Rule: the sales floor is for units that have already stopped smelling of their box. If it went on display the same hour it was opened, that is the smell.

What happens to the packaging

Film and foam keep releasing after they come off the unit, and a heap of it in an open bin in the back store, with the door to the floor standing open, is a second source as strong as the first. Corrugated board adds its own paper-and-glue note. So: a closed bin for film and foam, emptied daily; boxes flattened and taken off site the same day rather than kept for a return that may never come; and a back-store door that closes and stays closed. How you ventilate
Fresh air for an hour before opening - the AC alone recirculates
A sealed, air-conditioned showroom does not remove air; it cools the same air and sends it round again, and each night adds a little more off-gassing to it. The fix is a daily hour of fresh air before the doors open: the AC on with the fresh-air damper open if the plant has one, or the doors propped for the first cool hour of the morning if it does not, so that the overnight box is emptied before anybody trades in it. Done daily, this is the routine that most shortens the plastic timeline. New showrooms call me in their first fortnight, and the request is nearly always the same: something to take away the plastic smell before the launch. I have to say the same thing every time, which is that nothing I make takes a smell away. It adds one. And the honest thing to add to a room that smells of film and foam is nothing, because plastic-and-cedar is worse than plastic, and because the launch guests will forgive a new floor for smelling new far sooner than they will forgive it for smelling like a cover-up.
What I ask instead is where the units are being unboxed. Almost always the answer is at the display, because that is where they are going anyway, and almost always that one habit explains the whole smell. Move it to the back store, bin the film in a closed bin, let each unit stand a day, and run fresh air for an hour before opening. The stale-morning page is the same hour for a different reason.
