It is a fair question and the arithmetic behind it is sound as far as it goes. Twice the reeds is roughly twice the exposed wet surface, and roughly twice the surface really does mean roughly twice the evaporation rate. The trouble is the last step, where rate gets quietly swapped for coverage. Those are two different quantities measured in two different things, and only one of them is being changed. Here is the sum written out honestly, including the term that is missing from it.
Quick answers — read this first
Does doubling the reeds double the coverage of a reed diffuser? No. Doubling the reeds roughly doubles the exposed wet surface, and since evaporation happens at the surface, it roughly doubles the evaporation rate - the amount of fragrance released per hour. Coverage is a different quantity altogether. It is not a function of how fast scent is produced; it is a function of whether anything is moving that scent through the room. In a reed diffuser nothing is. So you double the input to a system that has no distribution, which raises concentration near the bottle and leaves the far side of the room exactly as it was. The honest summary: double the rate, the same reach, and a bottle that lasts around half as long.
If I use twice the reeds will the scent go twice as far? It will not, and the reason is that reach in a passive diffuser is not set by the bottle at all. Fragrance evaporates off the reeds into the air touching them and then moves only by drifting into neighbouring air, which is slow and directionless, while your ceiling fan, AC and open door remove scented air continuously. Those removal processes do not slow down because you added sticks. Doubling production against an unchanged removal rate raises the steady concentration near the source, which is why the table smells stronger, but it does not create a route to the far wall. Distance is set by air movement, and a reed diffuser has none of its own.
What does double the coverage actually require? Energy behind the fragrance, which is exactly what an active diffuser adds. For one ordinary bedroom an ultrasonic is the honest and cheaper answer: Boond Rs 899, Sukoon Rs 1,899 or Megh 6L Rs 3,499, running the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299, accepting that it adds humidity, can dilute the scent and can leave white dust where water is hard. If you want strong, undiluted scent in the specific place you sit or sleep rather than an evenly filled room, the waterless cordless SOSA Safar is Rs 3,999. If the space is large or open-plan, with the living, dining and passage connected, the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected volume.
The short answer
Short answer: No. Doubling the reeds roughly doubles the exposed wet surface and therefore roughly doubles the evaporation rate, which is fragrance released per hour. Coverage is not a function of evaporation rate - it is a function of whether anything is moving the scent through the room, and a reed diffuser moves nothing. So you get double the rate, the same reach, and a bottle that runs down in around half the time. Two reeds at Rs 749 is Rs 1,498 spent on the same physics. For a whole ordinary bedroom, an active ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. For strong scent where you sit, the waterless SOSA Safar Rs 3,999. For a large connected space, the SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.

Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
If I double the reeds, do I double the room coverage?
No, and the sum shows exactly where the reasoning breaks. The part that is right. Go from four reeds to eight and you roughly double the length of wet stick standing in the open air. Evaporation happens at the surface, so roughly twice the surface releases roughly twice the fragrance per hour. That is a real doubling and you will smell it at the bottle. The part that does not follow. Evaporation rate is measured in fragrance per hour. Coverage is measured in the volume of air that ends up carrying a noticeable concentration - a 150 sq ft bedroom at a 10 ft ceiling is 1,500 cubic feet, about 42m³. Nothing converts one into the other unless something is transporting the scent through that volume, and in a reed diffuser nothing is. Scent leaves the reeds into the air touching them, drifts slowly and without direction, and is removed by your fan, your AC and your doorway at the same rate as before. Double the input, unchanged transport, unchanged removal: the concentration near the source rises, the far corner does not move. The part nobody mentions. You are spending oil at twice the rate, so a bottle that runs about 6 to 10 weeks at its usual reed count is finished in around half that. Double the rate, the same reach, half the life. And doing it with a second bottle rather than more sticks does not help either - two Morning Freshness bottles at ₹749 is ₹1,498 for two hot spots rather than one covered room. What buys coverage. An active machine: Boond ₹899 or Sukoon ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 for one ordinary bedroom, with added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust in hard-water areas; the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for strong undiluted scent in the spot you occupy; the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a large or connected space. The sum, done properly, and the variable it is missing
The first two steps are arithmetic and they are correct. The third step is a substitution that does not hold.
Why this happens in your room
The doubling that happens and the one that does not
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
Start with what is genuinely true, because the reasoning only fails at the end. A reed releases fragrance from the wet length standing above the bottle neck, and evaporation is a surface process, so the output of the whole bottle is essentially proportional to the total exposed wet surface. Four reeds to eight, all the same thickness and pushed in to the same depth, is about twice that surface. So the bottle is now putting roughly twice as much fragrance into the air every hour as it was. That is not a rounding error or a perceptual illusion, and you will notice it as soon as the new sticks have wicked through - the air by the console or the bedside table carries a distinctly heavier dose. Anyone who tells you extra reeds do nothing is wrong. They do something specific and measurable, and the whole question is whether that specific thing is the thing you wanted.
Tip: twice the wet surface is genuinely twice the output per hour - that half of the arithmetic holds.
2
Step two
Coverage is not made of the same stuff as rate
Here is where the sum quietly changes units. Evaporation rate is an amount of fragrance per hour, released at one point in the room. Coverage is a volume of air carrying enough concentration for you to notice it - and volume is what you should be measuring, not floor area. A 150 sq ft bedroom under a 10 ft ceiling holds 1,500 cubic feet, about 42 cubic metres once you divide by 35.3. To turn a per-hour figure at one point into a noticeable concentration through 42 cubic metres, something has to carry the fragrance out to all of it faster than the room removes it. That carrying term is the whole question, and in a reed diffuser it is zero. No fan, no heat, no pressure, no airflow of its own. Multiply a rate by a transport term of zero and you get the same answer whatever you do to the rate. That is why doubling reeds cannot double coverage: the missing variable is not small, it is absent.
3
Step three
What you actually bought was half the weeks
So account for the trade properly. You have doubled the rate at which a fixed quantity of oil turns into vapour, which means you are spending the bottle at twice the speed. A SOSA reed diffuser gives about 6 to 10 weeks at the reed count it ships with, in an ordinary room; run it at double the evaporation rate and you are through it in roughly half that stretch. In exchange you have a stronger hot spot at the bottle and precisely the same reach you had before. Written as a line: double the rate, the same reach, half the life. Whether that is a good deal depends entirely on where you sit. On a bedside table it can be excellent. As an attempt to fill a bedroom it is the most expensive way to buy nothing, and buying a second bottle instead is the same mistake at ₹1,498 rather than ₹749. The thing that changes the coverage term is an active diffuser from ₹899 with the Hotel Collection from ₹299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for the space you actually occupy.
Tip: work out what the extra sticks cost you in weeks before you decide they were worth it.
The SOSA principle
Rate and reach are different quantities. Reeds multiply the first and cannot touch the second, because there is no term in a passive diffuser that carries scent through a room.
Double the exposed surface, double the output per hour, half the weeks in the bottle - and 42 cubic metres of bedroom air still unmoved.

The ladder from passive to active, in order - tap any image to see it on the store
Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

The SOSA edit, passive to active
Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.
The SOSA edit, passive to active
Which one matches what you actually want - ambience near the bottle, a whole room, or strong scent where you sit
No power, no noise, nothing to fail. Still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml from ₹1,249
The honest first upgrade for a whole room, and cheaper than the Safar. Runs the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799). It mixes oil with water, so it adds humidity, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust

A personal-space diffuser with strong near-field projection, not a whole-room machine
Waterless cold-air to approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, Bluetooth app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included. The genuine whole-space answer, and honestly oversized for a small bedroom
₹11,999
Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any room where doubling the reeds does effectively double coverage?
There is a case that looks like it, and it is worth explaining because it is the source of most of the confusing advice online. In a very small, closed, still room the whole space is effectively next to the bottle, so raising the concentration at the source raises it almost everywhere at once. A 60 sq ft bathroom at a 10 ft ceiling holds about 600 cubic feet, roughly 17 cubic metres, behind a shut door, and there the extra reeds genuinely can take the room from pleasant to unmistakable. But notice what did the work: the room's small volume and its lack of air exchange, not any new ability of the reeds to travel. Move the same bottle into a 42 cubic metre bedroom with a fan and the effect collapses back to a stronger table and an unchanged far wall.
How do I work out my room's volume?
Multiply the floor area by the ceiling height for cubic feet, then divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. A 10 by 12 bedroom is 120 sq ft, which under a 10 ft ceiling is 1,200 cubic feet, about 34 cubic metres. A 150 sq ft bedroom is 1,500 cubic feet, about 42 cubic metres. A 200 sq ft living room is 2,000 cubic feet, about 57 cubic metres. Volume is the right unit because fragrance fills air rather than floor, and it is also what a machine is specified against. One more thing worth checking: if the room has no door between it and the passage, dining area or kitchen, add those spaces in, because scent disperses through connected air regardless of what your floor plan calls each part.
If four reeds are half as strong as eight, can I just use two and make it last longer?
Yes, and it is a genuinely useful adjustment that almost nobody makes deliberately. Fewer reeds means less exposed wet surface, a lower evaporation rate, a gentler scent at the bottle and a longer run from the same oil. That is exactly the right setting for a small enclosed room, for a bedroom at night, or when you want the bottle to see you through a longer stretch. It is a dial, and it turns both ways. What it does not do in either direction is change how far the fragrance reaches, so do not expect a quieter bottle to be quieter across the room and a louder one to be louder across the room. Both are the same distance. Only the intensity at the source and the number of weeks are moving.
Would two smaller diffusers in different corners give even coverage?
They give you two areas of concentration with a thin middle, which is not the same thing as even coverage and is worth understanding before you spend Rs 1,498 on a pair. Each bottle is strongest where it stands and fades from there, and because neither has any means of carrying scent outward, they do not blend into a uniform field - they simply create two gradients. If your room has two places you genuinely spend time in, such as a bedside and a reading chair, then two reeds serving both spots is a reasonable purchase and we would not talk you out of it. If the goal is to open the door and have the whole room smell of one fragrance, the same money moves you to a Boond at Rs 899 with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299, which is an active machine doing the job you are describing.
Is the Vaayu the answer if I want genuinely even coverage?
It is, when the space justifies it, and it is not when the space does not - we would rather say so than take the order. The SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is a waterless cold-air system rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer and four hotel-inspired blends included. That is the right machine for a large room or a connected living, dining and passage running together, where even fragrance across the whole volume is the goal. For a 10 by 12 bedroom of about 34 cubic metres it is heavily oversized, and an ultrasonic at Rs 899 to Rs 3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 does that job properly for a fraction of the money. Send us your layout on WhatsApp and we will tell you which honestly.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.
Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
