What can a friend say that others cannot? That you noticed what they gave up - four months of declining things - and that you are glad to have them back. Nobody else will mention the cost.
Should I buy running gear? No. Runners choose their own kit after months of testing, so anything from that category is likely to be a duplicate or worse.
You are the person who got cancelled on
Here is the thing friends know that nobody else does. Training for a first marathon is not only an activity, it is a withdrawal. For four months your friend has been saying no: to Friday nights, to late dinners, to weekends away, to the second drink, to anything that starts after nine. Sunday mornings disappeared entirely. Plans were rearranged around a schedule that could not move, and a certain amount of social life quietly went dormant. Everybody involved understood and nobody minded much, which is exactly why nobody ever mentions it - and it means that on the other side of the race, the cost of the last four months goes entirely unacknowledged by everybody, including the person who paid most of it. You are in a position to say two things nobody else will. The first is that you noticed what it took: not the race, which everybody saw, but the declining, the discipline and the fact that they kept to it for four months when nothing would have happened if they had not. The second is simpler and lands harder than people expect: that it is good to have them back. Said warmly rather than pointedly, that is a genuinely nice thing to hear, because most runners are slightly aware of having been absent and nobody has told them it mattered. A word on what not to say. Do not ask their time unless they bring it up. First marathons produce a wide range of finishing times, plenty of people have a day that goes worse than they hoped, and the time is the one number they may be least happy about. And do not ask whether they are doing another one. That is a genuine question in some cases and an exhausting one in most, particularly in the first fortnight when the honest answer is no and they feel they are supposed to say yes. On what not to give: running kit, firmly. Runners spend months working out what suits their own feet, body and route, and anything from that category is likely to be a duplicate or worse than what they chose. And nothing that claims to help with recovery, soreness, sleep or performance - this shop sells fragrance, nothing here does anything of that kind, and no such claim is made anywhere on this page. Pain or injury belongs with a doctor or a physiotherapist. On timing, the usual rule applies with a friend-specific bonus. Congratulations arrive in a compressed burst after the race and stop within about forty-eight hours, and a flat stretch afterwards is very commonly reported by people who do endurance events - the thing that organised four months has finished and nothing has replaced it, which is a description of a common experience rather than a medical claim. Two or three weeks later is therefore the right window. It is also, conveniently, about the point at which normal social life resumes - so a gift and a proper evening out land at the same time, which is a better combination than either alone. Now the objects. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees is the best fit because it matches the shape of what they actually did: it is the format that gets carried through something rather than displayed after it. Fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, applied with a finger, spill-proof, no cap to lose, six to eight hours, surviving months in a bag. Sway at four hundred and fifty-nine, Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine, Velour at four hundred and seventy-nine, Siren at four hundred and eighty-nine, Titan at five hundred, Beast at five hundred and forty-nine. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the more personal option: twelve millilitres of undiluted perfume oil in a glass roll-on with no alcohol carrier, which opens quietly and stays within roughly an arm's length rather than filling a room. Adaa is three hundred and seventy-nine, Ameeri three hundred and eighty-five, Mastani three hundred and eighty-nine, Nawaab three hundred and ninety-nine - the last a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. The Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees hands the choice over where you do not know their taste. Something new to them rather than a repeat is worth choosing if you want it attached to this period; people very commonly report a scent bringing back a stretch of life years later, which is a widely reported experience rather than a mechanism this shop claims. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is the simple choice and works particularly well as half of a two-part gift with an evening out: lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in small batches in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours, in Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Evening Walks or Cozy Corner. Two at seven hundred and fifty-eight rupees with a written note is a complete gift rather than a token. Wax melts at four hundred and seventy-four rupees need a ceramic burner at five hundred and sixty-nine, so give both or neither. A reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees suits a home that has had four months of kit drying in it - though the honest sequence is wash the kit, air the place, and then add fragrance to a clean room rather than over it. A minute to set up, then nothing at all, two to three months with no flame, no socket and no switch. Reeds use their own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action; reed oil never goes into a machine, and the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees is ultrasonic-only at three to six drops per tank.
A gift that also marks getting them back
For the training, and for the fact that they are available again.

Versailles
There is a pattern I noticed years before we sold anything, and it is the reason this section exists. Somebody achieves something that took them years - the flat, the first car bought outright, the manuscript finished at last - and for about forty-eight hours the phone does not stop. Then it stops completely. The achievement took three years; the celebrating took a weekend, and then everybody went back to their own lives, which is not unkind, it is just how attention works.
Which means a gift arriving in week two or three lands in an empty field. That is the single most useful thing on any of these pages and it costs nothing. The second is that a congratulations gift is not repaying anything: nobody owes anybody here, so there is no ledger to balance and no risk of over-gifting into an obligation. You are free to be as generous as the relationship allows. And write the note about what they did, not about how you feel - name the four years, the thing they gave up, the draft they rewrote eleven times.
Two honest things. If somebody has just bought a new car, do not buy them something to cover the smell of it - most new owners like it, it fades on its own, and a fragrance is better introduced a few weeks later in a restrained register. And if somebody has bought a new home, size the gift to the home: our Vaayu is a waterless nebuliser built for spaces of roughly a thousand cubic metres, which is a hotel lobby rather than a three-bedroom flat, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with what they achieved and what their place is like, and we will say honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
