Founder Diaries · Affordable Gifting · Girlfriend and Boyfriend
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 13 min read Updated August 2026
This page is a decision tree rather than a list, and it works the same way for either partner, because none of the four questions it asks is about the person at all. They are about a room: whether they control one, how big it is, what they do in it, and whether anything they have ever said suggests a preference. Answer those four and the tree produces one bottle and one size out of the five scents and two volumes SOSA makes. Answer none of them and it still produces an answer, which is Evening Calm at ₹799 — the softest thing we make and the safest blind buy in the range.
Quick answers — read this first
If you know nothing: Evening Calm 50ml, ₹799 — 8.9 on the SOSA strength scale, low polarisation, works in any room, no cultural loading. The safest gift in the range for either partner.

If they are hard to buy for, or the room is shared: Mountain Breeze ₹849 — dry pine, sage and cedar, the least sweet and least gendered register we make.

If you know one thing: they like flowers → Garden Bloom ₹799. They are serious about coffee → Fresh Brew ₹849. They work from home at a desk → Morning Freshness ₹749.

The honest gap: there is no reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899, no gift card, no hamper and no curated reed gift set — the duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are two bottles. There is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill.
The short answer
Short answer: the four questions are do they control a room · how big is it · what do they do in it · do you know one thing they like. Most people can answer the first three and not the fourth, and that is enough. If even the first is uncertain, the reed is the wrong format and a ₹449 candle is the better gift.
Size follows the room, not the budget: 50ml at ₹749–₹849 for anything up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom, a home office, a bathroom — lasting 6–8 weeks. 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 for a living room, a kitchen or an open-plan flat, lasting 14–18 weeks. Reed count is the free volume dial: three in a bedroom, all six in a living room.
The strength scale, softest to deepest: Evening Calm 8.9 · Garden Bloom 8.9 · Morning Freshness 9.0 · Mountain Breeze 9.4 · Fresh Brew 9.5. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds, refillable glass, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Which SOSA reed diffuser should I give my girlfriend or boyfriend?
1. Do they control a room? If the answer is a shared flat with three other people, or a family home where the living room is not theirs to decide about, stop here — a reed is the wrong format and a single Smoked Oudh or Sandalwood candle at ₹449 is the better gift, because it occupies ten square centimetres and asks nobody's permission. If they have a bedroom, a desk or a flat of their own, continue.

2. How big is that room? Up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom, a home office, a bathroom — take the 50ml at ₹749–₹849, which lasts 6–8 weeks. Above that, or if the door opens straight onto it, take the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349, which lasts 14–18 weeks. This is the only question in the tree with a wrong answer that money cannot fix: a 50ml in a large living room simply reads as faint.

3. What do they do in that room? Sleep in it → Evening Calm ₹799. Work in it → Morning Freshness ₹749 or Mountain Breeze ₹849. Arrive into it, or have people over → Garden Bloom ₹799 in 130ml. Read and sit in it in winter → Fresh Brew ₹849.

4. Do you know one single thing about what they like? Flowers, coffee, lavender, the outdoors, hotels. One fact is enough to override step three. No fact at all is also fine, and produces Evening Calm.

5. Have they ever called a fragrance "too much"? If yes, take the lower half of the strength scale — Evening Calm at 8.9 or Garden Bloom at 8.9 — and tell them to use three reeds rather than six. If they have ever complained that something faded, take Mountain Breeze at 9.4 or Fresh Brew at 9.5 and use all six.

Every reed is alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle. Composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: room first, size second, activity third, taste last. No taste information at all still gives you Evening Calm ₹799, the safest blind buy in the range; a shared flat gives you a ₹449 candle instead of a reed. The same tree works for either partner, because none of it is about gender.
SOSA Evening Calm lavender and chamomile reed diffuser
Where the tree lands when you have no information
Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender and chamomile ₹799 / 50ml
The four blind-buy criteria are low strength, low polarisation, room-agnostic and no cultural or memory loading, and Evening Calm is the only scent in the range that satisfies all four. At 8.9 it is deliberately the gentlest thing we make; the real chamomile in the base keeps it warm rather than clinical, which is the difference between this and the lavender that smells like a hospital. Ishaan V. in Mumbai put it in a guest room and his mother asked where the spa smell was coming from. 6–8 weeks on the 50ml, 14–18 on the 130ml at ₹1,299.

The three questions that do most of the work

Of the five steps above, three carry almost all the weight, and they are the three that ask about the room rather than the recipient. This is deliberate: the information you actually possess about a partner in the first year is spatial, not olfactory. You know where they sleep and roughly how big it is. You do not know whether they prefer a herbal lavender to a British rose, and neither, in most cases, do they.

1
QUESTION ONE · WHOSE ROOM IS IT
If the answer is “shared”, the answer is not a reed
SOSA hand-poured scented jar candleSmoked Oudh₹449A reed diffuser scents a room continuously for six to eight weeks, which is wonderful in a room that belongs to the recipient and awkward in one that does not. Putting a scent into a shared living room is a decision on behalf of everybody who lives there, and it tends to be resolved by somebody quietly moving the bottle. If your partner shares a flat or lives with family, buy for their own room or buy a candle: the Smoked Oudh and Sandalwood singles at ₹449 are message-free and single-scent, and the ₹379 jar candles — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings, Evening Walks — do the same job for less.
Continue to question two if: there is one door they can close, and what is behind it is theirs.
2
QUESTION TWO · HOW BIG
50ml to about 150 sq ft · 130ml above that
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuserGarden Bloom₹799This is the question people skip and the one that most often decides whether the gift is described as lovely or as faint. The 50ml at ₹749–₹849 is built for a room up to roughly 150 sq ft: a bedroom, a home office, a bathroom, a study. It runs 6–8 weeks. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 is for a living room, a kitchen or an open-plan end of a flat, and it runs 14–18 weeks — Ritu K. in Delhi put one in an entryway and three separate guests asked which hotel it reminded them of. A 130ml in a small bedroom is not a mistake, merely generous; a 50ml in a large open room is a genuine disappointment, and no scent choice rescues it.
The rule: match the size to the room, then use reed count to fine-tune — six reeds for full strength, three for soft.
3
QUESTION THREE · WHAT HAPPENS IN IT
Sleep, work, arrival or reading — four rooms, four scents
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849A room has a job and the scent should agree with it. SleepingEvening Calm ₹799, the softest at 8.9; Rhea M. in Pune calls it part of her bedtime routine. WorkingMountain Breeze ₹849 for concentration, or Morning Freshness ₹749 for a desk somebody sits down at in the morning. Arriving and hostingGarden Bloom ₹799, in 130ml if the room is large. Reading, sitting, winterFresh Brew ₹849. And one placement rule that applies to all four: put it where air already moves, and never directly under a running split AC.
Override this if: you know one concrete thing they like. A known preference beats a room every time.

Why the tree asks about the home and not about them

Gift guides for partners almost all begin with personality, and personality is the least reliable input available. A person's stated taste in fragrance is usually a memory of one perfume they wore at twenty-two, and it maps very badly onto what they want a room to smell like at nine in the evening. Home fragrance is not worn; it is inhabited, by them and by anybody else who is there, for weeks at a stretch. The question "what would she like" is genuinely hard. The question "how big is her bedroom and does she sleep well" is easy, and it produces a better bottle.

There is a calibration argument here too, and it is the one this whole family of pages turns on. In an early relationship the safest gift is the one that does not require the recipient to have a position on it. A perfume for the body is a comment on how they smell. A cushion is a comment on their sofa. A reed diffuser in the corner of a room they control is a small, reversible, entirely optional improvement to the air, and if it is not to their taste it is over in eight weeks with nobody obliged to say anything. That reversibility is not a weakness of a consumable gift. It is the reason a consumable is the correct shape of gift when you have known somebody for four months.

The two blind-buy verdicts are worth stating plainly, since they do most of the practical work. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest thing in the range: 8.9 on the strength scale, low polarisation, room-agnostic and carrying no cultural or memory loading. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the best answer for somebody genuinely hard to buy for and for any room two people share, because a dry wood is the least sweet and least polarising register there is — Shaan D. in Chennai reports that his partner, who dislikes anything he would call masculine, asked him to refill it. At the other end, Fresh Brew at ₹849 is the least safe blind buy: at 9.5 it is the deepest thing we make and a gourmand besides, superb for somebody who takes coffee seriously and wrong for anybody you are guessing about. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the most-gifted floral in the range and still not a blind buy, because anti-floral is a common and firmly held position.

Where the tree lands most often — the three ends of it
The SOSA principle
You do not know their taste in fragrance. You do know how big their bedroom is and whether they sleep well — and that is a better input, because a room is a fact and a preference is a memory.
Which is why every question in this tree is answerable from things you have already seen, and why the tree still returns an answer when you can answer none of them.

When the answer is not a reed at all — three situations, said plainly

A decision tree that always arrives at the thing the writer sells is not a decision tree. There are three situations in which I would not give home fragrance to a partner, and they are worth more than any recommendation above, because getting one of them wrong is how a thoughtful gift becomes a problem. A home mid-renovation already contains more smells than anybody wants and nowhere stable to put a bottle. A household with a newborn that has not asked for anything scented should not receive an unrequested addition to the air; if they have asked, Evening Calm at 8.9 is the gentlest thing we make and Tara P. in Chennai gave exactly that to a friend with a new baby. And a stated scent aversion — migraine, asthma, an explicit dislike — is not a preference to be worked around. It is a no.

Then the honest gaps in the range itself, twice-stated on every page in this universe for good reason. There is no reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899, so any budget below ₹500 is a candle, a wax melt, a car perfume or a 3ml attar rather than a reed. There is no gift card, no hamper and no curated reed gift set — the duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are simply two bottles in a box. There is no room spray of any kind at SOSA; every SOSA spray is a car perfume. There is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser, though the Smoked Oudh and Sandalwood candles at ₹449 are real and are the cheapest route into that register. And there is no hotel-inspired reed: those seven scents are water-based and go only in an ultrasonic machine such as the Boond at ₹899. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for that machine and is not a gift on its own.

And to be fair to the alternatives this page displaces, since a partner's birthday has more than one right answer. Flowers are the better gift when the moment is the point rather than the fortnight — they are at their best on the day, they need no shelf, and nothing else says today as clearly. Something edible and shared is the better gift when you will be there to eat it, because a gift consumed together is an evening rather than an object. And an experience — a meal, a drive, a ticket — beats everything in this catalogue when what the relationship needs is time rather than a thing. Where all three lose is duration and quietness: they happen once. A reed diffuser is the version of the same intention that keeps working in the background for two months, which is a different and equally real kind of gift.

You are not choosing a fragrance for a person. You are choosing one for a room they happen to live in.

Honest notes for buyers: every SOSA reed is alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT (caprylic/capric triglyceride) carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, climate-tested through 45°C heat and 85% RH monsoon humidity. 50ml suits a room up to about 150 sq ft and lasts 6–8 weeks; 130ml suits larger rooms and lasts 14–18 weeks; reed count is the volume dial and two or three reeds in a small bathroom will stretch a 50ml close to three months. The hedge, when you do not want to decide for them
Day & Night duo — Morning Freshness + Evening Calm ₹1,498
Two 50ml bottles rather than a hamper, and the best-value gift in the range for one specific reason: it hedges. They keep the one they prefer and the other goes into a second room, so a guess that would otherwise be right or wrong becomes a choice they make themselves. Bright in the room they start the day in, soft in the room they end it in. Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 pairs bright with dry instead, and Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 pairs the gourmand with the floral.

A note from Sonal

I built this tree because of how the questions actually arrive. Almost nobody writes to ask which scent a particular person would enjoy — they write to say I have ₹800 and I have met his flat twice and I do not want to get this wrong. That is not a fragrance question. It is a question about risk, and risk is reduced by asking things you can answer rather than things you cannot.

So the four questions are all spatial, and the default at the end is deliberate. Evening Calm exists in the range partly because a range needs something that is safe to give. At 8.9 it is the quietest composition I have made; it does not announce itself, it does not carry a memory the way rose and jasmine do in Indian homes, and it works equally in a bedroom, a bathroom and a guest room. If you take nothing else from this page, take that bottle and stop worrying.

The part I care most about is the row at the bottom of the table — the one that says buy nothing. A home mid-renovation, a newborn, a stated aversion: those are three occasions where the correct answer is a different category entirely, and a page that cannot say so has not earned the recommendations above it. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Which SOSA reed diffuser is the safest gift for a girlfriend or boyfriend?
Evening Calm at ₹799. It satisfies all four blind-buy criteria — low strength at 8.9, low polarisation, room-agnostic, and no cultural or memory loading. If the person is famously hard to buy for, or the room is one you share, Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the better answer because a dry wood is the least polarising register there is.
Is the answer different for a girlfriend and a boyfriend?
No. The inputs that matter are the room, its size, what happens in it and any single thing you know they like — none of which is gendered. The most quoted review in our range is from a man whose partner, who dislikes anything he calls masculine, asked him to refill Mountain Breeze. Buy the register that suits the room and ignore the marketing convention.
Should I buy a 50ml or a 130ml?
50ml at ₹749–₹849 for a room up to about 150 sq ft — bedroom, home office, bathroom — lasting 6–8 weeks. 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 for a living room, kitchen or open-plan space, lasting 14–18 weeks. A 130ml in a small room is merely generous; a 50ml in a large open room reads as faint, and changing the scent will not fix it.
What if they share a flat or live with their family?
Then a reed is the wrong format for the shared rooms, and you should buy for their own room or buy a candle instead. The Smoked Oudh and Sandalwood singles at ₹449 are message-free and occupy almost no space; the ₹379 jar candles do the same job for less. Scenting a shared living room is a decision belonging to everybody who lives there.
Is there a SOSA reed diffuser gift set or hamper?
No. There is no gift card, no hamper and no curated reed gift set. The duos — Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 and Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 — are two 50ml bottles, which is a genuinely good gift and not a hamper. There is also no reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899.
