A diffuser is a small purchase that you live with nightly, so the right features matter more than the spec sheet suggests. After making three of our own, here is the honest checklist I would use to choose any home ultrasonic diffuser - tank against room, runtime, cool mist, auto shut-off, noise, light, remote and, crucially, what fragrance it is built for.
Quick answers — read this first
What features matter most in a home diffuser? Tank size matched to your room, runtime that covers how long you want it on, cool mist with auto shut-off for safety, low noise, an adjustable light, and - often overlooked - fragrance compatibility. It must be built for a water-based fragrance, not raw oils.

How do I match tank size to my room? Bigger room, bigger tank. A ~300ml unit suits a desk or bedside; ~500ml covers a bedroom or study; a multi-litre tank suits a living room or dry winter air. Coverage figures are guides, not guarantees.

Why is fragrance compatibility a feature? Because the wrong liquid ruins the machine. Ultrasonic diffusers want a water-based fragrance; raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are too thick and clog the plate. SOSA units are built for our water-based Hotel Collection.
The short answer
Match first: tank size to room - desk (~300ml), bedroom (~500ml), living room (multi-litre).
Safety essentials: cool mist (no heating element) and auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
Comfort features: low noise, adjustable mood light, and a remote or timer for the bedroom.
The overlooked one: fragrance compatibility - water-based fragrance only, never raw oils.
Which SOSA diffuser by room (live specs)Boond ₹799 — 300ml, desk/bedside, up to 6 hrsSukoon ₹1799 — 500ml, bedroom, 16-18 hrs, remote+lightMegh ₹3499 — 6L, whole room, up to 100 hrs
Illustrative only. Match tank and runtime to the room: Boond for a desk, Sukoon for a bedroom, Megh for a living room or dry winter air.
Straight answer
What features should I look for in a home ultrasonic diffuser?
Eight things, in rough order of importance: a tank sized to your room; a runtime that covers how long you want scent on; cool mist with no heating element so there is no burn risk; an auto shut-off when the water runs dry; low noise so it does not disturb sleep or work; an adjustable mood light you can dim or switch off; a remote or timer if it is for a bedroom; and - the one most people forget - fragrance compatibility, meaning it is built for a water-based fragrance rather than raw oils. Get the first four right for safety and fit, then treat noise, light and remote as comfort, and never ignore the last one, because pouring thick raw oils into any ultrasonic diffuser clogs the plate. SOSA's Boond, Sukoon and Megh are built around exactly this checklist.
Checklist: tank vs room, runtime, cool mist + auto shut-off, low noise, mood light, remote, water-based fragrance.

The eight-point checklist

Here is the list I would run through before buying any home diffuser, ours or otherwise.

1. Tank size, matched to the room
This is the decision everything else hangs on. A tank too small for the room means constant refills; too large for a tiny room is just wasted money. Roughly: ~300ml for a desk or bedside, ~500ml for a bedroom, multi-litre for a living room or dry winter air.

2. Runtime. How long do you want scent on? A 6-hour runtime suits a work session or bedtime wind-down; 16 to 18 hours covers a full night and day; a 6-litre tank can run up to 100 hours between fills for a big or perpetually dry room.

3. Cool mist, no heating element. Ultrasonic diffusers vibrate water into a cool mist rather than boiling it. That means no hot water and no burn risk - important around children and pets. Always fill with room-temperature water; never hot.

4. Auto shut-off. A good diffuser switches itself off when the tank runs dry, protecting the unit and letting you leave it running as you fall asleep. Treat this as non-negotiable.

Those first four - tank, runtime, cool mist, auto shut-off - are the safety-and-fit core. If a diffuser gets any of them wrong for your room, no amount of lights or gadgets will make you happy with it.

5. Noise. Ultrasonic units are quiet by nature, but larger tanks vary. A figure around 35 dB is library-quiet even at 6 litres. If it is for a bedroom, quiet matters more than any feature.

6. Mood light. A soft, adjustable glow turns a diffuser into a night light. The best let you hold one colour, cycle gently, or switch the light off entirely so it can go dark for sleep.

7. Remote or timer. For a bedroom this is a quiet luxury - you set a 2- or 4-hour timer and control it from bed without getting up. Not essential on a desk unit, lovely in a bedroom.

Myth: any nice-looking diffuser will take whatever fragrance you like.
Reality: 8. Fragrance compatibility is a real feature. Ultrasonic diffusers are built for a water-based fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are too thick or solvent-heavy; they clog the misting plate and can damage the unit. Use only SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance in clean room-temperature water.

How SOSA's three map to it

I designed our range around this exact checklist, so here is the honest mapping.

Feature Boond Sukoon Megh
Tank 300ml 500ml 6L
Runtime up to 6 hrs 16-18 hrs up to 100 hrs
Coverage ~150 sq ft 270-320 sq ft ~215 sq ft (run longer for big halls)
Light colour night light 7-colour LED no light
Remote / timer no remote + 2H/4H timers mist dial, no remote
Cool mist + auto shut-off yes yes (+ overheat protection) yes
Quick verdict: Boond for a desk or bedside, Sukoon as the all-rounder that ticks the most boxes for a bedroom, Megh for a living room or dry winter air. All three are cool mist with auto shut-off, and all three are built for the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance - never raw oils.

Last, an honest boundary: no diffuser on this checklist purifies air. It scents and lightly humidifies. Choose on fit and safety first, comfort second, and you will be happy for years.

The SOSA range

SOSA makes three cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers for different rooms, each arriving with three of our water-based Hotel Collection fragrances so you can scent from day one. Prices and headline specs below are live from the SOSA store. Whichever you choose, use only the SOSA water-based fragrance - raw essential or carrier oils can clog the misting plate.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most important feature?
Tank size matched to your room. Everything else - runtime, light, remote - only matters once the diffuser is the right size for the space you want to scent.
Is auto shut-off really necessary?
Yes. It switches the unit off when the water runs dry, which protects the diffuser and lets you safely leave it running as you fall asleep. All three SOSA diffusers have it.
Do I need a remote?
Only if it is for a bedroom, where controlling it from bed is a real comfort. The Sukoon has a remote and 2H/4H timers; a desk unit like the Boond does not need one.
Why does fragrance compatibility matter so much?
Because the wrong liquid destroys the machine. Ultrasonic diffusers need a water-based fragrance; raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are too thick and clog the plate. Use only SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance.
Does a diffuser clean the air?
No. It makes a room smell good and adds a little cool humidity. Scent is not air purification and does not replace ventilation.
