Why does the top floor matter? More glass, more roof and more direct sun mean a warmer interior through the afternoon, which changes how a composition reads.
What is the product for a penthouse? The SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 where the interior is over roughly 2,000 sq ft, or reed diffusers from Rs 749 placed away from the terrace doors.
A top floor is warmer, and warmth pushes heavy notes forward
Anybody who has lived on a top floor in India knows the fact this page is built on, even if they have never connected it to fragrance. A penthouse takes more heat than the flats below it. There is usually more glass, because the view is the reason it was bought. There is roof directly overhead rather than another apartment. And there is more direct sun on more sides, for more of the day. The interior is often perfectly comfortable because the air conditioning handles it, but the surfaces, the glass and the air near them run warmer through the afternoon than they would three floors down. That has a consequence for scent, and it is the same one this shop writes about for cars, in a much gentler form. Warmth accelerates the loss of light volatile material and pushes the heavy, sweet and resinous parts of a composition forward. In a car at fifty degrees the effect is dramatic and it is why sweet registers fail there. In a warm top-floor living room it is not dramatic, but it is real: a composition that reads as balanced in a cool shaded flat reads slightly heavier and sweeter in a glass-walled room at four in the afternoon. So the practical guidance for a penthouse is to lean towards the cleaner and cooler end. In the hotel-inspired set that ships with the Vaayu, that means the registers built around white tea, cedar, aloe, green leaves and citrus - Quiet Luxury with white tea, bergamot and cedar; White Tea Serenity with white tea, aloe and cedar; Forest Suite with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves; Tea Garden with jasmine, green tea and white tea - rather than the warmest of them, Old-World Glamour with amber, violet and woods, or Lobby Bar with citrus, pepper and amber, which are better in cooler months or in an internal room. The machine ships with four one hundred millilitre oils in one of three curated combos and the owner picks the combo at the point of purchase, so this is a reason to mention the consideration rather than to decide for them. And a note worth making plainly: these are SOSA's own interpretations of that style of scenting, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. For reed diffusers the same principle applies with an extra placement point. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres or one thousand three hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Himalayan pine with sage and cedar and is the driest of the five registers, which makes it the best choice for a warm, bright room. Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, the cleanest. Evening Calm and Garden Bloom at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine - lavender with chamomile, and British rose with night-blooming jasmine - suit bedrooms and internal rooms better than a glass-walled living space. Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine, Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, is the warmest and belongs in a cooler room or a cooler month. The placement point is specific to penthouses: keep bottles away from the terrace doors and away from direct sun on a glass table, because both accelerate evaporation unevenly and empty a bottle faster than it should go. On the product decision itself, the penthouse case is straightforward. If the interior is over roughly two thousand square feet - and many penthouses are, particularly with a double-height living space or a mezzanine, which adds cubic volume faster than floor area suggests - the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the correct scale, covering up to a thousand cubic metres on waterless cold-air nebulisation. It is worth knowing that waterless matters here: a top-floor home in a coastal or humid city, with a lot of glass, is the last place anybody wants a steam or ultrasonic diffuser putting moisture into the air, and a dry nano-mist leaves no film on glass either. It runs under thirty-eight decibels, has a four hundred millilitre tank lasting weeks, is scheduled from a Bluetooth app or the onboard buttons with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows and adjustable intensity, weighs nine hundred grams, and lies flat or mounts on a wall. Refills afterwards are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, not the water-based Hotel Collection, which is a separate system for ultrasonic machines. Two honest limits for a penthouse specifically. The terrace cannot be scented by anything in this range, and nothing here is an outdoor product - an open-air space is an unbounded volume and no fragrance holds in it. And when the terrace doors are open, which in a penthouse is often, the interior behaves as an open space too, which is why the scheduling matters as much as the register: run it for the hours the doors are shut. In a brand-new penthouse, leave a machine off for the first few weeks while paint, varnish and polish air out, which on a top floor with large openings usually happens faster than elsewhere. Fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix.
The same physics as a hot car, milder - so choose the cooler registers

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
