Should I ask what is going on first? You can ask, but do not make the gift conditional on the answer. Some people will tell you and some will not, and a parcel that arrives with questions attached becomes something they have to manage. Send something small, say you are around, and let them decide what to explain and when.
Is a gift even the right thing? Sometimes not. If the choice is between a parcel and going round, go round. A gift sits alongside turning up and never in place of it, and where a rough patch is more than a difficult stretch the person who helps may need to be a professional. Nothing in a fragrance range is advice or support for a health issue.
How to buy well without knowing what is wrong
The useful reframe is that you are not buying with incomplete information about a person. You are buying with complete information about a room. Once you make that swap, the three questions below are all answerable.
So the range splits cleanly. In: reed diffusers from ₹749, candles from ₹399, wax melts at ₹499 where the ₹599 burner is already there. Out: attars, personal perfume, anything that has to go on skin. Out does not mean bad - a 3ml attar at ₹379 is a precise little gift in the right circumstances. It means the circumstances here do not supply the information it needs.
When you do not know how much capacity somebody has, assume very little. That single assumption gets you to the reed diffuser most of the time, and to the candle when you want something lighter in price and in register.
The honest version is both, in the right order: say something first, send something small second. SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, so the message was always going to travel separately anyway. And where a rough patch is more than a hard stretch, the person who helps may need to be a professional - a gift is a gesture of attention and nothing in it is advice or support where anybody's health is concerned.
- Switch the question: not what does she need, but what is her room like.
- Rule out anything worn. Taste needs facts you have not been given.
- Pick the lowest-effort object - a reed at Rs 749 asks nothing of anybody.
- Say something first, send second, and make clear no reply is needed.
The products that survive not knowing
The reeds are the centre of this page. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint and the least declarative of the five, which makes it the safest thing to put in a home you are guessing about. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night jasmine, Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile, and Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is pine, sage and cedar, with Fresh Brew at ₹849 in Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla for somebody who likes a sweeter room. All are 50ml at those prices, about 6 to 10 weeks, with 130ml from ₹1,249 for a larger space and refills at ₹2,399 and ₹3,499. The candles are the smaller route: Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. Where a flame is not a good idea, wax melts at ₹499 with a ₹599 ceramic burner are the flameless route, and the burner is not optional.
| The option | Who it suits, and where it fails |
|---|---|
| A reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹1,349 | Needs to know only that their home is not already scented. No flame, no socket, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks in 50ml. The one gift here that costs the recipient no effort at all, which is why it heads this table when you cannot tell how much capacity somebody has. It fails where there is already a set of reeds in the same room, and 130ml is too much for a small flat. |
| A candle · ₹399 to ₹999 | Needs to know only that they light things. ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, ₹699 for the duo. The lighter option in both price and register, and used up rather than kept, so it does not become a permanent object in a home that may already feel full. It fails where nobody is lighting anything at the moment, and an unlit candle is a small ongoing reminder of a gift not used. |
| Wax melts and a burner · ₹499 plus ₹599 | Needs to know whether they own a burner, and that is usually the sticking point. Melts alone at ₹499 are a component rather than a gift. Together at ₹1,098 they are flameless and genuinely useful where a flame is unwelcome, but they arrive as a small setup task, which is the opposite of what a rough patch calls for. |
| A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 | Needs to know their taste, which is precisely what you do not have. A lovely, precise gift under other circumstances - alcohol-free oil rolled on rather than sprayed, in four genuinely different compositions. Here it is the wrong instrument, because a guessed worn scent becomes one more thing to be polite about at the worst possible moment. |
Size, again, is the ethical question rather than the commercial one. 50ml rather than 130ml, one candle rather than the duo. Somebody in the middle of something is short of energy, and a large parcel arrives asking for gratitude, surprise and a phone call they have to be bright on. There is a second reason here too: when you do not know the details, a large gift is a guess about how bad things are, and guessing that out loud in the size of a box is a strange thing to do to somebody who has not told you. Keep it modest and let them decide what to say.
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.
| Gift | What it is | Who it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOSA scented candles | Hand-poured, small batches | Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours | from ₹399 |
| SOSA attars | Alcohol-free roll-on oil | Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is | from ₹379 |
| SOSA reed diffusers | Passive home fragrance | Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks | from ₹749 |
| SOSA Attar Trio | Pack of three attars | Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear | from ₹1,055 |
| SOSA wax melts | Flameless, needs a burner | Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too | from ₹499 |
| SOSA car fragrance | Hanging or spray | Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price | from ₹449 |
| SOSA reed duo sets | Two reeds in one box | Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion | from ₹1,498 |
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
- Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
- Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
- Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
- Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.

Versailles
The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.
What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.
So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.
