Three reasons, and the first one is uncomfortable. The renovation is probably one of your sources. Epoxy flooring, paint, new MDF joinery and adhesives release for weeks, so a studio smells worse before it smells better - and that timing reads as failure.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my detailing studio still smell like a workshop after renovation? Usually because the renovation added sources of its own. Epoxy floor coating, paint, new MDF and plywood joinery, adhesives and racking all release for weeks, so the building smells worse before it smells better and the timing gets read as failure.
What else gets missed in a renovation? The air. Floors, lighting, storage and seating all photograph; ventilation does not, so it is the one line that gets cut - and it was usually the actual problem in the first place.
What carries the old smell through? Whatever was kept. Existing racking and shelving in the chemical store, the compressor room, floor drains, and the original extraction ductwork - all porous or contaminated, and all left in place because they were not part of the visible scope.
The short answer
Short answer: usually because the renovation is now a source itself - epoxy, paint, MDF and adhesives release for weeks - plus the air was the line item that got cut, and the porous things that held the old smell were kept.
The pick: time and ventilation first; then, once a Monday morning smells of nothing, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) or a reed at ₹849 in the customer zone.
Next step: date the finish of the fit-out and give it six to eight weeks with real air before drawing conclusions. Or ask for a studio scenting plan.
Why does my detailing studio still smell like a workshop after renovation?
Three reasons, and the first is the one nobody expects. One: the renovation is now a source. Epoxy or polyurethane floor coating - the single most common and most under-estimated one in an automotive fit-out. Fresh paint. New MDF and plywood joinery, which releases steadily for weeks. Construction adhesives and sealants. New racking, cabinets and worktops. Acoustic panels. Foam in new seating. Every one of those releases over weeks rather than days, and a studio that has just finished a renovation is carrying a fresh set of emissions on top of whatever it had before. So the building smells worse before it smells better - and because everybody assesses it the week it reopens, the timing produces the wrong conclusion. If your fit-out finished within the last month or two, the honest advice is to date it, ventilate hard, and reserve judgement for six to eight weeks. The test is whether it survives a weekend with nobody in the building - if it does, it is off-gassing rather than work. Two: the air was the line item that got cut. This is the structural reason and it is almost universal. Floors, lighting, storage, a reception desk, seating - all of those photograph, all of them are visible on a walk-round, and all of them are easy to justify. Ventilation does not photograph. It is invisible, it is unglamorous, and when the budget tightens near the end it is the line that moves. So a studio emerges from a renovation looking transformed with its air unchanged - and since air was usually the actual problem in the first place, the smell that prompted the renovation is still there. Worse, a good fit-out often seals better than what it replaced: tighter doors, better glazing, closed-up gaps. That is correct in every other respect and it reduces the accidental air exchange the old building was quietly relying on. Three: the porous things were kept. Renovations replace what is in scope, and scope follows what customers see. So the chemical store's existing shelving stays. The old racking stays. The compressor room is untouched. The floor drains are the same drains. The original extraction ductwork - which has had years of solvent-laden air through it - is reused because it works mechanically. All of those either hold or continue to release the old smell, and none of them were on the drawing. What to do, in order.Date the fit-out and give it time with real air - open everything, run extraction hard, and do not conclude anything for six to eight weeks. Then check the three things above: is there genuinely more air than before, or only tighter doors; what was kept that should not have been; and is the customer side now sealed without its own make-up air, which turns the door to the bay into an inlet. Then look at storage and residue, because a renovation frequently relocates the chemical store to wherever there was room rather than wherever it should be, and new racking next to the customer boundary is a common accident. And what not to do. Do not conclude the renovation failed and reach for a register. Fragrance does not remove or reduce any chemical in the air - it adds a second smell beside the first - and a register over a curing epoxy floor gives you both, which is a particularly poor combination. Masking also delays the fix, and in a newly renovated building the fix is frequently just patience. When to add it. Walk in on a Monday morning after a closed weekend, from outside. When the room smells of nothing at all, you are ready - then one dry register in the customer zone: Mountain Breeze at ₹849 or Morning Freshness at ₹749, on one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 across a connected floor, waterless and key-locked. The working bay, the booth, the cure area and the chemical store are never scented.SOSA makes no claim that fragrance affects reviews, referrals, ticket size or repeat business. It works alongside extraction, ventilation, cleaning and correct chemical storage, never instead of them. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Usually because the renovation is one of the sources - epoxy floor, paint, MDF joinery and adhesives release for weeks. Plus the air was the line item that got cut, because ventilation does not photograph, and the porous things were kept because they were not in scope.
Not yet. Once a Monday morning after a closed weekend smells of nothing: Mountain Breeze at ₹849 or one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the customer zone.
The honest options for the space in question, sized to the floor rather than to the ambition. The images link to the product pages so every figure here can be checked.
A connected reception, lounge and handover floor of ~1,500-3,000 sq ft
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - on one unit. In an automotive studio the waterless part earns its place ahead of the reach: no mist, so nothing damp settles on fresh paint, glass, film or tooling. The key-lock holds the level the sofa chose against a well-meaning front desk, the 1h/4h/8h/24h timer keeps it on studio hours, and wall or HVAC mounting puts it on the right wall rather than the counter. 400ml tank, roughly 75-90 days depending on intensity and run hours, under 38dB.
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - the driest register SOSA makes and the automotive default, because it reads as clean workshop air rather than as a spa. Where the lounge is a single seating group, this bottle on the console at ₹849 for 50ml carries the studio's register on its own, three or four reeds in, flipped weekly; 130ml at ₹1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, six fibre reeds.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft) on a single unit, ₹11,999. No water and no mist, so nothing settles on paint, glass, film or tooling. Adjustable intensity, 400ml tank running roughly 75-90 days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, key-lock, auto-stop, under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W. Freestanding, wall or HVAC mount. CE, RoHS and SGS certified - electrical and compliance marks only. Made in India. Refill supply: confirm with SOSA.
The first is uncomfortable, the second is structural, and the third is about what was never on the drawing.
1
New sources
Epoxy, paint, MDF and adhesive release for weeks
Floor coating is the most common and most under-estimated in an automotive fit-out, followed by paint, new MDF and plywood joinery, construction adhesives, racking, worktops, acoustic panels and foam. A studio that has just reopened carries a fresh set of emissions on top of whatever it had - so it smells worse before better.
Rule: date the fit-out and reserve judgement for six to eight weeks.
2
The cut line
Ventilation does not photograph
Floors, lighting, storage, a reception desk and seating are all visible, justifiable and easy to keep in scope. Air is invisible and unglamorous, so when the budget tightens near the end it is the line that moves - and since air was usually the actual problem, the smell that prompted the renovation is still there afterwards.
Test: ask what the fit-out changed about the air. Often the honest answer is nothing.
3
Sealed tighter
A good fit-out reduces accidental air exchange
Tighter doors, better glazing, gaps closed up - correct in every other respect, and it removes the unplanned ventilation the old building was quietly relying on. If the customer side is now sealed without its own make-up air, the door to the bay becomes an inlet and the lounge gets worse than it was before the work.
Test: better sealing without better supply makes a building tighter, not cleaner.
4
Kept
Scope follows what customers see
The chemical store's existing shelving stays. Old racking stays. The compressor room is untouched. Floor drains are the same drains. Original extraction ductwork, with years of solvent-laden air through it, is reused because it works mechanically. All of them hold or release the old smell and none were on the drawing.
Rule: the things that carried it through are the things nobody was looking at.
5
Not a register
Do not conclude failure and reach for fragrance
Fragrance does not remove or reduce any chemical in the air - a register over a curing epoxy floor gives you both, which is a particularly poor combination - and masking delays a fix that in a newly renovated building is frequently just patience. The bay, booth, cure area and store are never scented.
Rule: the cheapest thing you can do here is wait six weeks with the doors open.
The SOSA principle
A renovated building smells worse before it smells better, and everybody assesses it in the week it reopens. The timing produces exactly the wrong conclusion.
Date the finish of the fit-out, ventilate hard, and reserve judgement for six to eight weeks. If it survives a weekend with nobody in the building, it is off-gassing rather than work.
The default register for an automotive studio: Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar at ₹849. Dry, cool and faintly technical, which is what a car-care studio should smell of, on the lounge console or carried across a whole customer floor by the Vaayu.
Why it can be worse, and what was probably left out.

Still smelling like a workshop after renovation
The question
The answer
Why is it worse than before?
Because the renovation is now a source. Epoxy floor coating, paint, new MDF and plywood joinery, adhesives, racking and foam all release over weeks rather than days.
How long should I wait?
Six to eight weeks with real air - open everything and run extraction hard. If it survives a weekend with nobody in the building, it is off-gassing rather than work.
What usually got cut?
The air. Floors, lighting, storage and seating all photograph and ventilation does not, so it is the line that moves when the budget tightens - and it was usually the actual problem.
Can a good fit-out make it worse?
Yes. Tighter doors, better glazing and closed-up gaps remove the accidental air exchange the old building relied on - and a sealed customer side without make-up air turns the bay door into an inlet.
Should I add a register now?
Not yet. Fragrance does not remove or reduce any chemical in the air, and a register over a curing epoxy floor gives you both. Wait until a Monday morning smells of nothing, then a reed at ₹849 or a Vaayu at ₹11,999.
One machine for the customer floor: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999 - waterless so nothing settles on paint, glass or film, wall or HVAC mounted on the far side of the customer zone from the bay door, key-locked at the level the furthest sofa allowed and timed to studio hours.
One register, the customer floor only, set from the furthest seat
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 waterless, key-locked and timed to studio hours; Mountain Breeze ₹849 or Morning Freshness ₹749 as the register. Send the floor plan with the bay door and the extraction runs marked and we will return it with the wall position.
One register, delivered at whatever size the customer-facing zone is, with the rule that travels alongside each product. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA detailing studio specification
What goes where in a premium detailing, PPF or ceramic-coating studio
A connected reception, lounge and handover floor of ~1,500-3,000 sq ft
Wall or HVAC mounted on the far side of the customer zone from the bay door; level set from the furthest seat late in the day, then key-locked; timer on studio hours
A SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is the water-based rung for a single enclosed lounge of roughly 270-320 sq ft in a dry room, and a Boond (₹899) for a small consultation corner; both run on the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299), which is not reed diffuser oil and is not interchangeable with it. Above about 3,000 sq ft of one connected volume the step is one SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) on the duct, not a second Vaayu. Fragrance does not remove, neutralise or reduce any chemical in the air. It is an ambience decision like lighting or seating, and it works alongside extraction, ventilation, cleaning and source control, never instead of them. Working bays, spray and cure areas and chemical stores are never scented, and a studio that smells of solvent has a ventilation problem to fix first. SOSA makes no claim that fragrance affects reviews, referrals, ticket size or repeat business. Ask for a studio scenting plan and send the floor plan with the bay doors marked.

A note from Sonal
The uncomfortable answer first: your renovation is probably one of the sources. Epoxy floor coating is the big one in an automotive fit-out, and then paint, new MDF and plywood, construction adhesives, racking, acoustic panels, foam in new seating. All of them release over weeks, not days. So the building smells worse before it smells better - and everybody judges it the week it reopens, which produces exactly the wrong conclusion.
The second reason is structural and it is almost universal. Floors and lighting and a new reception desk all photograph. Ventilation does not, so it is the line that moves when the budget tightens near the end. A studio comes out of a renovation looking transformed with its air unchanged - and air was usually the problem that started the whole thing. A good fit-out can even make it worse, because tighter doors and better glazing remove the accidental ventilation the old building was getting away with.
And the third: scope follows what customers see, so the chemical store's shelving stayed, the compressor room was untouched, the drains are the same drains and the old extraction ducting was reused because it works. Those are the things that carried the smell through. Date your fit-out, open everything, and give it six to eight weeks before concluding anything - that is the cheapest advice on this page. Do not put a register over a curing epoxy floor. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 or Vaayu at ₹11,999 once a Monday morning smells of nothing. The bay, the booth and the chemical store are never scented.I make no claim that any of it affects reviews, referrals, ticket size or repeat business. It works alongside extraction, ventilation and cleaning, never instead of them. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my detailing studio still smell like a workshop after renovation?
Usually because the renovation added sources of its own. Epoxy floor coating, paint, new MDF and plywood joinery, adhesives, racking and foam all release over weeks, so the building smells worse before it smells better.
How long should I wait before concluding the renovation failed?
Six to eight weeks with real air - open everything and run extraction hard. If the smell survives a weekend with nobody in the building, it is off-gassing rather than work, and time is the main treatment.
What usually gets left out of a renovation?
The air. Floors, lighting, storage and seating all photograph while ventilation does not, so it is the line that moves when the budget tightens - and it was usually the actual problem in the first place.
Can a better fit-out make the smell worse?
Yes. Tighter doors, better glazing and closed-up gaps reduce the accidental air exchange the old building was relying on, and a sealed customer side with no make-up air turns the door to the bay into an inlet.
What carries the old smell through a renovation?
Whatever was kept because it was not in scope: existing shelving in the chemical store, old racking, the compressor room, floor drains, and original extraction ductwork that has had years of solvent-laden air through it.
One per studio, locked at its own level: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999 - 1000m³ on one unit, adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timer, key-lock and auto-stop, under 38dB, waterless with no residue on paint, glass, film or tooling.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified 8 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with a 400ml refillable tank lasting roughly 75-90 days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, operation under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification - electrical and compliance marks, not any kind of safety or health approval. Being waterless it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on paint, glass, film or equipment; refill supply should be confirmed with SOSA. The SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) is an HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to 3,000m³, roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft, with an 800ml reservoir, metal body, programmable schedules and operation under 42dB. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is a 500ml water-based ultrasonic diffuser for a single room of roughly 270-320 sq ft, and the SOSA Boond (₹899) is its compact equivalent; both use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (15ml from ₹299, 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799), which is made for ultrasonic diffusers and is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA reed diffusers - Morning Freshness (₹749 / ₹1,249) and Mountain Breeze (₹849 / ₹1,349), or the two together as the Fresh & Grounded duo (₹1,548 / ₹2,548) - are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with a 50ml bottle lasting 6-8 weeks and a 130ml bottle 14-18 weeks; 300ml and 500ml refills are ₹2,399 and ₹3,499. For the vehicle itself, the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a cordless rechargeable waterless car and travel diffuser, 20ml, cold diffusion with no water and no heat, up to 10 hours continuous or 30 hours intermittent per charge, three speeds and a 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer; SOSA hanging and spray car perfumes are ₹449-₹549 for 12ml and ₹1,499 for a 50ml spray, and the Car Perfume Sprays Discovery Set is ₹699-₹799. Ambient fragrance is an interior and hospitality decision only. It does not remove, neutralise, oxidise or reduce solvent vapour, isocyanates, adhesive off-gassing, particulates or any other chemical in the air, and it does not purify air. SOSA makes no claim that it affects reviews, referrals, ticket size, retention or spend. It is never a substitute for local exhaust ventilation, general ventilation, cleaning, correct chemical storage or the personal protective equipment a studio's own safety assessment requires - a studio that smells of solvent has a source-control problem to fix first, and masking that smell removes a signal staff rely on. Working bays, spray booths, cure areas and chemical stores are left unscented. Where a customer or a member of staff is sensitive to fragrance the correct response is to reduce or switch off. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
