Yes, they do, and there is no formulation, price point or brand that changes it — evaporation is temperature-driven and warm air simply takes more oil off a reed per hour. The interesting question is not whether it happens but what a sensible person does about it. My answer is to stop treating a reed diffuser as a fixed object you buy once and start treating it as something with a summer setting and a winter setting. The two dials are size and reed count, both of which you already control, and one of which is free.
Quick answers — read this first
Yes: warm air raises the evaporation rate, so the same bottle with the same six reeds empties sooner in the hot months than in the cool ones. Our 6–8 weeks for a 50ml and 14–18 weeks for a 130ml are working windows across an ordinary year, not a promise for any single month.

Dial one — size: run the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 through the hot part of the year and the 50ml through the cool part. That is buying duration, not strength — a 130ml is not louder at the same six reeds.

Dial two — reeds: drop to four or five reeds through the hottest weeks and go back to six, or seven, when it cools. Free, reversible in ten seconds, and the only true throughput control you have.

The running-cost answer: if you have decided to run hard through summer, the oil-only refill at ₹2,399 for 300ml works out around ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml.
The short answer
Short answer: yes. A reed diffuser evaporates faster in summer because evaporation rises with temperature, and the effect is amplified by anything that warms the bottle itself — direct sun, a west-facing wall, a warm appliance nearby. This is not a defect and it is not brand-specific.
The mechanism: oil climbs six fibre reeds by capillary action and leaves from the exposed surface. The rate at which it leaves is set by temperature, air movement and how much reed surface is exposed. You cannot change the weather, you can usually change the placement, and you can always change the reed count — which is why reed count is the seasonal dial.
Shop: for a hot season, the 130ml at ₹1,349 covers 14–18 weeks without a repurchase, and the 300ml oil refill at ₹2,399 covers roughly 8–11 months of topping up. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Do reed diffusers evaporate faster in summer, and how do I plan for it?
1. Yes, and the published windows already assume it. A 50ml lasts 6–8 weeks and a 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks at six reeds. Those ranges have two numbers in them precisely because the same bottle behaves differently in different months. Hot weather sits at the short end; cool weather sits at the long end.

2. Drop the reed count for the hot stretch. Four or five reeds instead of six is the single most useful seasonal adjustment there is. You lose a little presence and you get weeks back, and you can reverse it in ten seconds when the weather turns. Reed count is the only genuine throughput control on a passive diffuser.

3. Buy the bigger bottle for the hot months, the smaller one for the cool ones. A 130ml at ₹1,349 gets you through a hot season on one purchase. A 50ml at ₹749–₹849 is the sensible size when a bottle is going to last anyway. To be explicit: the 130ml is not a strength upgrade. At six reeds it projects the same as the 50ml. It lasts longer, and that is the entire reason to buy it.

4. Fix the placement before you change anything else. Direct sun on the glass is worth more weeks than any other single factor, and warm appliances — a television, a fridge, a router, a lamp — quietly do the same thing. Moving the bottle to an interior wall costs nothing and often recovers most of what the season was taking.

5. If you run several bottles hard, solve the running cost with oil, not with compromise. The refill is oil only — you reuse your own glass vessel and your own reeds — at roughly ₹7–8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml. A 300ml at ₹2,399 runs about 8–11 months; the 500ml at ₹3,499 runs about 14–18.

TL;DR: yes, summer empties a bottle faster. Manage it with two dials — fewer reeds through the heat (free) and a bigger bottle bought for duration rather than volume. Get the glass out of the sun first; that is usually the biggest single win, and it costs nothing.
SOSA Fresh Brew Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla reed diffuser
The size to run through a hot season
SOSA Fresh Brew 130ml · Coorg coffee & Kerala vanilla ₹1,349 / 130ml
Fourteen to eighteen weeks against six to eight, which is the difference between one purchase covering a hot season and three purchases doing it. Said plainly: this is duration, not volume — at the same six fibre reeds a 130ml projects like a 50ml, and I would rather you bought it knowing that. 9.5 on our internal strength scale at six reeds, on the alcohol-free, phthalate-free, heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity. 50ml ₹849 if a small bottle suits your year better.

Part one — the two dials you already own

Nearly everybody treats a reed diffuser as a finished object: you buy it, you stand it somewhere, and whatever happens next is what the product does. That is a shame, because the format has two controls built into it. One is the number of reeds standing in the neck, which sets throughput. The other is which bottle you choose to have running at a given time of year, which sets how long that throughput can continue. Used across a year they turn the seasonal swing from something that happens to you into something you have decided.

1
DIAL ONE · FREE
Reed count, moved down for the heat
Six fibre reeds is the count each SOSA composition is dosed for. Take two out through the hottest weeks and you reduce the exposed surface, which reduces throughput, which stretches the bottle — at the cost of a slightly quieter room. That is usually a trade worth taking, because heat has already raised the release rate: four or five reeds in May can deliver something close to what six delivered in January, and last far better doing it. Stand the spares upright in a small glass rather than flat on a surface, because reed oil marks wood and stone, and put them back when the weather turns. It is the most under-used feature of the format, and it costs nothing.
The rule: in hot weather the reed dial moves down. Adding reeds because a bottle is emptying fast makes it empty faster.
2
DIAL TWO · COSTS MONEY
Size, chosen for the season ahead
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser 130mlMountain Breeze 130ml₹1,349 · 14–18 weeksA 130ml holds more oil, so it runs longer: 14–18 weeks against 6–8. That makes it the sensible thing to have standing through the hot part of the year, when the rate is high and a small bottle disappears. In the cool part of the year the arithmetic flips: a 50ml will go the distance anyway, and it costs less to change scent. What I will not do is sell you the larger bottle as a strength upgrade, because it is not one. At the same six reeds it projects the same. All you are buying is time, and time is a perfectly good thing to buy; it just is not volume. Prices: 50ml from ₹749, 130ml from ₹1,249, depending on the composition.
The rule: size buys weeks. If you want the room louder, that is reeds, airflow and composition — never millilitres.
3
BEFORE EITHER DIAL
The five-minute placement audit that gives weeks back
Before you spend either dial, walk round and check four things, because a bottle in a bad spot is losing more to its position than to the season. Is any direct sun falling on the glass at any hour? Is it against an exterior wall that bakes in the afternoon, within a couple of feet of a television, fridge, router or lamp, or sitting in the stream of a split AC or a fast ceiling fan? Each of those is warming or stripping the reeds continuously, and together they can cost more weeks than the change of season does. An interior wall, out of the sun, at roughly waist to chest height, near a doorway where people pass a few times an hour, both preserves the bottle and distributes the fragrance. It is free, and it is the first thing I would do in April.

Part two — the year, planned rather than endured

Below is how I would set a reed diffuser across an ordinary Indian year. I have deliberately described the seasons rather than naming precise months, because the country is far too varied for a calendar to be honest — a hot stretch in Jaipur is not a hot stretch in Shillong, and the coast runs damp when the interior runs dry. Read the left column as a description of your weather rather than a date.

The seasonal setting sheet
Size, reed count and expectation, season by season
Season, roughly What the weather is doing Size to have running Reeds Expect from the bottle
Peak heat — the hottest weeks, broadly March to June in much of India ★ High temperature drives evaporation hard; sun on walls and glass 130ml, from ₹1,249 4–5 The short end of its window, even with the dial down
Wet and humid — the monsoon stretch Saturated air slows evaporation; houses shut up Either size 6–7 Longer than expected, and quieter in the room
Warm and settled — post-monsoon Moderate temperature, more open windows 50ml, from ₹749 6 Close to the middle of the stated window
Cool — the coldest weeks, broadly December to February in the north Low temperature slows release; still, dense air 50ml, from ₹749 6–7 The long end of its window
Festive and hosting weeks, whenever they fall Irrelevant to weather; you want presence for a few days Whatever is running Add 2–3, then remove A short, deliberate spike in throughput
Empty flat — travel, a closed second home Nobody to smell it; still air Whatever is running Down to 2–3, or none The bottle waits for you rather than emptying
The honest caveat: the month ranges above are broad general climate framing for the subcontinent, not a schedule — India runs several climates at once, and a coastal flat, a hill town and an inland city will not share a calendar. Treat the weather description as the instruction and the months as a rough hint. Equally, we cannot give you a number for how many weeks the heat costs you: that depends on room volume, ceiling height, ventilation and how sealed the flat is. The 6–8 and 14–18 week windows are SOSA working guidance across an ordinary year.

The three purchases a seasonal plan actually needs
The SOSA principle
A reed diffuser has a summer setting and a winter setting. Most people never touch either.
Reed count is free and reversible in ten seconds. It is the closest thing this format has to a dial, and the hot months are exactly when to turn it down.

Part three — what a seasonal plan is actually worth

Let me put the arithmetic in front of you without inventing figures I do not have. A 50ml bottle at ₹749 to ₹849 delivers 6–8 weeks at six reeds; a 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 delivers 14–18 weeks on the same six. Per week of scented room, the larger bottle is meaningfully cheaper, and that gap widens in a season when a small bottle is heading for the short end of its range. If a hot stretch would take three 50ml bottles to cover, one 130ml very likely covers it for less money and two fewer trips to the checkout. That is a duration case, not a performance case.

The oil refill changes the arithmetic again, and more sharply. It is oil only — you keep your own glass vessel and your own reeds — at roughly ₹7–8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 per millilitre for a fresh 50ml bottle, which is up to about 55% less. A 300ml at ₹2,399 keeps a vessel going for something like 8–11 months; the 500ml at ₹3,499 for 14–18 months. If your plan for the hot season is to keep the room properly scented rather than to ration it, the refill is the thing that makes that decision affordable, and it is the purchase I would make before a second bottle. The method is simple: lift the reeds out, pour to the neck, return the reeds, and flip once so both ends are coated. One caution I repeat often — the refill does not include reeds, and we do not sell replacement reeds separately. That is a genuine gap in our range, and the working guidance is to refresh reeds every few months, which in practice means with a new bottle.

And the boundary of the whole exercise. If what the hot season really exposes is that you want a strong room on demand — a burst before guests arrive, nothing at three in the afternoon — no seasonal reed plan will give you that. A reed diffuser is constant, passive and deliberately low by design; it cannot surge. The honest recommendation is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, which covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low, and comes with a remote and steady, two-hour and four-hour timers plus three 15ml Hotel Collection scents in the box. It is water-based and takes the Hotel Collection only; reed oil never goes into it, and Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Most homes end up running both formats, for different jobs.

You cannot stop summer taking weeks from a bottle. You can decide in advance which weeks it takes.

Part four — what to buy, and when in the year to buy it

A short buying calendar. Nothing here is urgent and nothing here is a subscription; it is simply the order in which these purchases make sense if you accept that the hot months cost you oil.

Not for this problem: adding reeds — Raises throughput on top of a rate the heat already raised Costs weeks, not rupees
Honest notes for buyers: bottle-life figures are SOSA working guidance across an ordinary Indian year — 50ml 6–8 weeks and 130ml 14–18 weeks at six fibre reeds — and will sit at the short end in hot weather and the long end in cool. Season and month references on this page are general climate framing rather than a schedule for your city. A 130ml is a longer bottle, never a louder one. Refills are oil only and do not include reeds; replacement reeds are not sold separately, an honest gap, and our guidance is to refresh them every few months. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. The range is alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity. Reed oil never goes into a Sukoon, Boond or Megh — and the 6L Megh is a runtime machine at roughly 215 sq ft, never a coverage upgrade. Stand the bottle on a tray; keep it away from children and pets.
SOSA reed diffuser oil refill 300ml and 500ml
What makes a hot season affordable
SOSA reed diffuser refill · oil only ₹2,399 / 300ml
If the season is going to take more oil, buy oil more cheaply. The refill is exactly that — no new glass, no new reeds, just the same five compositions at roughly ₹7–8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml bottle, which is up to about 55% less. A 300ml runs a vessel about 8–11 months; the 500ml at ₹3,499 runs 14–18 months. Remove the reeds, pour to the neck, return them, and flip once so both ends are coated. Gloves on, tray underneath.

A note from Sonal

The question I get most often in April is some version of "is my diffuser faulty?" It almost never is. A product bought in a cool month is being judged in a hot one, and nobody told the buyer that the same bottle behaves differently across a year. That is a failure of explanation, not of manufacturing.

The part I wish more people knew is how much control they already have. Reed count is free, reversible in ten seconds, and genuinely changes throughput. I run four reeds through the worst of the heat in my own home and put the others back when the evenings turn. The room is a little quieter for a couple of months, and the bottle survives the season instead of vanishing halfway through it.

The one thing I will keep repeating, at the risk of tedium: buy the 130ml because you want fewer repurchases, not because you want a louder room. It will not be louder. It will last two to three times as long, which is a better reason anyway. Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Do reed diffusers really evaporate faster in summer?
Yes. Evaporation rises with temperature, so the same bottle with the same six reeds releases more per hour and empties sooner. Our published windows — 6–8 weeks for a 50ml, 14–18 for a 130ml — are working guidance across an ordinary year, and hot months sit at the short end.
How can I make my reed diffuser last through summer?
Three things, in order. Get the glass out of direct sun and away from warm appliances and exterior walls. Take the reed count down to four or five for the hottest weeks. Then, for a whole season on one purchase, run the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349. The first two are free.
Should I buy a bigger reed diffuser for the hot months?
It is a sensible seasonal purchase, provided you buy it for the right reason. A 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, so one bottle can cover a hot season. At the same six reeds it projects the same as a 50ml — it is a longer bottle, not a stronger one, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling rather than explaining.
How many reeds should I use in summer?
Four or five instead of six through the hottest weeks. Less exposed surface means lower throughput and a longer bottle, at the cost of a slightly quieter room — a fair trade when the heat has already raised the release rate. Stand the spares upright in a small glass and put them back when it cools.
Is a refill cheaper than buying new bottles every summer?
Considerably. The oil-only refill works out at roughly ₹7–8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml — up to about 55% less — because you reuse your own glass vessel and reeds. A 300ml at ₹2,399 runs about 8–11 months and a 500ml at ₹3,499 about 14–18. Note that refills do not include reeds, and reeds are not sold separately.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on seasonal evaporation and how to plan a year of reed diffuser use around it. Bottle-life windows (50ml 6–8 weeks, 130ml 14–18 weeks at six reeds), refill durations (300ml roughly 8–11 months, 500ml roughly 14–18 months) and the guidance to refresh reeds every few months are SOSA working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurements. The seasonal month ranges given in the setting sheet are broad general climate framing for the Indian subcontinent, offered as a rough hint rather than a schedule — India runs several climates simultaneously and coastal, inland and hill regions differ substantially. We give no figure for how many weeks hot weather costs a bottle, because that depends on room volume, ceiling height, ventilation and sun exposure and is not a number we can honestly quote.
