Why does height matter? Because air moves through the upper part of a room. A source at floor level in still air produces a pool around itself rather than distributing through the space.
Why keep it away from an air conditioner? Because a strong directed airstream carries everything in one direction, producing a gradient rather than an even level, and pushes material onto the surfaces downstream of it.
Six placement rules, and three of them are about air
At 2,000 square feet, placement is worth more than capacity, and it is the cheapest improvement available because it costs nothing. Most units in most homes are in the wrong place, and they are in the wrong place for a small number of repeated reasons. Rule one is height, and it is the most commonly broken. Air in a room circulates predominantly through its upper portion, driven by temperature differences, fans and movement. A source placed at floor level, particularly in a corner or in still air, produces a pool of fragrance around itself instead of distributing through the space. The practical consequence is a machine that seems weak everywhere except within a metre of itself, which is exactly the symptom people misdiagnose as insufficient capacity and try to fix by buying something larger. Moving the same unit to a console, side table or shelf frequently resolves it entirely. Rule two is about which room, and it follows from how perception actually works. Everybody who lives in a home has adapted to it and perceives very little of its background, which means the value of the layer is concentrated at arrival - the moment somebody walks in from outside with an unadapted nose. The unit should therefore serve the space people walk into, not the space where a mains socket happens to be. This matters because socket positions were determined years earlier by an electrician thinking about lamps, televisions and chargers, and letting that decision drive placement is the same error that makes plug-in fresheners perform so poorly: they end up low on a wall behind a sofa or a console, treating a small pocket of air nobody occupies. Rule three is air conditioning, and it is the rule most specific to Indian homes. A split unit produces a strong directed airstream, and anything released into that stream is carried in one direction at speed. The result is a pronounced gradient rather than a level: strong along the path of the air, weak everywhere else, with material depositing on whatever soft surfaces sit downstream. Keep the source out of the direct throw. It does not need to be far - a metre or two to the side, or on the opposite side of a seating area, is usually enough - but it should not be in the stream. Rule four is open windows, and it is stated because it is common rather than because it is subtle. A source near an open window, or in the path of cross-ventilation between two open windows, is being carried outside continuously. In a naturally ventilated home this is worth thinking about at the level of timing too: build the level with the windows shut in the half hour before people come home, then open up, rather than running against an open house all day. Rule five is the dining area, and it is a refusal rather than an optimisation. Taste is very largely smell, so an ambient register at the table competes directly with food somebody spent the afternoon cooking, and the better the fragrance the more damage it does. Do not aim a unit at a dining table, and if the dining area is part of the main connected volume, run the cycle so that it finishes before food is served rather than continuing through the meal. Rule six is the kitchen, which gets nothing at any time. Cooking smell is not a smell in the air that can be balanced by another smell; it is aerosolised oil that travels through the house and settles into soft furnishings in other rooms, where it releases slowly for days. It is an extraction problem. Using the extraction every time, at full speed, with the kitchen door shut where one exists, does more for how a 2,000 square foot home smells than any placement decision on this page. Two notes on the rest of the setup. Reeds follow the same rules where they apply: console height rather than floor level or the back of a shelf, out of a direct airstream, away from an open window, and never on a dining table. And rooms behind closed doors are placement-independent as far as the machine is concerned - they need their own source, typically five to seven reeds in a home this size, with bedrooms carrying the lightest level in the house from something the occupant can move or cap themselves.
Where it goes, and where it must not
Where it goes, and where it must not. The main connected volume, at console or table height in the space people actually walk into: the SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank, or the SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,799 for a more compact main space. Keep it out of the direct throw of an air conditioner, which carries everything one way and deposits it downstream; a metre or two to the side is usually enough. Keep it away from an open window or a cross-ventilation path, and in a naturally ventilated home build the level with windows shut in the half hour before people come home, then open up. Never aim it at the dining table, and where the dining area shares the main volume, let the cycle finish before food is served. Never anything in the kitchen at any time, since cooking smell is aerosolised oil requiring extraction rather than competition. Every room behind a closed door, which is placement-independent as far as the machine is concerned: one reed each, typically five to seven in a home this size - Morning Freshness at Rs 749, Garden Bloom at Rs 799, Evening Calm at Rs 799, Fresh Brew at Rs 849, Mountain Breeze at Rs 849 - three to four months per bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. Bedrooms take the lightest level in the house from a source the occupant can move or cap. Entrance: a reed or the SOSA Boond at Rs 799, permanent rather than scheduled. Reeds follow the same rules where they apply: console height rather than the floor or the back of a shelf, out of a direct airstream, away from an open window, and never on a dining table. Not this home: the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, rated for up to 1,000 m², roughly 10,700 square feet. Fragrance for machines: Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, at three to six drops per tank, rinsing between scents, and it is not reed diffuser oil. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards.

Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
