Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers · Longevity
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
This complaint has a hidden premise in it, and the premise is the problem. It assumes day one was the diffuser's true strength and everything since has been decline. It was not. Day one is a transient — six dry reeds drinking hard, all the lightest molecules leaving at once, in a room that has never smelled of this before. No reed diffuser holds that, ours included, and any that appears to is doing something to the formula I would rather not do to yours.
Quick answers — read this first
What happened: three phases. A spike in days one to three, a settle across weeks one to two, then a plateau that runs to the end of the bottle. The plateau is the product.

What made it feel worse: your nose adapted at the same time. Two curves fell together — the diffuser's, slightly, and your sensitivity to it, steeply.

The test: leave the room for fifteen minutes and walk back in. Most people find the plateau is still perfectly present.

The fix if it is real: flip all six reeds — and flip weekly from day one, not from the week it disappoints you.
The short answer
Short answer: nothing has gone wrong. A new reed diffuser has a genuine first-days spike, because six dry reeds wick faster than saturated ones and because the most volatile top notes of the composition all leave in the first seventy-two hours. It then settles to a lower, steadier output that it holds for the rest of the bottle — 6–8 weeks on a 50ml, 14–18 on a 130ml. You are comparing a plateau against a spike that was never sustainable.
What makes the drop feel far bigger than it is: olfactory adaptation. Your nose stops reporting a steady, unchanging smell within minutes of exposure, and it adapts hardest to the smell you live inside. So the fragrance falls a little and your sensitivity to it falls a lot, and the two are almost impossible to tell apart from inside the room. Leave for fifteen minutes and come back.
What to actually do: flip all six reeds weekly from the first week — flipping keeps the plateau flat rather than rescuing it later. Then check placement: near a doorway, waist to chest height, out of the AC's draught. If you want a longer plateau, the 130ml from ₹1,249 runs 14–18 weeks; an oil refill is ₹2,399 for 300ml. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Why did my reed diffuser smell strong on day one and much weaker by week three?
1. Because day one is a spike, not a level. Six brand-new, bone-dry reeds wick at their fastest rate on the first day and slow as they saturate. On top of that, the lightest molecules in the composition — citrus, mint, the green edge of pine — evaporate first and are largely gone within days. Together they produce an opening that no reed diffuser can sustain.

2. Because your nose fell faster than the fragrance did. Olfactory adaptation removes any constant smell from awareness within minutes, and it works on you hardest in your own home. Week three is typically when people report it has "stopped working" and, in the same week, guests start remarking on it.

3. Run the doorway test before doing anything else. Fifteen minutes out of the room, somewhere with its own smell, then attend to the first three seconds on return. If you catch it, the plateau is intact and there is nothing to fix.

4. Flip all six reeds — and flip from week one. Most people start flipping only once a diffuser disappoints them, which is late. Weekly flipping from the beginning is what keeps the plateau flat instead of sagging.

5. Do not chase day one. You can get back to something near it with ten reeds, and you will finish a 50ml in four or five weeks instead of six to eight. That is a fine choice for a festive week and an expensive one as a habit.

6. If the plateau itself is too low, change the composition, not the size. Fresh Brew at 9.5/10 and Mountain Breeze at 9.4/10 plateau higher than the softer scents. A bigger bottle plateaus at the same height for longer.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: the first three days are a spike caused by dry reeds and departing top notes; what follows is the real product. Your nose adapting at the same time exaggerates the drop enormously. Do the fifteen-minute doorway test, flip all six reeds weekly from week one, and judge the plateau rather than the opening.
SOSA Fresh Brew Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla reed diffuser
The highest plateau in the range
SOSA Fresh Brew · Coorg coffee & Kerala vanilla ₹849 / 50ml
9.5 out of 10 on the SOSA strength scale. It is also, not coincidentally, the composition with the smallest gap between its opening and its plateau — roasted coffee and vanilla are relatively heavy materials, so less of the fragrance departs in the first seventy-two hours than in a citrus or a green woody. If the first-week drop is what bothered you, this is the one that drops least. 130ml ₹1,349 for 14–18 weeks of the same plateau.

Part one — the three phases every reed diffuser goes through

A reed diffuser does not deliver a flat line and never has. It delivers a curve with three distinct sections, and knowing where you are on it turns an alarming experience into an ordinary one. The mistake is treating the first section as the specification. Nobody judges a bottle of wine by the first thirty seconds after opening, and nobody should judge a reed diffuser by its opening weekend.

1
PHASE ONE · DAYS 1–3
The spike — dry reeds and departing top notes
Two things happen at once and both are temporary. Six brand-new reeds are completely dry, so capillary action runs at its fastest and the exposed surface is saturated within hours. At the same time the most volatile part of the composition leaves first — the Malabar lemon in Morning Freshness, the sharp green pine in Mountain Breeze, the fresh petal facets in Garden Bloom. Those are the molecules that make an opening feel bright and generous, and there is a finite quantity of them. A room that has never smelled of this before makes it larger still, because novelty is most of what your nose is actually reporting in those first days.
The honest framing: the spike is real, it is normal, and it is not something you were sold. It is the first three days of any wicked fragrance.
2
PHASE TWO · WEEKS 1–2
The settle — and where adaptation ambushes you
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuserGarden Bloom₹799 · 8.9/10Output eases as the reeds saturate and the heart of the composition takes over from the top. This is a modest decline — but the decline you experience in the same fortnight is anything but modest, because your olfactory system is adapting at the same time and far more steeply. Within minutes of steady exposure your receptors reduce their signalling, and after two weeks of living in a scent, your baseline has moved entirely. Two falling curves, one of them gentle and one of them cliff-like, are impossible to separate from inside the room. This is why the fifteen-minute doorway test is worth more here than any measurement: it removes your adaptation from the experiment and leaves only the diffuser's actual output.
The pattern to watch for: the week you decide it has stopped working is often the week a visitor first compliments it. Both observations are accurate.
3
PHASE THREE · WEEK 3 TO THE END
The plateau — this is the product you bought
From roughly week three the composition's heart and base are doing the work, and output holds remarkably steady until the oil runs low. On a 50ml that plateau runs to week six or eight; on a 130ml to week fourteen or eighteen. A well-built reed diffuser is judged here and nowhere else — the plateau is what your home actually smells of for ninety per cent of the bottle's life. It is also where a phthalate-free formulation shows its advantage: the cheap solvents that produce a spectacular week one are the same ones that break down in Indian heat and give you an acrid, chemical week six. Ours are phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base, which buys a lower opening and a longer, cleaner plateau. That is a deliberate trade and I would make it again.

Part two — the week-by-week timeline, and what is normal

What a 50ml bottle with six fibre reeds actually does in an ordinary Indian room, so you can locate yourself on the curve rather than guess.

The normal curve
A 50ml bottle, six reeds, week by week
When What the diffuser is doing What you perceive Is it a fault? Do this
Days 1–3 ★ Dry reeds wicking fast; top notes leaving The strongest it will ever be No — enjoy it, do not benchmark it Nothing
Week 1 Reeds saturating; heart notes taking over Noticeably less than day one No Start flipping now, not later
Week 2 Output easing gently toward the plateau Much less — adaptation is now dominant No Run the doorway test
Week 3 Plateau reached and holding Often "it has stopped working" No — guests will disagree with you Flip weekly; check placement
Weeks 4–6 Steady plateau; oil level visibly dropping Steady, if you have not adapted further No Keep flipping; consider a refill
Weeks 6–8 Oil low; output tapering genuinely A real, gradual fade No — the bottle is finishing Refill or replace
What would be a fault: a bottle that is silent in week one with a healthy oil level, or one that empties completely in three weeks. The first is usually unflipped or badly placed reeds; the second is almost always an AC vent, a fan or direct sunlight pointed at the bottle.

The three things this guide comes down to
The SOSA principle
Judge a reed diffuser at week four, not on the day it arrives.
The opening is a transient that belongs to dry reeds and departing top notes. The plateau is what your home actually smells of, and it is the only number worth paying for.

Part three — how to flatten the curve, and how to stay awake to it

Two separate problems hide inside this complaint and they want opposite treatments. The first is the diffuser's real decline, which is modest and largely preventable. Flip all six reeds weekly from week one — this is the single most effective thing, and almost everybody starts too late, treating flipping as a rescue rather than as maintenance. Place the bottle where gentle air passes it, near a doorway at waist to chest height, and keep it several feet clear of any AC vent, fan or window, since a mechanical draught accelerates the whole curve and empties the bottle weeks early. Keep it out of direct sunlight for the same reason.

The second is your adaptation, which is not preventable and is much larger. The only genuine remedy is interruption. Leaving the room for a quarter of an hour resets your sensitivity enough to judge honestly. Beyond that, the practical move is variety across rooms rather than volume in one: running Morning Freshness in the bathroom and Evening Calm in the bedroom means you cross a boundary several times a day and your nose registers each one. That is precisely why the Day & Night duo exists at ₹1,498. Seasonal rotation does the same over a longer cycle — a fresh citrus through the summer, a woody or a gourmand once the weather turns.

And the thing not to do, said plainly because it is the most common reaction: do not add four reeds in week three to chase the opening. You will get a fuller room and a bottle that finishes in five weeks rather than eight, and in another fortnight you will have adapted to the new level and be back where you started, one purchase poorer. If the plateau genuinely is lower than you want, the honest fix is a composition that plateaus higher — Fresh Brew at 9.5 or Mountain Breeze at 9.4 rather than the 8.9 of Evening Calm, which is deliberately the softest thing we make.

Every reed diffuser fades from day one. The question is only how far, and how flat it lands.

Honest notes for buyers: the phase timings on this page are SOSA's own working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurements — how quickly a bottle settles depends on room volume, temperature, humidity, reed count and placement. Our compositions are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base, which produces a smaller opening and a longer, cleaner plateau than solvent-boosted diffusers; that is a deliberate trade. Refills are oil only — you reuse your own vessel and reeds — and reeds are not sold separately, though we recommend refreshing them every few months. Reed oil does not go in a Sukoon or Boond, and the water-based Hotel Collection does not go in a reed bottle. Keep away from children and pets and stand the bottle on a tray. SOSA Day & Night reed diffuser duo
The answer to adaptation, not to output
SOSA Day & Night duo · Morning Freshness + Evening Calm ₹1,498 / 2 × 50ml
If the diffuser is working and you have simply stopped hearing it, more of the same scent will not help — you will adapt to that too. Two different scents in two rooms will, because you cross a boundary several times a day and your nose reports every crossing. Bright Malabar lemon and mint for the bathroom, kitchen or home office; Kashmir lavender and chamomile for the bedroom. Also as 2 × 130ml at ₹2,498 for four months of both.

A note from Sonal

I could win week one against any diffuser on the shelf. The method is not sophisticated — you load the top of the composition and you use a solvent that pushes it off the reed hard. Every customer would be delighted on Tuesday. The bill arrives in week six, as a fragrance that has gone thin and slightly chemical in the heat, and by then the person has decided that reed diffusers do not work rather than that the formula was built for the unboxing.

So this range is built the other way round, and the honest consequence is that our opening is smaller than some. What you get in exchange is a plateau that holds its shape through a Delhi June and a Bombay monsoon, on a phthalate-free base that does not develop off-notes when it gets hot. I would rather explain that trade in an article than quietly make the other one.

The thing I most want people to take from this page is the timing of the flip. Almost everybody starts flipping in week three, when they are already disappointed. Start in week one, when nothing is wrong. That is the difference between a plateau and a slope, and it costs nothing at all. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my reed diffuser smell strong on day one and weak by week three?
Because day one is a spike, not a level — six dry reeds wick fastest when new, and the lightest top notes of the composition leave in the first few days. Output then settles to a plateau it holds for the rest of the bottle. Your nose also adapts steeply over the same fortnight, which makes a modest decline feel like a collapse. Leave the room for fifteen minutes and walk back in before concluding anything.
Is it normal for a reed diffuser to fade after a week?
Yes, and every wicked fragrance does it. What is not normal is silence in week one with a full bottle — that is usually unflipped reeds or a bottle in dead air — or a 50ml emptying in three weeks, which is almost always an AC vent, a fan or direct sunlight. A 50ml should run 6–8 weeks and a 130ml 14–18.
Will flipping the reeds bring back day one?
It will restore the plateau, not the opening. Flipping returns the saturated end to the oil and exposes fresh surface, which recovers the delivery rate the bottle was designed for — but the volatile top notes that made day one bright are gone and do not come back. Flip all six weekly from week one and the plateau stays flat rather than sagging.
Which SOSA reed diffuser fades least in the first week?
Fresh Brew at ₹849, because roasted coffee and vanilla are relatively heavy materials and less of the composition departs early. The most noticeable early drop is in the brightest scents — Morning Freshness, where the Malabar lemon is doing much of the opening work. That is chemistry, not quality.
Should I buy a bigger bottle so it lasts longer at full strength?
A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 gives you a longer plateau — 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 — at the same height, not a higher one. If the plateau is the thing that disappoints you, change the composition instead. If the length is what you want, the 130ml or a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 for 8–11 months is the right buy.
