A guest room is the one bedroom in a house occupied by somebody who cannot ask for it to be changed, which is exactly why hotels keep their guest rooms close to neutral and you should too.
Quick answers — read this first
What should a guest room smell like? Aired and almost neutral. The main job is opening it up and changing the bedding, because a spare room that stays shut develops a settled smell. Any fragrance should be minimal and switched off before the guest occupies the room.

Should I scent a guest room? Very lightly, and before they arrive rather than while they are in it. A guest sleeping in your house cannot ask you to turn something off, which is the same reason hotels keep guest rooms close to neutral.

Why does my spare room smell shut up? Because it is closed for weeks at a time with no air movement, and bedding stored in a cupboard picks up whatever that cupboard smells like. Open it regularly and air the linen before use.
The short answer
Short answer: a guest room should be aired and almost neutral, because the person sleeping there cannot ask for it to be changed. Open the room and change the bedding first, since a closed spare room develops a settled smell. Any fragrance should be two drops run before the guest arrives, then switched off, using the Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity at Rs 299 for 15ml in a Boond (Rs 799).
The pick: the Day & Night reed duo (₹1,498) as the whole-home start, or single signatures from ₹749.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection scenting range.
A home that smells like itself - at a glanceStep 1 - honest air first: ventilation and source care in every roomStep 2 - one signature family, room by room (reeds from ₹749)Step 3 - occasions layered by mist diffuser (scent from ₹299)Large open homes - the Vaayu machine, on a schedule (luxury)All alcohol-free · made in India
A home's fragrance is a system, not a product: honest air beneath, one scent family expressed room by room, occasions layered on top, and consistency held for years. That is what guests experience as "your home always smells incredible" - and what the household experiences as home.
Straight answer
What should a guest room smell like?
Air it, then almost nothing. 1. Open it up. A spare room shut for weeks develops a specific settled smell that everybody recognises and nobody likes, and the fix is air rather than fragrance - open the windows for a couple of hours the day before, and again the morning of. 2. Deal with the linen. Bedding that has been folded in a cupboard for a month carries the cupboard, and anything that went away slightly damp carries worse. Wash or at least air it before the bed is made. 3. Check the usual suspects. An unused bathroom's floor trap can dry out and let air back the wrong way, which is a common cause of a guest wing smelling faintly wrong. Run the taps and flush before anybody arrives. 4. Then almost nothing. Two drops of the Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity from the collection, ₹299 for 15ml, in a Boond (₹799), run for twenty minutes before they arrive and then switched off and put away. 5. Why so little. A guest cannot ask you to turn something off in your own house, so anything they dislike they will simply endure for three nights. Leaving the room near-neutral removes that entirely, and it is what good hotels do for exactly the same reason. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: air the room, sort the linen, check the bathroom trap, then two drops for twenty minutes before they arrive and switch it off. They cannot ask you to stop.
The whole-home start most households choose: the Day & Night duo - Morning Freshness for the day's bright spaces and Evening Calm for the bedroom - at ₹1,498, flame-free and plug-free. Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for hosting hours.

1
They will not tell you
Which decides the whole approach
A guest who finds a room too strongly scented has no realistic way to say so. They are in somebody else's house for a short stay, the fragrance is obviously deliberate, and mentioning it would read as criticism of hospitality - so they will keep the window open, sleep badly if it bothers them, and say the room was lovely. That silence is the reason to err far lower here than anywhere else in the house. It is also precisely why hotel guest rooms are kept close to neutral while the lobby is not: the guest in the lobby is passing through, and the guest in the room is stuck.
Tip: a guest who finds the room too strong will open the window and tell you it was lovely.
2
The problem is usually closure
Not an absence of fragrance
What people are trying to fix when they scent a guest room is nearly always the shut-up quality of a room that has been closed for weeks, and fragrance is the wrong instrument for it - it adds a second smell next to the first. Air is the right instrument, and it is free. Open the room the day before, air the bedding, run the water in an unused bathroom to refill dry traps, and wipe surfaces that have collected dust. A room that has been opened and cleaned needs almost nothing on top, and a room that has not will smell of both things at once.
3
Leave them a choice
The considerate version
If you do want to offer something, the elegant approach is to make it optional rather than ambient. Leave the diffuser in the room switched off with the bottle beside it and a line about how to use it, so the guest can run it if they like it and ignore it if they do not. That converts a decision made on their behalf into a small piece of hospitality, and it is genuinely appreciated by anybody who is sensitive. It also solves the whole problem at once: nobody has to endure anything, and the guests who enjoy it get exactly what they want.
Tip: leave it switched off with the bottle beside it. Now it is hospitality rather than a decision made for them.
The SOSA principle
A guest who finds the room too strong will open the window and tell you it was lovely.
That silence is the reason to err lower here than anywhere else.

A note from Sonal

Nobody actually buys a diffuser. In ten years of making fragrance I have never once met a customer who wanted a bottle with sticks in it. What they want is the moment someone walks into their home, pauses, and says "wow - it smells incredible in here." They want their children to grow up with a smell that will mean home for the rest of their lives. They want the house to feel finished.

That is why I compose scents the way I do - not as products but as the missing layer of a home: the fresh note at the door that says this house is kept, the warm one in the living room that says you are welcome, the lavender in the bedroom that says the day is over. One family of scents, held for years, becomes something no decor budget can buy: identity.

Everything here is alcohol-free, flame-free where it matters, and made in small batches in India. And a part of every order supports girl-child education - because a home's best fragrance is what it gives back.

Frequently asked questions

What should a guest room smell like?
Aired and almost neutral. Open the room, change the bedding, and keep any fragrance minimal.
Should I run a diffuser while they are staying?
Better not. Run it for twenty minutes before they arrive, then switch it off, or leave it for them to use if they wish.
Why does my spare room smell shut up?
Because it is closed for long periods with no air movement, and stored bedding picks up the cupboard.
What about an unused guest bathroom?
Run the taps and flush before anybody arrives. A dry floor trap lets air back the wrong way.
Which scent, if any?
The Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity at two drops, Rs 299 for 15ml. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The feeling when someone walks in
SOSA — alcohol-free home fragrance for the home that smells like itself

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the home-care and buying advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory signals reach the brain's emotion and memory centres (amygdala, hippocampus) ahead of conscious processing, which is why scents trigger emotional responses and autobiographical memories with unusual speed and durability; a home's ambient scent influences mood, comfort and social judgments at moderate, replicated effect sizes, with gentle intensities outperforming strong ones and no fragrance effect surviving unmanaged odour sources. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural rattan reeds (no flame, electricity or water), from ₹749, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks per fill; refills from ₹2,399. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799), Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a separate water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, ~1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India.
