Should I mention what it cost us? No. A congratulation that mentions your side of it stops being a congratulation. Say it another time if it needs saying; the note is entirely about them.
What should the note say? The part only you saw - the specific bad stretch, the evening they nearly gave up, the fact that they kept going. Nobody at the ceremony knows any of that.
You paid part of the price, and the note should not say so
Begin with the thing that makes this different from every other version of this gift. Everybody else congratulating your partner is responding to an outcome they learned about after it happened. You watched the whole process, in real time, from inside the house. You know which months were bad. You know the evening they said out loud that it was not going to work. You know what they were like in the week before the shortlist was announced, and you know how much of the last two years went into this rather than into anything else. That is an enormous informational advantage and it is worth spending carefully, because there is one way to spend it badly. The bad version is a note that includes your side of the ledger. Even gently - we got through it, it was hard on both of us, I am glad the evenings are over. Every one of those sentences is true and none of them belongs in a congratulation, because the moment a note mentions the cost to the giver, the recipient has to respond to that instead of receiving the thing. It converts a gift into an accounting, and the recipient will notice even if they say nothing. If there is something that needs saying about how the last two years went for you, it is a real conversation and it deserves its own evening, separate from this one. The congratulation is entirely about them. So what goes in it instead is the part only you saw, framed as observation rather than sacrifice. Name the specific stretch when it looked like it would not work. Name the evening they nearly stopped and did not. Name the thing they did that nobody in that awards room will ever know about - the version they scrapped, the extra six months, the fact that they kept the standard when it would have been much easier not to. Three or four sentences of that, written down rather than said, and it will outlast the trophy. People are consistently surprised that somebody retained the difficult part rather than the successful part. Now the object, and the first rule is the same as for any award: do not give a second commemorative thing. The trophy already exists and is extremely good at announcing the occasion. Anything else that does the same job competes with it and adds to the display obligation - objects that mark events cannot be moved to a cupboard or given away without a small disloyalty. Your gift should be private, used, and finished when it is finished. There is also a nice practical reason for a partner specifically: a worn fragrance is one of the very few gifts you are better placed to choose than anybody else in their life, because you actually know what they like and what they have worn for years. Use that. On timing, an award produces an unusually compressed wave - the ceremony, the photographs, two days of messages, then a hard stop by about day four - and awards are unusually flat afterwards, because unlike a house or a business there is nothing to do next. The thing is over. A gift given two or three weeks later, on an ordinary evening, lands in exactly that gap and is the only thing in the room. If you gave something on the night as well, that is fine; the second one is the one that does the work. Now the objects. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the strongest fit here, because the public half of this achievement has been handled thoroughly and what is missing is something private. An attar is twelve millilitres of undiluted perfume oil in a glass roll-on with no alcohol carrier, which means it does not spray or project - it opens quietly and stays within roughly an arm's length, worn for the wearer rather than announced to a room. Adaa at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk. Ameeri at three hundred and eighty-five is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood. Mastani at three hundred and eighty-nine is night jasmine and Damask rose. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine is a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate, which is worth saying plainly. If they are particular about what they wear - and a partner always knows - the Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees hands the choice over. One thought worth considering: if you want the fragrance to become attached to this period specifically, choose something they do not already own, because a repeat of their everyday scent folds into the years they have already spent wearing it. People very commonly report that a scent used during a particular stretch brings that stretch back later, which is a widely reported experience rather than a claim this shop is making about anybody's memory, and no mechanism is asserted. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees is the better fit where the award recognises years rather than one piece of work, because it is the format that gets carried through something rather than displayed after it: fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, applied with a finger, spill-proof, no cap to lose, six to eight hours, surviving months in a bag. Sway at four hundred and fifty-nine is dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, red patchouli and vanilla husk. Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk. Velour at four hundred and seventy-nine is vanilla bean, butter biscuit, toasted almond and whipped cream. Siren at four hundred and eighty-nine is black cherry, espresso, warm vanilla and cedar smoke. Titan at five hundred is Arabica coffee, roasted wood, black pepper, frankincense and leather. Beast at five hundred and forty-nine is smoked whiskey, roasted coffee, spicy leather, amber resin and vanilla bark. A reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees is a good choice where the work happened at home - a study, a desk in a corner, the room where all those evenings were spent - because it changes the character of the space the effort took place in. A minute to set up, then nothing at all, running two to three months with no flame, no socket and no switch. Morning Freshness is seven hundred and forty-nine, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm seven hundred and ninety-nine, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew eight hundred and forty-nine. Reeds use their own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action, which is a separate system - reed oil never goes into a machine, and the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees is ultrasonic-only at three to six drops per tank. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is the simple version and is entirely sufficient with the right note: lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in small batches in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours, in Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Evening Walks or Cozy Corner. One final practical note: if the award was received in a professional capacity, your partner may be covered by an employer gift policy - though a gift between spouses is a different matter from a gift from a colleague or a client, and the policies that matter are the ones governing what they accept from work-related parties. If in doubt they will know; their employer's policy governs, and nothing here is legal or compliance advice.

Versailles
There is a pattern I noticed years before we sold anything, and it is the reason this section exists. Somebody achieves something that took them years - the flat, the first car bought outright, the manuscript finished at last - and for about forty-eight hours the phone does not stop. Then it stops completely. The achievement took three years; the celebrating took a weekend, and then everybody went back to their own lives, which is not unkind, it is just how attention works.
Which means a gift arriving in week two or three lands in an empty field. That is the single most useful thing on any of these pages and it costs nothing. The second is that a congratulations gift is not repaying anything: nobody owes anybody here, so there is no ledger to balance and no risk of over-gifting into an obligation. You are free to be as generous as the relationship allows. And write the note about what they did, not about how you feel - name the four years, the thing they gave up, the draft they rewrote eleven times.
Two honest things. If somebody has just bought a new car, do not buy them something to cover the smell of it - most new owners like it, it fades on its own, and a fragrance is better introduced a few weeks later in a restrained register. And if somebody has bought a new home, size the gift to the home: our Vaayu is a waterless nebuliser built for spaces of roughly a thousand cubic metres, which is a hotel lobby rather than a three-bedroom flat, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with what they achieved and what their place is like, and we will say honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
