Why is a machine wrong for a weekend home? Because a scheduled system scents an empty house, and the real issue in an occasionally used house is staleness from being shut, which needs air.
What does a weekend home actually need? An arrival routine - open everything for twenty minutes, run fans, then scent the rooms being used.
Ask how many nights a week somebody sleeps there
The question that decides this gift is not how large the villa is. It is how many nights a week somebody sleeps in it. A villa here may be a family's only home, in which case the reasoning is the same as anywhere - size, layout, airflow. But a good number are second homes: bought by a family living in a bigger city, used at weekends and holidays, intended as a retirement house in a few years, and looked after by a caretaker who comes in to sweep and water the garden in between. That is a fundamentally different scenting problem, and treating it like a full-time home wastes both money and the gift. Consider what a scheduled machine does in an occasionally used house. It runs on its programme - one, four, eight or twenty-four hour windows, day selection - and it does so whether or not anybody is there. A house occupied six nights a month gets fragrance on the other twenty-four for nobody's benefit, consuming oil that costs one thousand and forty-nine rupees per hundred grams. Somebody will eventually notice and switch it off, at which point the machine is an object on a shelf. It can of course be turned on when the family arrives, but then its central advantage - continuous even coverage without anybody thinking about it - has been replaced by a manual action, and a bottle does manual-free coverage better. The second problem is more important, and it is the real one in a house that stands closed. A building shut for three weeks, even in a mild climate, develops the flat staleness of still air: settled dust, textiles releasing what they have absorbed, a kitchen with nothing moving through it, bathrooms whose floor drains have partly evaporated and are letting sewer air in, and in the monsoon a damp patch that nobody was there to notice. What that house needs on arrival is not fragrance. It is twenty minutes of every window and door open, fans running, the wardrobes and cupboards opened, water poured down every floor drain, and the kitchen exhaust on. That routine - which costs nothing and takes one person twenty minutes - transforms an occasionally used house, and fragrance layered over a closed-up smell simply smells of both. Saying that plainly is part of giving a useful gift. So for a second home the right present is bottles, and they suit it unusually well for three reasons. They need no electricity, which matters in a house where the power may be switched off at the mains between visits. They keep working unattended, so a diffuser placed in a hallway continues quietly evaporating for weeks and the house smells like somebody's home when the door opens rather than like a shut building. And they need no schedule, no app and no explanation to a caretaker. Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and is the best single choice for a house that stands closed, because clean is exactly what a shut house does not smell of. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry and resinous, good in a house with wooden furniture. Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine is lavender with chamomile for a bedroom, Garden Bloom at the same is British rose with night-blooming jasmine, and Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla. A duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees is the version to give: one for the hallway and one for the main bedroom covers the two places that matter on arrival. And a three hundred millilitre refill at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a good follow-up gift, because in a second home bottles are the one consumable that keeps earning its place. If the villa is a full-time home of roughly two thousand square feet or more with a connected ground floor, then the machine is the right gift and the usual reasoning applies. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist carried by the air the house is already moving, producing one even field rather than pockets, reaching the entrance, hallway, stairwell and landing that no bottle can serve. No water, no heat, no dampness, no oily film. Four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. One, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows with day selection and adjustable intensity from a Bluetooth app or its onboard buttons. Under thirty-eight decibels, five watts, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or mounted on a wall or an HVAC return, auto-stop and key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included so it runs the first evening, and refills of waterless nebuliser oil from one thousand and forty-nine rupees - never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. In a house lived in with the windows open for much of the day, schedule it for the closed evening hours rather than continuously, and place it in the main circulation rather than near a garden door. Three closing notes. Bedrooms behind closed doors are outside a machine's field, so a bottle belongs in the main bedroom either way. A garden, veranda or sit-out cannot be scented at all, since outdoor air is unbounded; a candle from six hundred and ninety-nine rupees works within a metre or so of where people are sitting, sheltered and never unattended. And where a smell has a cause - a shut house, a damp wall, a dry drain trap - fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
Because a house used at weekends wants the opposite of a scheduled system
One question first, and the answer is often the cheaper one.
| Scent | Why it suits the mood |
|---|---|
| Full-time home over ~2,000 sq ft · Vaayu ₹11,999 | Connected ground floor, entrance, stairwell and landing. Scheduled for the closed hours. |
| Weekend or holiday home · reeds ₹749 to ₹1,349 | No power, no schedule, and still working when the door opens after three weeks. |

| Follow-up gift · refill ₹2,399 | In a second home, bottles are the consumable that keeps earning its place. |

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
