The eight-point checklist
Here is the list I would run through before buying any home diffuser, ours or otherwise.
2. Runtime. How long do you want scent on? A 6-hour runtime suits a work session or bedtime wind-down; 16 to 18 hours covers a full night and day; a 6-litre tank can run up to 100 hours between fills for a big or perpetually dry room.
3. Cool mist, no heating element. Ultrasonic diffusers vibrate water into a cool mist rather than boiling it. That means no hot water and no burn risk - important around children and pets. Always fill with room-temperature water; never hot.
4. Auto shut-off. A good diffuser switches itself off when the tank runs dry, protecting the unit and letting you leave it running as you fall asleep. Treat this as non-negotiable.
Those first four - tank, runtime, cool mist, auto shut-off - are the safety-and-fit core. If a diffuser gets any of them wrong for your room, no amount of lights or gadgets will make you happy with it.
5. Noise. Ultrasonic units are quiet by nature, but larger tanks vary. A figure around 35 dB is library-quiet even at 6 litres. If it is for a bedroom, quiet matters more than any feature.
6. Mood light. A soft, adjustable glow turns a diffuser into a night light. The best let you hold one colour, cycle gently, or switch the light off entirely so it can go dark for sleep.
7. Remote or timer. For a bedroom this is a quiet luxury - you set a 2- or 4-hour timer and control it from bed without getting up. Not essential on a desk unit, lovely in a bedroom.
