Should every floor of a hotel smell the same? They should carry the same register at the same low level, and small differences are normal because warm air rises through shafts and stairwells and floors are not identical.

Why do upper floors differ? Stack effect. Warm air moves upward through lift shafts, stairwells and risers all day, so upper floors receive more of whatever the lower building is producing.

What if one floor is noticeably worse? Look for a local cause - a pantry, a riser, a laundry chute, a vacant room with a dry trap - rather than adjusting that floor's level upward.
The short answer
Short answer: Same register and level everywhere. Small differences are stack effect, not failure.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.

A customer gift works when it survives the drive home - sweets vanish in a day and keychains join a drawer, but a fragrance is used daily in the customer's own car or living room, replaying your brand at every use. The method: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, brand the gesture with your card, pilot and scale. This guide walks the exact play, with real SOSA options at every band.
Straight answer
Should every floor of a hotel smell the same?
They should carry the same register at the same low level - and they will still differ slightly, which is normal rather than a failure. Three reasons floors diverge. One, and the largest: buildings stack. Warm air rises, and it rises through lift shafts, stairwells and service risers all day, so upper floors receive more of whatever the lower building is producing than lower floors do. A confident lobby propagates upward whether or not that was the plan. Two: floors are not copies of each other. Occupancy differs, category mix differs, and the floor with the club lounge, the pantry or the laundry chute is not the same room as the floor without them. Three: age and condition differ - a refurbished floor and an original one behave differently, because fabric holds and releases. So specify one outcome rather than one setting, and expect small variation. And when one floor is noticeably worse, look for a local cause - a pantry, a riser, a vacant room with a dried-out trap - rather than raising that floor's level, which fixes nothing and adds a fifth source to four. Hotel Collection from ₹299, SOSA Sukoon ₹1,799, SOSA Megh ₹3,499. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Quick answer: same register, same level, and small differences are the building stacking rather than failing.

Yes in register, and they will not in practice

Yes as an instruction, and no as a realistic expectation, and holding both is what stops a property chasing a target it cannot reach. The instruction is straightforward: every floor carries the same register at the same low level, because a guest crosses several thresholds between the lobby and their bed and the building should read as one place. A change of level from lobby to corridor reads as the building quietening as they go deeper into it; a change of register at a threshold reads as a fault. And there is no reason for floor four and floor nine to differ by design, since a guest does not choose their floor and a returning guest may be on a different one each visit. So one register, one corridor level, one room level, recorded on one page. The realistic expectation is that they will differ slightly anyway, and knowing why prevents the wrong response. Three mechanisms. The first is stack effect, and it is the largest. Warm air rises, and in a multi-storey building it rises through the vertical paths available to it: lift shafts, stairwells, service risers and any gaps in the fabric. That movement runs all day and it means upper floors receive more of whatever the lower building is producing than lower floors do. A confident lobby propagates upward whether or not that was intended, and a property that has never scented a corridor in its life may still find that the ninth floor carries something the second does not. The practical consequences are worth stating: if your lobby is over-scented, your upper floors are the place it will be reported; and if you are diagnosing an uneven building, start at the top rather than the middle. The second mechanism is that floors are not copies of each other, whatever the drawings suggest. Occupancy differs - a floor running at ninety per cent delivers far more room air into its corridor than one at forty, because every door opening exports a parcel. Category mix differs, and suites behave differently from standard rooms because they are larger and occupied for longer. And the fittings differ: the floor with the club lounge, the service pantry, the linen store or the laundry chute is not the same environment as the floor without them, and any of those can dominate a corridor locally. A pantry door propped open is one of the commonest single causes of a floor that reads differently from its neighbours. The third mechanism is age and condition. In a property that has been refurbished in phases, a floor with new carpet, new curtains and new mattresses behaves differently from one with original fabric, because textiles hold what has been in a room and give it back slowly. A refurbished floor is usually quieter and cleaner, and an original floor is usually fuller - which can read as inconsistency when it is really an asset age difference. Similarly, a floor with older bathrooms, older drainage or older window seals may carry damp that its neighbours do not. So: specify one outcome rather than one setting. The outcome for a corridor is that a guest stepping out of the lift and walking to their door notices nothing in particular; the outcome for a room is that opening the door produces clean air and nothing describable. Record the settings that achieve those on each floor, and expect them to be similar rather than identical. Where they need to differ - and they sometimes will, because a top floor under a flat roof in a hot city behaves differently from a second floor - record why, so the next manager does not standardise them back. Now the important operational instruction: when one floor is noticeably worse than the others, do not raise its level. That is the instinctive response and it is wrong in three ways. It adds a fifth source to a corridor already carrying four - rooms, the lift shaft, housekeeping trolleys and the risers - and a corridor clears almost nothing, because it typically has no external wall, no openable window and no extraction of its own. It combines with whatever is already there rather than masking it, and the combination is worse than either alone while carrying the message that somebody knew and chose to cover it. And it hides the actual fault, which is almost always local and findable. Look instead for a local cause. A pantry or service door propped open. A riser or a laundry chute. A vacant room with a drain trap that has dried out, which is the commonest single source of a musty note and is solved by running the taps as a checklist item. A bathroom on that floor that never fully dries. A housekeeping trolley that stands at one end of the hall through a long shift, where used linen becomes a source over hours even though it was not one when loaded. Or simply an occupancy pattern that puts more traffic on that floor at that hour. All of those are findable in twenty minutes by walking the floor at four in the afternoon rather than at ten in the morning. On the specification itself: corridors run very low or at nothing, because of everything above. Lift lobbies are the better place for continuity, since every guest passes one twice and a small enclosed space holds a level reliably - a Sukoon at Rs 1,799 suits a lift lobby and a Boond at Rs 799 a small one. Rooms run the lowest level in the building or nothing, because a room is somebody's bedroom for three nights and they cannot leave when they have had enough. Where a corridor carries a token of continuity, a reed at Rs 749 to Rs 849 is the right scale: continuous, silent, invisible, nothing to turn up, three to four months from a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml, output rising with warmth and falling with cold - which is itself a floor-to-floor variable in a building where upper floors run warmer. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. Use one register throughout: Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, holds character at a whisper and is the safest whole-property choice; Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, is dry and structural; White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the softest we make and suits rooms. All seven are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, they are SOSA's own interpretations, and we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Finally, audit vertically rather than horizontally. Most properties check a floor; the useful check is a column. Once a month, have somebody who does not work in the building ride to the top floor and walk down through two or three, at four in the afternoon, reporting what changes as they descend. Stack effect makes that the direction the information runs in. Your own team cannot supply this reading, because everybody who works in a hotel adapts to a steady background within about an hour of arriving and stops perceiving it, and adaptation is asymmetric, so a level never seems to have grown, only to have gone - which with three shifts a day means every correction anybody makes is upward. Record every zone, its device, its register, its setting and the date it was set, floor by floor, with seasonal dates, since humid air carries fragrance more slowly and clears it less readily. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellness claims of any kind, and SOSA ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against a zone list on WhatsApp.

Why this works
Why floors diverge
1 Warm air rises, so upper floors receive more 2 Occupancy and category differ floor by floor 3 Pantries, risers and plant are not evenly distributed 4 So specify one outcome and expect small differences
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
Buildings stack
And the movement runs all day
Warm air rises through lift shafts, stairwells and service risers, so upper floors receive more of whatever the lower building produces. A confident lobby propagates upward whether or not that was intended.
Tip: If the lobby is over-scented, the ninth floor is where it gets reported.
02
Floors are not copies
Occupancy, category, pantry, riser, chute
A floor at ninety per cent delivers far more room air into its corridor than one at forty, and the floor with the club lounge or the linen store is not the same environment as the floor without them.
03
So never raise a bad floor
Find the local cause instead
A propped pantry door, a riser, a vacant room with a dried trap, a bathroom that never dries, a trolley standing all shift. All findable in twenty minutes by walking it at four rather than at ten.
Tip: Raising it adds a fifth source and hides the fault.
The SOSA principle
Audit a column, not a floor.
Stack effect means the information runs downward from the top.

Because a building stacks, and floors are not copies of each other

Yes as an instruction and no as a realistic expectation, and holding both stops a property chasing a target it cannot reach. The instruction: every floor carries the same register at the same low level, because a guest crosses several thresholds and the building should read as one place - a change of level reads as the building quietening while a change of register reads as a fault, and there is no reason for floor four and floor nine to differ by design when a guest does not choose their floor. The realistic expectation is small divergence, and knowing why prevents the wrong response. Stack effect is the largest: warm air rises through lift shafts, stairwells, service risers and gaps in the fabric all day, so upper floors receive more of whatever the lower building produces, and a confident lobby propagates upward whether or not that was intended - which means an over-scented lobby gets reported on the ninth floor, and an uneven building should be diagnosed from the top down. Floors are also not copies: occupancy differs, and a floor at ninety per cent delivers far more room air into its corridor than one at forty; category mix differs; and the floor with the club lounge, service pantry, linen store or laundry chute is a different environment, with a propped pantry door among the commonest single causes of one floor reading unlike its neighbours. Age and condition differ too, since a refurbished floor with new carpet, curtains and mattresses behaves differently from one with original fabric, because textiles hold and release slowly. So specify one outcome rather than one setting, record what achieves it floor by floor, and note any deliberate differences so the next manager does not standardise them away. And when one floor is worse, never raise its level: that adds a fifth source to a corridor already carrying four, combines rather than masks, and hides a fault that is almost always local and findable in twenty minutes.

The SOSA business gifting edit

Whatever your business gifts, the logic is the same: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, keep the register gentle and crowd-safe, and brand the gesture with your card rather than your logo on the product. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so every customer gift quietly gives twice. Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Should every floor of a hotel smell the same?
They should carry the same register at the same low level, and small differences are normal because buildings stack and floors are not identical.
Why do upper floors differ?
Warm air rises through lift shafts, stairwells and risers all day, so upper floors receive more of whatever the lower building is producing.
What if one floor is noticeably worse?
Find the local cause - a propped pantry door, a riser, a vacant room with a dried-out trap, a standing trolley - rather than raising that floor's level.
Does refurbishment change a floor?
Yes. New carpet, curtains and mattresses hold and release less than original fabric, so a refurbished floor usually reads cleaner than one that has not been done.
How should I audit this?
Vertically. Ride to the top floor and walk down through two or three at four in the afternoon, reporting what changes. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
