By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles8 min readUpdated August 2026
Most scent marketing is sold on the fragrance and bought on the equipment, and the questions that actually determine whether it works are asked by almost nobody. Here are ten, including two that a supplier's answer will tell you more about them than about the product.
Quick answers — read this first
What should you ask a scent marketing supplier before buying? Ten things: coverage in cubic metres and at what setting, what happens to enclosed rooms, consumable availability over years, daily staff requirement, HVAC dependence, placement guidance, refill schedule basis, what happens if the date or the space changes, how the level is calibrated, and what they will not claim the system does.
What is the most revealing question to ask a scent supplier? What will you not claim this does. A supplier who has a clear list - no direct sales effect, no fix for an odour source, no substitute for ventilation - is describing a real product. One who claims the system does everything is describing a sales position.
Why ask about consumable availability? Because a store signature depends on holding one register for years, and a supplier whose range is refreshed frequently will eventually discontinue the one you built on - forcing exactly the reset the exercise was meant to avoid. Continuity of the consumable is part of the equipment decision.
The short answer
Short answer: ten questions: coverage in cubic metres and at what setting, enclosed-room provision, consumable availability over years, daily staff requirement, HVAC dependence, placement guidance, refill schedule basis, adaptability, calibration method, and what the supplier will not claim. The last is the most revealing. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for showrooms to ~1000m³; small-store systems from ₹1,799; HVAC from ₹25,999.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
What should we be asking before we commit to a system?
Ten, and the last two matter most. 1. What volume does this cover, in cubic metres, and at what setting? Square feet is unusable in jewellery, where ceiling heights vary enormously. A figure quoted without a stated volume and setting is not a specification. 2. What happens to my enclosed rooms? Air does not cross a closed door. Any answer suggesting a floor unit will handle consultation rooms is wrong. 3. Will this register still be available in five years? A signature depends on holding one scent for years; a range refreshed for merchandising reasons will eventually force the reset you were avoiding. 4. What does it need from my staff, daily? A daily fill is a daily failure point on a jewellery floor. The right answer is nothing daily. 5. Does it need ducting? A large share of Indian jewellery retail cannot integrate with HVAC. 6. Where exactly should it go in my space? A supplier who will not discuss placement against your outlets and air movement is selling a box. 7. What is the refill schedule based on? It should be built against your volume, setting and trading hours, not quoted as a generic interval. 8. What happens if my layout changes? Refits create dead corners; the answer should be a walk-through and a patch rather than a bigger unit. 9. How is the level set? The correct answer involves an unadapted nose from outside, not a staff opinion. 10. What will you not claim this does? This is the revealing one. A real answer sounds like: it will not increase sales directly, it will not fix an odour source, it is not a substitute for ventilation, and it does nothing for a store whose fundamentals are weak. A supplier with no such list is describing a sales position rather than a product. Our own answers: Vaayu ₹11,999 up to roughly 1000 cubic metres, HVAC-independent, nothing daily, rooms from ₹799, refills from ₹999 on a schedule built against your specification. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The ten questions
The three areas the questions cover - the physical specification, the decade, and the honesty test.
Why this works
Ten questions, and two that reveal the supplier
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
Four of the ten questions establish whether a supplier is specifying against your building or selling a product with a number attached. Coverage in cubic metres at a stated setting is the foundation, because a square-foot figure is meaningless across a format whose ceiling heights range from eight feet to twenty, and a coverage claim without a setting is a claim at maximum output rather than at the whisper calibration a showroom actually needs. Enclosed rooms are the second: a supplier who does not immediately ask how many rooms with doors you have is not thinking about your store, since air does not cross a closed door and consultation rooms are where your decisions happen. HVAC dependence is the third, and it decides more Indian installations than anything else - a large share of jewellery retail occupies older or leased premises where ducting is impossible or not permitted. Placement is the fourth: a supplier willing to discuss positions against your outlet locations, still corners and door traffic is engaging with the problem, while one who ships a box and leaves siting to you has transferred the hardest variable to the least equipped person.
Tip: a coverage figure without a stated volume and setting is a number, not a specification.
2
The decade
Consumable continuity and adaptability
Three questions concern the years after the purchase, which is where the commercial value actually accrues and which almost nobody asks about. Consumable availability is the most important: the entire case for a store signature rests on holding one register long enough for customers to associate it with you, so a supplier whose fragrance range turns over frequently is offering an asset with an expiry date. Ask directly whether the specific register you are choosing is a permanent line, and whether it is available across every unit type you will run - floor system, room units, and any packaging application - since a register available for the main unit but not the small ones breaks continuity exactly where it matters. Refill schedule basis is the second: a schedule built against your volume, setting and trading hours is a real answer, while a generic interval is a guess that will be wrong in either direction. And adaptability is the third: stores change, and the right answer to a layout change is a walk-through and a small patch unit rather than an upsell to a larger system.
3
The honesty test
What will you not claim this does
The final question is worth asking of any supplier in this category and the answer is more informative than anything else in the conversation. A product with real, moderate, well-understood effects has a clear boundary, and a supplier who knows the product can state it without hesitation: ambient scenting does not directly cause purchases, it does not fix an odour source and must never be used to cover one, it is not a substitute for ventilation, it does nothing for a store whose pricing, inventory or service are the actual problem, and its effects are moderate rather than transformative and only operate where decisions are close. A supplier who produces that list is describing something real and is therefore also more likely to be accurate about the things they do claim. A supplier who cannot name a single limitation - for whom the system improves sales, fixes smells, delights every customer and pays for itself in a month - is describing a sales position, and the accuracy of everything else they have said is now unknown. This question costs nothing and it is the closest thing to a due-diligence test available in a category where the effects are genuine but easily overstated.
Tip: a supplier who cannot name one limitation has told you nothing reliable about the things they can do.
The SOSA principle
Ten questions separate a specification from a sale - and the most revealing is what will you not claim this does.
A clear list of limits is the best evidence that the claims either side of it are accurate.

The SOSA jewellery store edit
Whatever kind of jewellery you sell, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the showroom, scheduled so it never depends on a staff member's memory. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own interpretations of the world's finest hotel scents - run across all of them. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
What if a supplier quotes coverage only in square feet?
Ask them to convert it, and ask what ceiling height they assumed. The conversion is trivial - length by width by height - and the assumed height is the information that matters, because a coverage figure calculated at a nine-foot ceiling is substantially wrong for a fourteen-foot showroom and catastrophically wrong for a double-height atrium. If a supplier cannot state the assumed height, the figure was not derived from anything. This is also a useful early signal about how the rest of the specification will go: a supplier working in square feet in a format where ceiling heights vary by a factor of two is applying a general retail template rather than thinking about jewellery specifically, and the same approximation will show up in the room provision and the refill schedule.
Should we ask for a trial before buying?
Yes, and specify what a useful trial looks like rather than accepting a demonstration. A demonstration in a supplier's showroom or from a bottle tells you almost nothing, because a register behaves differently distributed across your volume under your lighting with your air movement. A useful trial runs the candidate register in your actual space, at a working setting, for long enough to settle - several days rather than an hour - and is assessed by people arriving from outside rather than by staff who have adapted. Ask whether that is possible before committing, and ask how the level will be calibrated at the end of it. A supplier confident in the product will generally accommodate this; one who resists is worth asking why.
What should we ask about service and support?
Three practical things. What happens if a unit stops working during trading hours - response time, whether a replacement is available, and who to call. What support exists for a walk-through if the coverage seems wrong after installation, since placement adjustments are the most common post-installation need and should not be an upsell conversation. And what happens at a refit or relocation - whether the system moves with you, which for an HVAC-independent unit it does, and whether the specification will be revisited for the new space. Beyond that, ask who your point of contact is and whether it is a person or a queue, because the practical difference over a decade of refills and adjustments is substantial.
Is it worth asking about other jewellery clients?
Yes, and ask a specific question rather than a general one. Rather than whether they work with jewellery stores, ask what they have learned about jewellery specifically - the answer will reveal whether they understand the format. A supplier who knows this category will mention consultation rooms and the enclosure problem, the billing counter, ceiling height variation, the occasion cycle and recall, and the fact that hour three of a bridal consultation is where the value sits. One who talks only about first impressions and luxury ambience is applying a general retail script. If they can point to comparable installations you can visit or ask about, better still - walking a working installation with your own nose is worth more than any specification sheet.
What are the answers you would give to your own ten questions?
Directly: the Vaayu covers up to roughly 1000 cubic metres at a whisper setting and is HVAC-independent, so it installs in an afternoon in leased or older premises and moves with you. Enclosed rooms take their own units from Rs 799, because air does not cross a closed door. Registers are held as a permanent range across every unit type including packaging applications. Nothing is required daily; timer control means a weekly glance and a monthly walk. Placement is proposed against your floor plan, ceiling heights and outlet positions before purchase. Refill schedules are built against your volume, setting and hours, then corrected from actual consumption. Layout changes are handled with a walk-through and a patch unit. And what we will not claim: it does not directly increase sales, it will not fix or cover an odour source, it is not a substitute for ventilation, and it does nothing for a store whose pricing, inventory or service are the real problem. About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any jewellery brand's systems.
Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
