Founder Diaries · Gifting · The Safe Choice
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
There are five reed compositions in the range and, for a recipient whose taste you genuinely cannot guess, only two of them matter. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the default, and Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the hedge — and the reason I can be that blunt is that the population of people you might be buying for splits along one line, not many. Some people accept a soft floral in their home. Some people reject anything that smells sweet or "perfumed". Those two bottles sit on opposite sides of that line and between them they cover nearly everybody, which is the entire content of this page.
Quick answers — read this first
The default: Garden Bloom, ₹799 for 50ml — British rose and night-blooming jasmine, 8.9 on SOSA's internal strength scale. It reads as hotel hospitality to most Indian households, which is what you want from a gift that has to survive a home you have never entered.

The hedge: Mountain Breeze, ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, 9.4, with no sweetness at all. This is the bottle for anyone who has ever called a scented product silly, and for most men who say they dislike fragrance.

The one question that decides it: would this person describe a rose-scented room as pleasant, or as too much? If you do not know, ask whoever introduced you to them. Thirty seconds of asking beats any amount of guessing.

Don't buy either if: they have said they dislike scented things, there is a newborn, a pregnancy, an asthmatic or a migraine sufferer in the house, they live in a single small sealed room, or they already own two or three. Then give something else — good coffee, a proper olive oil, plain linen, or a voucher they redeem to their own taste.
The short answer
Short answer: gift Garden Bloom at ₹799 unless you have a specific reason to think the recipient rejects floral or sweet fragrance, in which case gift Mountain Breeze at ₹849. Choose 50ml for 6–8 weeks or 130ml at ₹1,299–₹1,349 for 14–18. That is the whole decision, and adding more options to it makes the outcome worse rather than better.
The mechanism: the only fragrance signal most people broadcast without being asked is whether they find scented things pleasant or faintly ridiculous. It shows up in offhand remarks, in whether they burn incense, in whether their car has anything hanging from the mirror. That single signal is enough to choose between a soft floral and a dry woody, and those two registers between them are acceptable to the overwhelming majority of homes.
Shop: Garden Bloom ₹799 / 50ml, ₹1,299 / 130ml. Mountain Breeze ₹849 / 50ml, ₹1,349 / 130ml. If a single bottle feels too small a gesture, a duo set is ₹1,498–₹1,598 for 2 × 50ml. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Which SOSA reed diffuser should you gift when you have no idea what they like?
1. Start with Garden Bloom at ₹799. British rose over night-blooming jasmine, sitting at 8.9 on our internal strength scale — presence without insistence. Rose and jasmine are so ordinary in Indian domestic life that they arrive as hospitality rather than as an opinion, and a gift that arrives without an opinion is exactly what you want when you have no information.

2. Switch to Mountain Breeze at ₹849 on one signal. If the recipient is the sort of person who calls scented candles silly, who has never bought anything perfumed for their home, or who simply does not care for florals, the dry register is the answer: Himalayan pine, clarifying sage and Indian cedar, no sweetness anywhere, 9.4 on the scale. It reads as a material rather than as a fragrance, and that is why it reaches people who reject the whole category.

3. Ask one person, not five. A sibling, a spouse, the colleague who introduced you. "Do they like anything scented at home?" answers the question in half a minute and is not a strange thing to ask. Also ask whether anybody in the house has asthma or a very young baby, because that is the one answer that stops the purchase entirely.

4. Choose size for duration, never for strength. A 130ml at ₹1,299–₹1,349 lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml, and at the same six reeds it projects about the same. Buy the larger bottle if you want the gift to still be working when you next visit. Do not buy it believing the recipient will notice a bigger presence, because they will not.

5. Use a duo when a single bottle feels thin. Two scents for two rooms reads as a decision rather than as something picked up in passing. Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 pairs Garden Bloom with Fresh Brew; Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 pairs Mountain Breeze with Morning Freshness. An honest note: the two safest bottles are not sold together as a set, so if you want both you buy them separately at ₹799 and ₹849.

6. And know when to leave the category. If there is a stated dislike of fragrance, a newborn, a pregnancy, an asthmatic, a single sealed room, or three diffusers already on their shelves, buy something else without hesitating. A single-estate coffee, a good tea, a jar of proper honey, plain linen napkins or a voucher they spend themselves are all genuinely better gifts in those situations.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: Garden Bloom ₹799 by default. Mountain Breeze ₹849 if they reject floral or sweet. 130ml from ₹1,299 if you want 14–18 weeks rather than 6–8 — longer, not louder. Duo sets ₹1,498–₹1,598 when one bottle feels too small a gesture.
SOSA Garden Bloom British rose and night-blooming jasmine reed diffuser gift
The default when you know nothing
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose & night-blooming jasmine ₹799 / 50ml
The bottle I hand people when they tell me they are buying for somebody they have met twice. Rose and night-blooming jasmine at 8.9 on our internal scale, which is deliberately below the loudest things we make — it should be noticed at the door and then settle into the background rather than following anybody around the flat. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT base that holds through 45°C summers rather than turning acrid. 130ml ₹1,299 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — why two bottles cover what five cannot

It seems generous to offer somebody the full range and let them choose. In gifting it is the opposite of helpful, because the person choosing is you, working from almost no information, and every extra option is another way to be wrong. The right structure for a blind choice is not a menu; it is a fork. One question, two answers, done. What follows is why these two particular bottles form that fork, and why the other three — all of which I am proud of — carry risks that only make sense when you know the recipient.

1
THE DEFAULT
Garden Bloom, because it reads as a place rather than a person
A gifted fragrance has to pass a test no personal fragrance ever faces: it must be acceptable to everyone in the house, including people who did not receive it. Rose and jasmine pass that test more often than anything else I make, because in India they are not exotic — they are the smell of a wedding, a temple courtyard, a good hotel lobby, a neighbour's garden at nine at night. They arrive as hospitality, which is a register nobody argues with. The 8.9 rating matters too. It is not the loudest thing we make and it should not be, because loudness is the second most common reason a gifted fragrance gets moved to a spare room. Presence at the door, quiet by the sofa.
The rule: when in doubt, give the fragrance that sounds like a place. Places are shared; personalities are not.
2
THE HEDGE
Mountain Breeze, because some people reject the whole category
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849 · 9.5, the fullestThere is a substantial group of people — disproportionately, though not exclusively, men — who have decided that scented products are frivolous, and who will file a floral diffuser under things bought for them by somebody who does not know them. Mountain Breeze reaches them because it does not smell like a fragrance product; it smells like a material. Dry Himalayan pine over clarifying sage and deodar cedar, no vanilla, no sugar, nothing round. At 9.4 it is nearly the loudest thing in the range and yet it is almost never described as strong, because dryness reads as restraint. This is the bottle for the father-in-law, the boss with the very plain office, the friend who owns four identical grey shirts. It is also excellent in a study or a home office, which is where it tends to end up.
The tell: if you cannot imagine them buying a scented candle for themselves, this is the bottle. Not the floral.
3
THE OTHER THREE
Why Fresh Brew, Morning Freshness and Evening Calm need knowledge
Fresh Brew at ₹849 is the most loved thing we make and the fullest presence in the range at 9.5, which is exactly why it needs a room you can vouch for — coffee and vanilla in a large living room is a welcome; in a studio flat or a bedroom it is a lot. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is bright, cold and anti-floral at 9.0, superb for a kitchen, bathroom or home office and slightly functional in a drawing room — give it when you know which room it is for. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the softest thing in the range and, to me, one of the loveliest — but lavender carries more personal memory than any other material here, restful for one person and medicinal for the next. All three are better gifts than either of the safe two, for a recipient you actually know. None of them are better for a recipient you do not.

Part two — the coverage map: what you can observe, and what it points to

You almost never know somebody's fragrance taste. You very often know one or two things about how they live, and that is enough. This table runs from the things you can observe without asking to the bottle each observation points at, with a fallback for when your reading of them turns out to be wrong.

Observation to bottle
Buying from the little you actually know
What you can observe What it tells you Give If you have misread them Size Price
Nothing at all — you have met twice ★ No signal either way; default to hospitality Garden Bloom They dislike florals — the only real miss 50ml ₹799
They have joked about scented things Category rejection, not taste Mountain Breeze They find it austere; no real offence caused 50ml ₹849
Their home is minimal, pale, uncluttered They will judge the object as well as the smell Mountain Breeze, or Bloom in 130ml Neither — both are plain glass and pale reeds Either ₹849 / ₹1,299
They host often; the living room is large Room volume can carry more presence Garden Bloom 130ml, or the Warmth & Bloom duo Too quiet for the space — they can add reeds 130ml or duo ₹1,299 / ₹1,598
Small flat, or you know it is one room Dose matters more than character Garden Bloom 50ml at 8.9 They wanted more — reed count is their control 50ml only ₹799
They work from home in a single room The bottle will live on a desk or a shelf beside one Mountain Breeze Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the alternative 50ml ₹849
A new home, still smelling of paint and packing They need the room changed, not decorated Either safe bottle; Morning Freshness also works None — anything is an improvement here 50ml or 130ml From ₹749
The honest caveat: the two safest bottles in the range are not sold together as a duo. The duo sets pair Garden Bloom with Fresh Brew (Warmth & Bloom, ₹1,598) and Mountain Breeze with Morning Freshness (Fresh & Grounded, ₹1,548). If you want Bloom and Mountain together you buy two bottles at ₹799 and ₹849 — which is a perfectly good gift, just not a boxed one. I would rather tell you that than sell you the nearest set and let you find out.

The fork, and the way to give both sides of it
The SOSA principle
You cannot observe their taste. You can nearly always observe whether they think fragrance is for people like them.
That single observation is worth more than any list of favourite notes, because it is the one thing people reveal without being asked — and it is the only input the fork needs.

Part three — when neither bottle is the right gift

A two-bottle answer is only useful if it also knows its own edges. Don't buy this if the person has told you they dislike scented things — not the joke about candles, but an actual statement. Believe it. Don't buy this if there is a newborn in the house, a pregnancy in progress, or anybody living there with asthma, chemical sensitivity or scent-triggered migraine; a constant background fragrance is a decision for the people who breathe it, and it is not yours to take. Reed oil must also be kept away from children and pets, which is worth thinking about in a home with a crawling baby or a cat that chews. Don't buy this if the home is a single small sealed room — a hostel room, a studio with no cross-ventilation — where a constant release accumulates rather than disperses. Don't buy this if you know they already own several, which in an Indian festive season is more likely than people expect. And don't buy this if the occasion needs a gift that performs when it is opened, because a bottle and six reeds is a quiet thing in a room full of people.

In those situations the honest alternatives are ordinary and good. A single-estate coffee or a properly sourced tea. A jar of real honey or a bottle of good olive oil, both of which assume nothing more than that the recipient eats. Plain white linen napkins, which match every table ever made and improve everyday meals rather than special ones. A restaurant or bookshop voucher, which hands the taste decision back to the only person qualified to make it. A hardy plant, if you are comfortable also handing over a small permanent responsibility. And when the recipient's real problem is that they want scent on demand — a strong room fifteen minutes before guests arrive — no reed diffuser will do it, and a Sukoon at ₹1,899, with a remote and timers, is the honest recommendation instead.

One last edge, inside the range. If you happen to know the recipient loves oud, musk or an aquatic marine register, this range does not have those and I will not stretch the nearest thing to cover it. The reed line is five compositions: two florals, one bright citrus, one dry woody and one gourmand. That is what it is, and pretending otherwise would produce exactly the sort of gift this page exists to prevent — technically correct, quietly wrong.

Two bottles and one question. Every extra option you add is another way to be wrong.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — the safe-gift edit, by what you want to spend

The same two bottles at every price people actually spend, plus the honest note about what each step up does and does not buy you.

The safe-bottle edit
What each budget buys, and what it does not

Honest notes for buyers: SOSA does not currently offer a gift card, so the choice cannot be handed to the recipient. Gift wrapping, gift notes and direct-to-recipient shipping are not something I can confirm from this page — check the live checkout rather than assuming. What arrives is a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds. Strength figures — Garden Bloom 8.9, Mountain Breeze 9.4 — are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds in an ordinary Indian room, not an industry standard and not a concentration; a higher number is louder, not better. The range has no oud, no musk-forward scent and no aquatic. Replacement reeds are not sold separately, and refills are oil only. Reed oil never goes into a Sukoon or Boond, and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Keep both away from children and pets, and mention the tray — the oil marks wood and stone. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Himalayan pine sage and Indian cedar reed diffuser gift
The hedge, for the person who rejects the category
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
The bottle that reaches people who have decided fragrance is not for them. There is no sweetness in it anywhere — pine and deodar cedar over clarifying sage, dry the whole way through, which is why it is read as a material rather than as a scented product. At 9.4 it is nearly the loudest thing we make and is almost never called strong, because dryness reads as restraint. It belongs in a study, a home office, a library corner or a bedroom, and it is my standing answer for fathers-in-law, plain-spoken bosses and anyone who owns four identical shirts. 130ml ₹1,349 for 14–18 weeks.

A note from Sonal

When somebody writes to ask which bottle to gift, I do not send them the range. I ask one question — would this person find a rose-scented room lovely or ridiculous? — and then I name a bottle. Narrowing the choice is the service; presenting the whole shelf is just moving the difficulty back to the person who has the least information. Nearly everyone who takes the two-bottle answer reports back that it was fine, which is the outcome a gift should aim for.

I am aware that a perfumer recommending the same two products to everybody sounds like laziness. It is the opposite. Garden Bloom is composed to be the least assertive floral I know how to make, and Mountain Breeze is composed to carry real presence with nothing sweet in it at all, precisely so that the two of them between them can cover a population. That was the brief for both, years before this page existed.

And if the answer to my one question is "she has told me she hates all of this", then buy her a very good coffee and we will both be pleased. Everything we make is composed and handmade in Pune, tested through 45°C summers and 85% monsoon humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Which SOSA reed diffuser is safest to gift when you don't know their taste?
Garden Bloom at ₹799 for 50ml — rose and night-blooming jasmine at 8.9 on our internal scale, which most households read as hotel hospitality rather than as a personal perfume. Switch to Mountain Breeze at ₹849 if there is any sign that the recipient rejects floral or sweet fragrance.
What should I gift a man who says he doesn't like scented things?
Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, with no sweetness in it at all. It reads as a material rather than a fragrance, which is why it reaches people who have written off the category. It is also the right register for a study or home office, which is usually where it ends up. ₹849 for 50ml, ₹1,349 for 130ml.
Should I buy the 50ml or the 130ml as a gift?
50ml at ₹799–₹849 runs six to eight weeks; 130ml at ₹1,299–₹1,349 runs fourteen to eighteen. Choose the larger one if you want the gift still working at the next visit, not because you expect it to smell stronger — at the same six reeds the two project about the same. Size buys duration, never volume.
Can I gift Garden Bloom and Mountain Breeze together as a set?
Not as a boxed set — the two safest bottles are not paired in the duo range, and I would rather say so than sell you the nearest thing. The duos are Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 (Bloom with Fresh Brew) and Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 (Mountain Breeze with Morning Freshness). Buying the two bottles separately at ₹799 and ₹849 works perfectly well.
What if the gift turns out to be too quiet for their room?
Reed count is the recipient's own volume control and it is free: six reeds is the calibrated setting every strength rating refers to, and adding two or three raises presence noticeably while shortening the bottle roughly in proportion. Placement matters as much — near a doorway at waist to chest height, out of direct sun and a few feet from an AC vent. Worth mentioning when you hand it over.
