I want that stated in the first screen because the title invites the other reading and the other reading is wrong. Lighting and climate sit on your control system. Three layers, and how each one actually connects to the others

The reason this question produces so much loose language is that the three layers connect in three completely different ways, and only one of those ways is the one the phrase "work together" normally implies. Lighting and climate connect to each other digitally, through your control system. Climate connects to scent mechanically, through air. Fragrance behaves in the opposite direction from lighting: in light we prize responsiveness, and a room that adjusts to daylight and occupancy feels intelligent, whereas the luxury signal in scent is constancy at a low level. A scent that visibly changes state is a scent somebody notices as a mechanism rather than as an atmosphere. So the absence of triggers and dynamic control costs this subsystem far less than it would cost any other on the drawing. The one thing I would genuinely like is diagnostics — remaining oil across six units without walking to each — and that does not exist, so I am not going to imply it does.
The coordination: set it once, key-lock it, record it, and let it be the constant the other two layers move against.

Aligning three timetables that cannot see each other

Here is the actual method, and it is deliberately unglamorous. Get three things in front of you: the lighting scene schedule from the controller, the HVAC occupancy programme from the thermostat or the building management system, and the household’s own description of when the property is used. Lay them over one another and look for the hours where the space is occupied, closed and ventilated at the same time. That intersection is the honest scent window, and everything outside it is either fragrance nobody receives or fragrance the air will not distribute. Then extend the start about an hour earlier than the first arrival, because the mist needs time to travel a connected volume and the perception is collected in the first seconds somebody crosses the threshold.

Two refinements make the result noticeably better. The first is to align the scent window with neighbouring zones rather than staggering them, because two adjacent volumes on different hours produce a boundary where one side is fragranced and the other is not, and somebody walking between them experiences that as a fault rather than as a design. The second is to keep the intensity relationship between zones fixed even when the hours differ — a slightly more present entrance, a quieter bedroom wing, nothing in the kitchen — so that the property reads as one atmosphere with variations. A closed door is a boundary and an open plan is one volume, and that fact does more to shape this timetable than any setting in the app does.

There is one more thing to say about why a well-coordinated installation feels integrated even though it is not, and it is the point that usually wins the client over. In a good hotel you cannot find the diffuser, and the reason is that the scent is introduced into the building’s moving air rather than released from an object on a table — so there is no gradient to walk up and no source to locate. That absence of a findable source is what reads as "the building does this", and it is achieved with ductwork and a schedule, not with a protocol. The same is true of your project. A client who never sees a machine, never operates one and never catches it changing state will describe the property as fully integrated, and the only person who needs to know the architecture is the person maintaining it.

The comparison an integrator actually needs, so that the honest sentence about scenting can be said early and without embarrassment. The middle columns are the ones to read carefully, because they are where an assumption carried over from lighting or climate will cost somebody a commissioning visit.

The SOSA principle

The client is buying the second one — and will describe it as the first, which is exactly why the person specifying it has to know the difference.

Drift, and the one document that prevents it

Every independent schedule in a building eventually diverges from every other one, and this arrangement has no mechanism to notice. Somebody moves the evening lighting scene forward by an hour because the family’s routine changed. The mechanical hours are retimed. A new house manager arrives and adjusts the occupancy programme. All three of those are perfectly reasonable, none of them touches the fragrance, and the result eighteen months later is a scent window that opens into an empty, unventilated house. Nothing will report this. There is no dashboard showing the machine’s state, no notification, no integration to break visibly — the failure is silent, and it presents as a vague client complaint that the fragrance "does not seem to work any more".

The prevention costs one page. Put the scent hours, days, intensity, oil and last refill date into the same handover document as the lighting scene schedule and the mechanical occupancy programme, one line per zone, and add a note that all three should be read together whenever one changes. The first is adaptation: the commonest report on any scenting installation is that it has stopped working, and it almost never has. Receptors stop reporting a constant stimulus within minutes, so a resident genuinely cannot smell what a visitor smells immediately, and the diagnostic is to leave for a quarter of an hour and walk back in, or simply to ask the next person through the door. This is the question I am asked most often by people who install automation, and it is also the question where I am most careful about my own language, because the honest answer is slightly disappointing for about ten seconds and then genuinely interesting. Nothing talks to anything. The fragrance is not on your bus, it will not appear in your scene list, and no sensor will bring it on. If somebody has told a client otherwise about this product, that conversation has to be corrected before commissioning rather than during it.

What I find interesting is what happens once you accept that. You stop trying to make scent behave like light — responsive, dynamic, event-driven — and you start treating it as the thing the other two layers move against. The building brightens and dims and warms and cools around a fragrance that does not change, and the constancy is the point. In perfumery that is not a limitation, it is the design target: a person should notice a room on arrival and then stop noticing it, which is the same thing as saying the composition should be beneath the level at which anybody has to think about it.

The one coordination I would insist on is the mechanical one. Put the scent window inside the hours the air is actually moving. It is a twenty-minute exercise with two printed schedules and it makes a larger difference to what the client experiences than any other decision on this page — larger than the accord, larger than the intensity, larger than the machine.
