A reed diffuser has no heat, no flame, no electricity, no battery. It is physics doing the work. And once you understand the physics, every decision about placement and reed count becomes obvious.

Rattan reeds - the most effective type because of their natural porous structure - are essentially bundles of microscopic longitudinal channels. Under magnification they look like a cluster of tiny straws bound together. When you place these reeds into a bottle of scented oil, capillary action begins: the surface tension of the liquid at the molecular level pulls the oil up into those channels against gravity. It travels up the reed slowly and steadily, reaching the tips exposed to the room's air.

At the top of the reeds, evaporation takes over. The fragrance molecules - volatile aromatic compounds with different molecular weights and vapour pressures - leave the liquid phase and enter the air as vapour. This is what you smell. It is passive, constant, and entirely dependent on ambient conditions: temperature, humidity, and air movement.

There is one more thing worth understanding: olfactory adaptation. Your nose adapts to a continuous scent and stops consciously registering it after 10-20 minutes. This is normal - it is not the diffuser fading. When someone walks into the room fresh, they will smell it clearly. This is why a well-placed diffuser is for your guests and for your own first-minute-of-entering-the-room experience, not a constant conscious smell. These five variables interact with each other. You cannot optimise for all of them simultaneously - but knowing how they work lets you make deliberate trade-offs rather than guessing.

Over time, the end of a reed that sits in the oil gets saturated and the channels become clogged - through dust, dried fragrance residue, and simply the gradual blocking of the pores. When this happens, the rate of oil travel up the reed slows, and your throw diminishes. Flipping the reeds - turning them upside down so the wet end is now in the air and the dry end is in the oil - refreshes the draw and gives an immediate burst of throw as the newly exposed wet end evaporates.

How often? Once a week is a reasonable default for most people. More often if you want stronger, more frequent throw - but remember, each flip accelerates consumption. If longevity is your priority, flip less frequently, perhaps every ten to fourteen days.
