Reach for a stronger fragrance when the space asks for it - bigger or draughty rooms, entryways where people arrive, and when you are entertaining. The move is twofold: choose a woodier, more substantial scent like the St. Regis-inspired amber or the 1 Hotels-inspired cedar and vetiver, and give it more presence with a few extra drops or a larger diffuser. Strength is about matching the scent to the room, not overpowering it.
Quick answers — read this first
When do I need a stronger scent? In bigger or draughty rooms, entryways, and when entertaining - anywhere the air moves or the space is large enough to thin a light scent out.

How do I make a scent stronger? Two honest levers: pick a woodier, more substantial fragrance, and give it more presence - a few more drops of water-based fragrance, or a larger diffuser like Megh.

Which scents carry best? Woodier, ambery ones - the St. Regis-inspired amber and the 1 Hotels-inspired cedar and vetiver carry further than delicate citrus in a big or moving-air room.
The short answer
Big rooms: living rooms and open plans - use a larger unit like Megh and a woody scent.
Draughty spaces: moving air thins scent; go woodier and add a few more drops.
Entryways: make the first impression count with a substantial, welcoming scent.
Entertaining: a bolder presence reads as generous - the W Hotels or St. Regis styles.

Straight answer
When should I use stronger fragrances?
When the space demands presence: bigger or open-plan rooms, draughty spaces where moving air thins a scent out, entryways where the fragrance sets the first impression, and when you are entertaining and want the room to feel generous. The way to do it honestly is to reach for a woodier, more substantial scent - the St. Regis-inspired amber, or the 1 Hotels-inspired cedar and vetiver - and to give it more presence with a few extra drops of water-based fragrance or a larger diffuser like Megh. Stronger should mean well-matched to the room, not overpowering.

When a room asks for more

Strength is not a virtue in itself - a scent that overpowers a small bedroom is a mistake, not a triumph. But some spaces really do need more presence, and reading which is the perfumer's job. Here are the ones that do.

Why some rooms need more
Scent spreads by diffusion and air movement. A large volume of air dilutes a fragrance; a draught carries it away before it settles. Both mean a light scent that is perfect in a snug room simply disappears in a big or breezy one - so you match the scent, and its presence, to the space.

Bigger rooms. An open-plan living-dining space has far more air to fill than a bedroom. A delicate citrus vanishes; a woodier, ambery scent holds together and carries. This is where the Megh, with its 6-litre tank and adjustable mist dial, does the heavy lifting a small desk unit cannot.

Draughty spaces. Ceiling fans, open windows, cross-breezes - moving air is scent's enemy. It does not just dilute the fragrance, it whisks it away. In these rooms a substantial, woody scent and a few extra drops keep something present rather than fleeting.

The instinct is to fix a weak scent by adding a stronger raw oil. Please do not - raw essential and carrier oils are thick and clog the ultrasonic plate. The clean way to add strength is more drops of the water-based fragrance, a woodier scent choice, or a bigger diffuser. Same result, no damage.

Entryways. The hall or entrance is where a home introduces itself. A substantial, welcoming scent here - think a hotel lobby - greets people before they have taken their shoes off. It is worth spending a little more presence on the first thing anyone smells.

Entertaining. When guests are over, a slightly bolder scent reads as generous and considered. The W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar (citrus, pepper, amber) or the St. Regis-inspired amber fill a busy, talkative room where a whisper-soft scent would be lost.

How to build presence, cleanly

There are three honest levers, and none of them involves thick raw oils.

Lever What it does
Woodier scent choice Amber, cedar and vetiver carry further than delicate citrus.
A few more drops More water-based fragrance per fill lifts the throw - cleanly.
A larger diffuser Megh (6L) moves far more scented mist than a desk unit.
Higher mist setting Where the unit allows, more mist means more scent in the air.

My scent picks for presence are the ones with weight to them: the St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour (amber, violet, woods), the 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves), and the W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar for something brighter but still bold. These are our own interpretations of those hotel styles - inspired by, not affiliated with, the hotels named.

Myth: "A stronger scent needs a stronger oil."
Reality: strength comes from scent choice, drop count and diffuser size - not from thickening the liquid. Raw oils do not make a room smell more, they make a plate stop working.

And a limit worth naming: even in a big room, aim for well-matched, not overwhelming. A scent you notice and enjoy on walking in is the goal; one that makes eyes water has gone too far. Build presence deliberately, then stop.

Stronger is not louder - it is well-matched. Fill a big room with a woody scent and a bigger diffuser, not with a thicker oil.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use stronger fragrances in a diffuser?
In bigger or draughty rooms, in entryways, and when entertaining - spaces where a large volume of air or moving air thins a light scent out. Reach for a woodier scent like the St. Regis-inspired amber and give it more presence with extra drops or a larger diffuser.
How do I make my diffuser scent stronger?
Choose a woodier, more substantial fragrance, add a few more drops of water-based fragrance per fill, use a larger diffuser like Megh, or raise the mist setting. Never add raw essential or carrier oils to strengthen it - they clog the plate.
Which scents carry best in a large room?
Woodier, ambery ones. The St. Regis-inspired amber and the 1 Hotels-inspired cedar and vetiver hold together and carry further than delicate citrus, which tends to disappear in a big or draughty space.
What diffuser is best for a large or draughty room?
Megh - a 6-litre tank with an adjustable mist dial, made to scent and humidify a living room or open-plan space for hours. A small desk unit like Boond cannot fill that much air, however strong the scent.
Can I use more drops of fragrance to increase strength?
Yes - a few more drops of SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance per fill is a clean, safe way to lift the throw. Just keep it enjoyable rather than overwhelming, and never substitute or mix in raw oils, which damage the plate.
