Because skin is part of the composition. Three things about yours - pH, oil level and temperature - change which parts of a fragrance are amplified, and powdery musks are among the most sensitive materials to all three.
Quick answers — read this first
Why do fragrances differ between people? Skin pH, oil level and temperature all change how materials release. The same bottle is genuinely a different fragrance on two people.

Which materials vary most? Musks and ambers - which is exactly why the soapy-versus-skin question is so person-dependent.

What should I do? Test on your own skin for three hours. A 3ml at ₹379 makes that cheap; reviews cannot help you here.
The short answer
Clean is an effect, not a family. It comes from three things together: a bright citrus-green top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin.
The non-negotiable. No sugar. Sweetness is the single thing that stops a fragrance reading as clean, and it is in most "fresh" bottles. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here. For clean, Adaa 3ml at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition I make.
What actually creates a "clean" impression (illustrative)Clean white musk base — the skin-like effect that lastsCitrus and green top — the fresh impression, first 40 minutesSugar or heavy florals — where "clean" stops reading as clean
Illustrative only. Clean is an effect rather than a fragrance family: a bright citrus-green opening gives the first impression, and a clean white musk base is what still reads as clean at hour four.

Straight answer
So why does a perfume smell soapy on you and fresh on someone else?
Because your skin is part of the composition. Three variables do most of the work. pH: more acidic skin amplifies sharper facets and can push a musk toward powder. Oil level: oily skin holds and amplifies base notes, so a powdery musk that stays quiet on dry skin can dominate. Temperature: warmer skin accelerates everything, arriving at the base sooner. Musks are among the most sensitive materials to all three - which is precisely why soapiness is the most person-dependent complaint in fragrance.
Short version: your skin is an ingredient. Which is why a review of a musky fragrance tells you almost nothing.

The 3 skin variables

This is the most-asked question in fragrance and the most honestly answerable, because the mechanisms are well understood.

What "clean" actually means
Clean is not a fragrance family - it is an effect, produced by a specific combination: bright citrus and green materials on top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume. Remove any one of those three and the effect collapses.
1
Criterion one
Skin pH
More acidic skin tends to amplify sharper, brighter facets and can push a musk toward its powdery side; more neutral skin lets it sit transparent. This varies between people and also within one person - diet, medication and stress all shift it, which is why a familiar bottle can occasionally behave oddly.
2
Criterion two
Oil level
Oily skin holds fragrance longer and amplifies base notes, because there is more for the materials to bind to and more warmth driving them. A powdery musk that is barely perceptible on dry skin can be the dominant impression on oily skin. Dry skin has the opposite problem - it holds poorly and the fragrance fades early.

My one pick
Only your skin can answer this: Adaa, 3ml, ₹379.
Shop Adaa - from ₹379 →
3
Criterion three
Temperature
Warmer skin accelerates the whole development, so you arrive at the base sooner and stay there longer. Anyone who runs warm will meet a soapy dry-down earlier than someone who does not, from the same bottle on the same day.
4
Criterion four
Which is why you must test
No review, and no friend's recommendation, can tell you what a musk-based fragrance will do on you. This is the single strongest argument for a real small size, and it is why a 3ml at ₹379 is a better purchase than any amount of research.
The buying checklist
The criteria - and how to check each one yourself
What to look for Why it matters for a clean scent How to check
Clean white musk base This is what still reads as clean at hour four What is the base note?
No sugar anywhere Sweetness is what breaks the clean effect Check for vanilla, tonka, amber
Bright citrus-green top Gives the first fresh impression Bergamot, neroli, cardamom?
A real anchor under the citrus Citrus alone is gone in 40 minutes What holds the brightness?
Close projection Clean is a close-range effect Does it sit near the skin?
Oil base, no alcohol No sting, no sharp evaporation Ask: alcohol-free? DPG-free?
Small dose Over-applying destroys the clean effect One dab, not two
Stated longevity Clean should not mean short Hours on skin, in writing
"Your skin is an ingredient. That is why someone else's review is not evidence."

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better

Adaa gets more divided feedback than anything else I make, and this is why. The composition is close enough to skin that skin gets a vote.

The honest position
No review can answer this. Only your skin can.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: a transparent musk that is less prone to the powdery shift than most, and a real 3ml that makes testing on your own skin inexpensive. Where another house might suit you better: any house selling a genuine small size lets you run the same test - the method matters more than the brand.
Three things "clean fragrance" advice gets wrong
✕
"Clean means weak." It does not. Clean is about the materials - no sugar, clean musk, bright top - not about strength. A clean fragrance can last eight hours and still read as skin.
✕
"All fresh fragrances smell the same." Most of the cheap ones do, because they lean on the same handful of inexpensive fresh materials. The difference is what sits underneath - real cardamom and neroli, or nothing.
✕
"Clean is boring." Only when it is thin. A clean composition with real material is quietly interesting all day - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee.

Stop reading reviews of musky fragrances and buy a 3ml instead. Adaa is where I would start.

A note from Sonal

"I just want to smell clean" is the single most common thing anyone says to me, and it is a harder brief than it sounds - because clean is not a fragrance family. It is an effect, and it takes three things at once: a bright citrus-green opening, a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume, and no sugar anywhere.

That third condition is why so many bottles sold as fresh do not stay clean. Sweetness is inexpensive and it tests well at a counter, so it finds its way into almost everything - and by hour three you are wearing something that announces itself as perfume rather than as a person who is well-groomed.

Adaa is the only genuinely clean thing I make, and I would rather say that plainly than stretch the word across my whole range. I do not make an aquatic and I do not make a standalone white musk. If those are what you want, buy them from someone who does - and if a clean citrus-green-musk is what you are after, mine is worth your ₹379.

Frequently asked questions

Is Adaa soapy?
No, and that is deliberate. Soapiness comes from aldehydes and powdery musks; Adaa uses a transparent clean musk with green cardamom and neroli over it, which reads as clean skin rather than as a bar of soap.
Which SOSA attar smells cleanest?
Adaa - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition in the range; Ameeri is warm, Mastani is rich and Nawaab is deep, and I would not sell any of them as fresh. From ₹379.
Does "clean" mean the fragrance is weak?
No. Clean is a property of the materials - no sugar, a clean musk base, a bright top - not of the strength. SOSA attars wear 6-8 hours on skin, and the clean effect lasts as long as the scent does because the musk base is what creates it.
Why do so many fresh perfumes smell the same?
Because the inexpensive route to freshness uses a small set of the same synthetic materials, with very little underneath them. The difference between one clean fragrance and another shows up at hour two, not at the counter - so test on skin and wait.
How long does a clean attar last on skin?
6-8 hours for the SOSA range, slightly longer on warm or oily skin. The citrus impression fades within the first hour; what remains, and what still reads as clean, is the musk base.
