. Use the timer to match occupancy, and never raise output to chase moving air.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for one fully enclosed public room up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume, the Aangan at ₹25,999 for a large enclosed hall, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Semi-open areas are specified as nothing at all.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with which of your areas are fully enclosed, their ceiling heights, whether doors stay open, and what the property already smells of - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
How should a courtyard hotel handle scenting when airflow changes through the day?
By scenting only what closes, and by using time rather than output as the control. A courtyard building works by stack effect: the courtyard heats through the day, air rises out of it, and cooler air is drawn through the surrounding rooms and arcades to replace it, with the direction and rate changing between early morning, midday, evening and night. That is the reason these buildings are pleasant in a Jaipur summer, and it is also the reason fragrance behaves oddly in the rooms that open onto them. A half-open room is being continuously flushed at a rate you do not control and cannot predict from hour to hour, so no fixed setting produces a stable level there: it is faint at noon and abruptly noticeable at eleven at night when the air stills. The wrong response is to raise the output, which spends fragrance into moving air during the day and leaves the room too strong when the air settles. The right response has two parts. First, restrict machines to rooms that can actually be closed - an enclosed reception, a lounge with doors, a bar, a library - and specify nothing for the courtyard, the arcades and the rooms that open directly onto them. Second, run those machines on a timer matched to when the room is used rather than continuously: on before the room fills, off when it empties, which in most heritage properties means a few hours around arrival and a few in the evening rather than eighteen hours a day. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per enclosed volume with app and timer control, Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. SOSA makes no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend and is not affiliated with any hotel brand. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: control with the timer, not the dial, and leave the half-open rooms alone.
Timer control is the feature that matters in a courtyard property: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, scheduled to the hours the room is actually used, fragrance from ₹299.

The daily cycle a courtyard building runs on

It helps to think about the building as a ventilation system that happens to be beautiful, because that is what it is.

Why this works
Working with the cycle
1 Identify which rooms can genuinely be closed off from the courtyard 2 Specify nothing for the courtyard, arcades and rooms open to them 3 Run the enclosed rooms on a timer matched to occupancy hours 4 Never raise output to compensate for air movement
The machine most Jaipur heritage properties use, and only in their enclosed rooms: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot drift. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Why the level will not sit still
The ventilation rate is not constant
A room being flushed with courtyard air at a rate that changes four times a day cannot hold a steady perceived level from a fixed output, which is not a machine fault but arithmetic. What owners experience is a room that seems weak all afternoon and then unexpectedly strong at night, followed by a cycle of adjustment that never converges. The fix is to stop trying to hold a level in a room that is being ventilated by the building.
Tip: You are trying to fill a bucket that empties at a different rate every hour.
02
Timer beats dial
Presence, not continuity
Scenting an enclosed lounge for the four hours it is used is a better result than scenting it faintly for eighteen, and it costs considerably less in refills. Set the machine to come on shortly before guests arrive in the space and stop when it empties, so the level is right when there is somebody there to experience it, and the room gets to be an ordinary room for the rest of the day.
03
The rooms that close
Doors are the whole specification
In practice the audit is simple: walk the property and note which rooms have doors that are actually shut during use. Those are your candidates, and they are usually reception, one lounge and possibly a bar or dining room, which in a large heritage property may be three machines rather than the ten an area-based calculation would suggest. Everything without a door is left alone, deliberately and permanently.
Tip: If the door is never shut, it is not a room for this purpose.
The SOSA principle
The courtyard is the reason the building is comfortable and the reason half of it cannot hold a scent.
Both facts come from the same physics, and only one of them is negotiable.

Timers, not higher settings

Where the enclosed rooms do carry a register, keep it identical across all of them, so that a guest crossing an unscented courtyard between two scented rooms experiences continuity rather than a change of subject.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for heritage properties: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning, damp remediation or source control. On an old building the correct first step is to identify what each area already smells of and to protect or repair that; a scent laid over damp, drains or deteriorating textiles is a cover-up and is not recommended. Fragrance introduced into a semi-open or outdoor volume is carried away by air that does not stay in the space, so it is spent rather than used. This is a physical limit and not a machine limit: no output setting makes an open courtyard hold a scent. Guest preference is personal and a hotel is a crowd environment, so restrained registers are recommended and unscented areas should be available. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. A note from Sonal

Jaipur is the one city where my first answer is often that the property needs less than the owner thinks. A haveli or a palace hotel arrives with a smell it has earned - old stone that holds cool, wood, lime plaster, the courtyard after it has been watered, whatever grows in it. Guests are paying for exactly that, and it is very easy to spend eleven thousand rupees covering it up.

So the sequence I use here is backwards from everywhere else. Walk the property at seven in the morning and write down what each area already smells of. Protect the ones that are lovely. Fix the ones that are not, at the source, because damp and drains and old textiles are not a fragrance problem. Only then look at the two or three fully enclosed rooms where a low background would genuinely help, which is usually reception and an indoor lounge, and almost never a corridor open to a courtyard.

The honest limits. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand, and I make no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend. If you run a heritage property in Jaipur and want to know which rooms are worth scenting and which are not, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. Frequently asked questions

How does a courtyard affect scenting?
It drives air movement that changes through the day, so rooms opening onto it are continuously flushed at a varying rate and cannot hold a stable level from a fixed setting.
Should I raise the setting when air is moving?
No. That spends fragrance into moving air during the day and leaves the room too strong when the air stills at night. Use the timer instead.
Which rooms should have machines?
Only rooms that can genuinely be closed during use - typically an enclosed reception, a lounge with doors, a bar or a library.
How should the timer be set?
On shortly before the room is occupied and off when it empties, which in most heritage properties means a few hours around arrival and a few in the evening.
Can anything be done for the courtyard itself?
Not with ambient scenting. Air that leaves the space cannot hold fragrance at any output. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 for a room-by-room plan.
