This is the step people most want to skip and the one that decides everything after it. Fresh paint, tile and joinery adhesives, engineered boards, new foam and new upholstery all release volatile compounds as they cure, and that is the smell of a new interior. It fades with ventilation and time. Cross ventilate daily, run fans, leave every wardrobe, drawer and cabinet open so the inside of the joinery airs, and wash new curtains and bed linen before use. Interiors are handed over half commissioned almost every time. Bulbs get installed in whatever colour temperature the electrician had, so one sightline ends up mixing warm and cool white. Dimmers get wired but never tested against the bulbs actually fitted, which is where flicker comes from. Curtains get hung but do not stack clear of the glass. Dampers are missing on the doors that bang. Spend one afternoon on all of it with a screwdriver and a box of matched bulbs, and the house improves more than the next purchase would.

Set up the upkeep

Spare bulbs of each type so a failure never gets replaced with the wrong colour. Touch-up paint labelled with the room and the batch. Spare tiles from the same lot. Filter sizes written down, AC and chimney service dates in the calendar, and one list of who to call for what. And the honest answer starts with something nobody wants to hear, which is that the best thing you can do for a newly finished home in its first month is open every window in it, every day, and buy nothing at all.
After that the list is short and mostly unglamorous. Commission the light. Fix the doors that bang. Write down what the paint was. Make the entrance work.
