You already specify how a room sounds. You specify how light arrives in it, at what hour and off which surface. You specify what the hand meets at the door handle, the counter edge and the stair rail, and you argue about all three with a client who cannot yet see them. Air is the one medium in a building that almost never appears in a specification, and it is the only one the occupant takes inside their body. This is an argument for treating fragrance the way you already treat a material, and for holding it to the same standards, including the one about restraint.
Quick answers — read this first
Why is air the one medium architects never specify? Because it appears in the drawing set as a quantity rather than a quality. Air changes per hour, supply and extract rates, filtration grade, temperature and relative humidity all get specified precisely, by the services engineer, in units. What the air is like to breathe in that room, the way a designer would describe what a surface is like to touch, appears nowhere. There is no equivalent of a finishes schedule for it. That is not an oversight by any individual practice; it is a gap in the conventions, and it survives because there has never been a standard vocabulary for the quality of air the way there is for a timber, a plaster or an acoustic performance.

How should an architect think about a fragrance as a material? The same way you think about a finish. It has a character, which is what it is like rather than what it is called. It has weight, meaning how much of the room it occupies, which is a separable property from character in exactly the way that colour and mass are separable in a surface. It agrees or disagrees with the rest of the palette. It changes with conditions, moving with temperature and airflow the way a finish moves with the light through the day. And it can be overdone, which is the property architects understand fastest, because everybody has seen a good material specified in the wrong quantity and ruin a room.

Does this mean a scent should be part of a project specification? In a practice's own studio, obviously, because you control it. On a project, it is a live question and it belongs to the client rather than to the drawing set, since it is an operational choice that somebody has to own, run and pay for after handover. What is worth carrying into the design stage is the infrastructure and the honesty: where a machine could sit, whether the air-conditioning would distribute or defeat it, which rooms should never carry it, and the fact that no scent survives poor ventilation or poor cleaning. Ambient scent research supports better evaluations of a space at moderate effect sizes. It does not support anything stronger, and a specification should not imply that it does.
The short answer
Short answer: Architects already specify how a space sounds, how light falls and what the hand touches. Air is the one medium in a building that is almost never specified as a quality, though it is the only one the occupant takes inside their body. Treated as a material, a fragrance has four properties: character (what it is like), weight (how much of the room it occupies), palette agreement (whether it belongs with the concrete, timber, plaster or brass), and behaviour under conditions (it moves with temperature and airflow, as a finish moves with light). Like a finish, it can be overdone, and restraint is the specification. Hotel Collection registers from Rs 299, SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
If I treated fragrance as a material rather than an accessory, what would that actually mean?
It would mean giving it the four things you give any other material. 1. A character, described rather than named. Not the label on the bottle but what it is like: dry or full, green or warm, brisk or settled. The 1 Hotels-inspired register (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves) is the driest and greenest of the seven, with earth in it; the Ritz-Carlton-inspired one (white tea, bergamot, cedar) is lighter and has lift at the top; the Westin-inspired one (white tea, aloe, cedar) is the quietest; the St. Regis-inspired one (amber, violet, woods) is the plushest and reads as evening. From the Hotel Collection, from ₹299. 2. A weight, specified separately from the character. How much of the room it is allowed to occupy is a different decision from what it is, in the same way that a material's colour and its mass are different decisions. Weight is set by the machine, the setting and the volume of the room, which is also why we publish no comparative throw or longevity between registers. 3. An agreement with the palette. Cedar, vetiver and green leaves belong with exposed concrete, oiled timber, black steel and planting. White tea and bergamot belong with white plaster, glass and daylight. Amber, violet and polished woods belong with dark timber, leather and brass, at a low setting, in a room used in the evening. Disagreement is not a disaster, but it is legible, and you will notice it before your client does. 4. A behaviour under conditions. It moves with temperature and airflow the way a finish moves with light: warmer air carries it further and higher, a supply grille will fire it across a room in a stream, a mezzanine collects it. And like any finish it can be overspecified, which in this medium is the commonest failure by a distance. Hold it with a machine on a locked schedule, a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, app and timer) or a Sukoon (₹1,899), and set it at the lowest level that still registers. Your team breathe it for ten hours a day, which is the reason restraint here is not a matter of taste. SOSA's blends are its own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent of any hotel brand. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Four material properties a register actually has

The argument in three parts: the gap in the conventions, the material properties a register actually has, and why the dose is the part that carries an obligation.

Why this works
Fragrance, specified the way a material is specified
1Air is the one medium in a building that is almost never specified2A register has character, weight and agreement with the rest of the palette3It moves with temperature and airflow, as a finish moves with the light4It can be overdone exactly like a finish, and the dose is the discipline
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The gap
What the drawing set specifies, and the one thing it does not
Look at what a complete set actually pins down. Acoustics are specified: reverberation targets, absorption coefficients, a partition's rating, where a soft surface has to go so a meeting room does not ring. Light is specified twice over, once as illuminance and colour temperature in the electrical drawings and once, more carefully, in the way the openings are placed so that a wall receives the sun at a particular hour of a particular month. Touch is specified in the finishes schedule and in the ironmongery, and it is argued over at length, because everybody knows a client's memory of a building is partly in their hand. Air is specified too, but only as a quantity: air changes per hour, supply and extract in litres per second, filtration grade, set-point temperature and relative humidity. All of that is engineering and all of it is necessary and none of it says anything at all about what the air is like. There is no finishes schedule for air. There is no convention, no vocabulary and no drawing that carries it, which is why a practice that has spent four months on a stone selection will let the air of the finished building be decided by whichever cleaning product was on offer that month. The gap is in the conventions rather than in anyone's competence, and it is the most available unclaimed territory in the discipline.
Tip: acoustics, light and touch are all specified as qualities. Air is specified only as a quantity, and nowhere as a quality.
2
The properties
Four ways a register behaves exactly like a material
First, character, which is what it is like rather than what it is called, and which is the only useful way to compare registers. Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves reads dry, green and grounded, with earth in it. White tea, bergamot and cedar reads light and brisk, with lift at the top. White tea, aloe and cedar is the same family without the citrus edge and is the quietest of the set. Amber, violet and polished woods reads plush, powdery and settled, and belongs to the evening. Second, weight: how much of the room it is permitted to occupy, which is a decision you make separately from character, and which is set by the machine, the setting and the volume rather than by the blend. This is why there is no honest ranking of throw or longevity between registers, and why anyone who offers you one is describing their machine rather than their oil. Third, agreement with the palette, which is where an architect's instinct is already correct without any training: cedar, vetiver and green leaves with concrete, oiled timber, black steel and planting; white tea and bergamot with white plaster, glass and a lot of daylight; amber and violet with dark timber, leather and brass. Fourth, behaviour under conditions. A register moves with temperature and airflow the way a finish moves with light: warmer air carries it higher and further, so a studio reads differently in May than in December; a supply grille directly above a machine turns an even room into a directed stream; a double-height void or a mezzanine collects it upward and leaves the floor thin. All four registers named here are from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) and all are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations.
3
The obligation
The one property that is not just an aesthetic decision
A material can be overspecified. Everybody in a practice has watched a good stone get used on four surfaces instead of one, or a beautiful timber applied until the room felt upholstered, and everybody knows that the failure was quantity rather than selection. Fragrance fails in exactly that way and fails more easily, because the person specifying it adapts to it within minutes and can no longer perceive the quantity they have chosen. That is the mechanism behind every overscented lobby you have ever walked into and disliked, and none of them got there deliberately. Which is where the difference from other materials arrives, and it is worth stating without inflating it. A finish is looked at and touched. Air is taken inside the body of everybody in the room, all day, including your own team at their desks for ten hours and including a visitor who has a migraine pattern, a pregnancy or a fragrance sensitivity they are not going to mention to you. That does not make this a health product and we make no claim of any kind in that direction. It makes the dose a decision with an obligation attached rather than a preference, which is a distinction architects handle constantly in other parts of the work. The practical form of the obligation is short. Set it at the lowest level that still registers to somebody walking in from outside. Lock the schedule on a machine rather than leaving a dial where a hand can reach it, which is what the app and timer on a Vaayu (₹11,999) are for. Judge it cold, in the morning, from the door. And treat any sensitivity report from a member of staff as a recalibration signal and nothing else.
Tip: restraint here is not a matter of taste. It is the one material in the building that everybody in the room takes inside them.
The SOSA principle
Every other medium in a building is specified as a quality. Air is specified only as a quantity, by an engineer, in units - and it is the one medium the occupant takes inside their body.
Character, weight, palette agreement, behaviour under conditions. Four properties, four separate decisions, and a failure mode that is almost always quantity rather than selection.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Is this just a way of selling a diffuser with better vocabulary?
It is a fair suspicion and worth answering directly. The argument stands whether or not you buy anything: air is the least specified medium in a building, and a practice that thinks about it deliberately will make better decisions about ventilation, about where a plotter sits, about whether a materials store shares a return with a meeting room, and about cleaning products, none of which involve a purchase from us. Where the products come in is only at the last step, when a practice has decided it wants the air of its own studio to be chosen rather than accidental and needs something to hold that choice evenly and consistently. If the honest conclusion for your studio is that the air is already fine and needs nothing, that is a legitimate outcome of taking the question seriously.
Does ambient scent actually do anything measurable, or is this an aesthetic argument?
Both, with the emphasis on the aesthetic. The research on ambient scenting consistently associates pleasant, congruent scent with improved evaluations of a space and the service delivered in it, with longer dwell and with stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes. It also consistently finds that congruence and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting, and that no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor air quality. What that supports is a modest and real claim: a considered room is evaluated slightly better than an unconsidered one. What it does not support is anything about wellbeing, productivity, health or fees, and we will not make those claims. For a practice, the honest reason to do this is closer to the reason you chose the door handle.
Would you specify a scent on a client project the way you specify a finish?
We would not put it in a finishes schedule, and we would be careful about putting it in a specification at all, because it is an operating decision rather than a construction one. Somebody has to own it after handover: switch it on, keep it at a sensible level, and stop it drifting louder over the years, and that person is the client or their facilities team rather than the practice. What genuinely belongs in the design stage is the infrastructure and the conversation. Where would a machine sit, is there power there, will the air-conditioning distribute it or fire it across a room, which rooms must never carry it, and does the client understand that this is a thing they will be running rather than a thing you are installing. Raise it, plan for it, and let them decide.
How do I stop a register from arguing with the material palette?
Describe both in the same words and see whether they belong in the same sentence. If the palette is dry, grey, green and structural, then a dry, green, woody register belongs with it and a plush powdery one does not. If the palette is white, bright, glazed and daylit, then something with lift and citrus at the top agrees with it and a warm amber will feel like it has walked in from a different project. The disagreements are rarely catastrophic and they are always legible, in the same way that a warm timber against a cool grey is legible: you will notice it, and after a fortnight it will bother you. If you are unsure, the driest and quietest options are the safest, because a register with very little in it can sit alongside almost any palette without arguing.
Does temperature really change how a register reads through the year?
Enough that a studio which felt correct in December can feel a notch strong in May, and it catches people out because they assume the machine has changed rather than the air. Warmer air carries fragrance further and holds it higher, and a room that is being cooled hard has stronger air movement, both of which alter how the same setting is experienced. The practical response is not a complicated seasonal schedule, it is one review at each end of the year: walk in cold from outside in the peak of summer and again in the coolest month, and adjust by one notch if it is needed. This is also the reason to judge the level from the doorway rather than from the desk, and to judge it in the morning rather than the afternoon, when everyone inside has already adapted.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
