Why ask about it first? Because achievements are routinely understated to parents. Asking two factual questions gets you the real version, which is what makes the note specific.
What should the note avoid? Relief, surprise and comparison with siblings - all three are easy to write by accident and all three change what the sentence means.
He almost certainly downplayed it to you
Start with the reporting problem, because it changes what you should do before you buy anything. Most people adjust how they describe achievements to their parents, and the adjustment is almost always downward. There are two reasons and both are ordinary. The first is that describing something fully to a parent can feel like asking for approval, which people become self-conscious about somewhere in their twenties and never entirely stop being. The second is that the parental response to good news is often large - which is lovely, and which some people manage by giving a smaller version of the news. The consequence is a quiet mismatch: the person whose acknowledgement would carry the most weight is frequently working from the most compressed account. The fix is not complicated. Ask two factual questions before you write anything. How long were you actually at this. What was the hardest part. Those are not emotional questions and they are easy to answer, and they will usually produce a version that is longer and harder than the one you were given at the time. Then write the note from that. Precision is what matters here, because a parent's praise is the one most people have been measuring themselves against all their lives, and that makes general praise weightless and specific praise extremely durable. We are proud of you is what every parent says. You were doing this at six in the morning for two years while working full time is what almost nobody says, and it is the sentence that gets remembered. Three or four of those, written down rather than only spoken, because praise said out loud in person is very often deflected within seconds - it was not a big deal, it just worked out - while a note cannot be deflected in the moment and gets read again later when nobody is watching. Three things to keep out of it. Relief: we were so worried, we did not know how this would turn out. Honest, and it implies doubt about him, which is not what you mean. Surprise: we never expected this. Same problem, sharper. Comparison: better than your cousin, better than anybody in the family - even flattering comparisons measure him against somebody else, and coming from a parent that is the measurement that matters most. Write about him alone. On the object, keep it his rather than for a household. Parents tend towards the practical, and practical things merge into the general running of a life rather than staying attached to a person. Something he uses himself, chosen because he would like it, is the one that stays. There is also an instinct worth resisting, which is furnishing his life in your register - giving what you would have chosen, in the style of the family home. Whatever he achieved, he did on his own judgement, and a gift that quietly hands back a piece of your taste is a slightly smaller gift than it looks. On timing, the usual rule holds and families sharpen it: congratulations arrive all at once in the group chat and then stop by about day three. A gift in week two or three lands in silence and reads as deliberate. If the achievement was the end of a long effort, the flat stretch that commonly follows also arrives around then, once the attention has stopped. Now the objects. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees is the most practical choice and is the format most men actually use, because it removes the friction: fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, applied with a finger rather than sprayed, spill-proof, no cap to lose, six to eight hours of wear, and it survives months in a bag, a glovebox or a desk drawer. Titan at five hundred rupees is Arabica coffee, roasted wood, black pepper, frankincense and leather. Beast at five hundred and forty-nine is smoked whiskey, roasted coffee, spicy leather, amber resin and vanilla bark. Siren at four hundred and eighty-nine is black cherry, espresso, warm vanilla and cedar smoke. Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk. Sway at four hundred and fifty-nine is dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, red patchouli and vanilla husk. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees suits an office or a shared workspace because it does not project: twelve millilitres of undiluted perfume oil in a glass roll-on with no alcohol carrier, opening quietly and staying within roughly an arm's length. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine is a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate, which is worth stating plainly. Adaa is three hundred and seventy-nine, Ameeri three hundred and eighty-five, Mastani three hundred and eighty-nine. The Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees hands the choice over, which is the sensible option if you are working from a picture of his taste that is a few years old - parents often are. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is the simplest option, with Bookshop in cedarwood, sage and lemon and Evening Walks in frankincense and tonka being the drier two, and Misty Mornings and Cozy Corner the warmer pair. All lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in small batches in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours. A reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees works where there is a room that is his, and is the natural gift if the achievement was a home of his own - the first-home page linked below has those rules, including why it should arrive after the move rather than on possession day. Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine and Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine are the driest registers. A minute to set up, then nothing, two to three months with no flame, no socket and no switch. Reeds use their own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action; reed oil never goes into a machine, and the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees is ultrasonic-only at three to six drops per tank. And on how much: nothing is being repaid here, so no obligation is created, and between a parent and a child the ceiling is whatever you decide it is.

Versailles
There is a pattern I noticed years before we sold anything, and it is the reason this section exists. Somebody achieves something that took them years - the flat, the first car bought outright, the manuscript finished at last - and for about forty-eight hours the phone does not stop. Then it stops completely. The achievement took three years; the celebrating took a weekend, and then everybody went back to their own lives, which is not unkind, it is just how attention works.
Which means a gift arriving in week two or three lands in an empty field. That is the single most useful thing on any of these pages and it costs nothing. The second is that a congratulations gift is not repaying anything: nobody owes anybody here, so there is no ledger to balance and no risk of over-gifting into an obligation. You are free to be as generous as the relationship allows. And write the note about what they did, not about how you feel - name the four years, the thing they gave up, the draft they rewrote eleven times.
Two honest things. If somebody has just bought a new car, do not buy them something to cover the smell of it - most new owners like it, it fades on its own, and a fragrance is better introduced a few weeks later in a restrained register. And if somebody has bought a new home, size the gift to the home: our Vaayu is a waterless nebuliser built for spaces of roughly a thousand cubic metres, which is a hotel lobby rather than a three-bedroom flat, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with what they achieved and what their place is like, and we will say honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call.
