Step-by-step: how to set up your reed diffuser
Nine steps sounds like a lot. In practice the whole process takes about three minutes, and most of these steps are reminders not to skip the details that actually matter.

Step 1 — Unbox
Check what is in the box before you open anything

Step 2 — Remove the stopper
Pull out the travel seal or rubber stopper carefully
Grip the bottle firmly with one hand and use the other to pull the stopper straight up and out. Do not tilt the bottle while the stopper is half out - the oil level is usually close to the neck. Set the stopper aside; you will want it if you ever need to transport the diffuser again. Step 3 — Insert the reeds

Insert the reeds into the bottle. Fan them slightly so they are not all pressed together in a tight bundle - the more surface area exposed to air, the better the release. Then, without waiting, flip them immediately. This first flip is the most important action in the whole guide. Here is why: when you flip right away, the dry ends that were in the air go down into the oil and begin drawing. The oil-touched ends go up. Step 4 — The second flip
Come back after one hour and flip again
Set a timer for an hour. When it goes off, flip the reeds again - the dry tips that were just absorbing oil go back up into the air. You will notice the scent in the room is noticeably stronger now. This double-flip on day one accelerates the saturation that would otherwise take 24-48 hours to develop. From this point on, the diffuser will release scent continuously without any further action needed until your next scheduled flip.

After the initial setup, the question most people have is: how often should I flip? The answer depends on what you want.
The trade-off
Every flip gives you a burst of scent and speeds up oil use. Less flipping gives you a quieter, steadier throw and a longer-lasting bottle.
A good general cadence for most Indian homes: once a week. Flip when you notice the scent softening - usually after five to ten days in a typical room. In hotter rooms (our summers make rooms warm even indoors), evaporation is naturally faster, so you may find the scent fades sooner and you need to flip slightly more frequently. In an AC room, evaporation slows, so you may flip less often.

Step 5 — Weekly flipping
Build it into a weekly habit - Sunday evening works well
Hold the reed bundle over a sink or a sheet of paper to catch any drips. Lift all the reeds out at once, invert them, and reinsert. It takes fifteen seconds. The burst of scent you smell immediately afterward tells you it is working. If you flip and the scent burst is very faint, check the oil level - you may be close to empty. If the reeds look very dark, stiff, or dusty, it may be time to replace them even before the oil is fully used.

Step 6 — Choose the right spot
Near a doorway or gentle airflow, not under a vent or in direct sun
The best placement is somewhere with gentle, natural air movement - a doorway you walk through several times a day, a corner where two rooms meet, a console table in an entrance hallway. As you pass, you carry the fragrance through the rest of the space. This passive circulation is far better than placing the diffuser in a still, enclosed corner where the scent simply pools and your nose adapts to it.
Avoid these spots:
Directly under or in front of an AC vent or ceiling fan. High airflow pushes evaporation too fast - you use your oil in a fraction of the time and the throw is actually less pleasant because the molecules scatter before they blend.
Windowsills in direct sunlight. Heat accelerates evaporation and can degrade some fragrance compounds, altering the scent.
On a radiator or near any heat source. Same reason.

Start with fewer, add more if needed - you can always go up
Small spaces (bathroom, powder room, a compact reading nook): 3-5 reeds. The throw in an enclosed room is naturally amplified. Too many reeds in a small bathroom can become overwhelming within minutes.
Average rooms (bedroom, home office, medium-sized living room): 6-8 reeds. This is the range most people find comfortable - present but not intrusive.
Large or open-plan spaces (open-plan living area, a large dining room): all available reeds, or consider two diffusers placed at different ends of the space.
The rule is simple: more reeds = stronger scent throw, faster oil use. Fewer reeds = subtler, longer-lasting. If you are not sure, start with five or six. After a week, decide whether to add or remove a couple. It is much easier to add than to undo an overwhelming scent in a small room.

High, stable surface; protective tray; keep oil out of reach
Children: The main risks are ingestion of the oil and glass bottle breakage if it is knocked off a surface. Place the diffuser on a shelf or console that small hands cannot reach. If oil gets on skin, wash immediately with soap and water. The absence of a flame or electrical component removes the two biggest candle hazards, but the oil itself should not be consumed.
Pets: Cats in particular lack certain liver enzymes that help process some fragrance constituents - this makes them more sensitive than dogs or humans. The oil itself, if ingested or contacted directly, can cause irritation. Place your diffuser on a high surface that pets cannot reach or knock over. Two different questions that people often conflate. Refreshing the reeds means replacing the rattan sticks - not just flipping them. Refilling means adding more oil to the bottle. Both are part of keeping a diffuser performing well over time.

Step 9 — Refresh and refill
Replace reeds when they turn dark and stiff; rinse and dry before refilling
When to replace the reeds: Rattan reeds have a finite number of capillary channels. Over time they become saturated with dried, polymerised oil that blocks the channels - the reeds turn dark and rigid, and they stop drawing effectively even when the bottle still has oil. Signs it is time: you have been flipping regularly but the scent throw is noticeably weaker, and the reeds feel stiff rather than flexible. Replace with fresh reeds at the same time as refilling.
When to refill: When the oil level drops to the bottom centimetre. Do not wait until completely empty - a little oil left ensures the new oil mixes cleanly. Before refilling, rinse the bottle with warm water, shake, empty, and allow to dry completely for a few hours. Any residue of old oil can affect the scent of the fresh oil.
