Dry the room first - the part people skip
When the weather turns sticky, the instinct is to fight the mustiness with more fragrance. It does not work, because a musty smell is a moisture problem, not a scent shortage. Damp settles into soft furnishings, cupboards and corners, and until the air itself is drier, any perfume you add just sits on top of it. So the first steps have nothing to do with fragrance at all.
Here is the honest order of work. Open windows on two sides for cross-ventilation whenever the outside air is drier than inside. Run an air conditioner or a dehumidifier to pull moisture out of the room. Put moisture absorbers - the silica or calcium-chloride kind - in cupboards, under sinks and in damp corners. Wash and fully dry anything that has picked up a smell, and leave wardrobe doors open for a while so trapped air can move. Only once the room actually feels drier is it worth thinking about scent.
Myth: "A diffuser will freshen up my humid, musty room." This is the one I most want to correct. A cool-mist ultrasonic diffuser works by vibrating water into a fine mist - which means it is also a small humidifier. In already-humid weather, running it to "freshen" a damp room adds more moisture to the air and can make the musty problem worse, not better. Versailles
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine.
