Should I put a diffuser on my balcony?
Almost certainly not, and here is what to do instead. 1. The physics. An ultrasonic diffuser produces a fine mist that builds a level inside a closed volume. Outdoors there is no volume: the mist disperses within seconds, the register never accumulates, and a bottle empties into the sky. Nothing about the product is at fault; it is simply the wrong instrument. 2. What competes. Even on a still evening, a balcony carries traffic, dust, neighbours cooking, and whatever the weather is doing, all of which comfortably out-scale anything a domestic machine could add. 3. What actually works. Plants. Potted jasmine or mogra, curry leaf, tulsi, lemongrass and mint do real work outdoors, they release when brushed or watered, and they belong there in a way a machine does not. 4. The exception. Every principle in indoor fragrance depends on a bounded volume: output accumulates, reaches a level, and holds until it decays or the air changes. Remove the boundary and none of that happens. On a balcony the mist leaves the machine and is gone, so the only place a register exists is within a few inches of the unit, which is not an experience anybody is buying. Understanding this saves money and disappointment, and it also explains why outdoor hospitality spaces do not attempt ambient scenting either - they use planting, which works with the conditions instead of against them.

A covered verandah with walls on three sides, on a windless evening, is functionally a room and will hold a light register perfectly well.
