Hosts write to me asking which fragrance would make a good signature for their property, and it is the wrong first question. A signature scent is not a composition you select once and own; it is one scent, delivered identically, on every single turnover, for as long as the listing runs — including the turnovers you are not present for, the ones handled by a cleaner you have never met, and the week in August when the bottle you chose has run out. Choosing takes an afternoon. Holding is the whole discipline, and it is where almost every host loses it.
Quick answers — read this first
What a signature actually is: a repeatability decision. One scent, one delivery method, written into the turnover routine so that the person cleaning the property cannot accidentally change it.

How to choose it: by property type and register, not by what you like at home. Restrained and clean travels across strangers; loud and characterful does not.

How to hold it: the format decides. Reeds drift because they decay on a schedule nobody tracks; a scheduled machine such as the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 holds because timers and a key-lock do not have opinions.

The honest supply note: the Vaayu ships with 400ml of cold-air oil and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill. If a multi-year signature matters to you, ask SOSA about refill availability before you buy.
The short answer
Short answer: pick one restrained scent that suits the property rather than your own taste, choose a delivery format you can guarantee will be identical on a turnover you do not attend, and write that format into the cleaning checklist as a line item. Then do not change it — not seasonally, not because you got bored, not because a different bottle was on offer. The consistency is the signature. Nobody can promise it moves a rating, and I will not.
The mechanism: a returning or reviewing guest does not remember a note list; they remember whether the place smelled the same as it did last time and whether that smell belonged to the property rather than to a cleaning cupboard. Repetition is what converts a pleasant fragrance into a recognisable one. A format that decays on its own timetable — a reed bottle at week nine, a candle nobody lights — cannot repeat, which is why hosts drift.
Shop: for a large or open-plan property, the Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ and can be scheduled and locked. For one normal room, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 with Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. For a studio or a bedroom, a reed diffuser from ₹749. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
How do I create a signature scent for my Airbnb and actually keep it?
1. Choose for the property, not for yourself. You are scenting a space that houses strangers with tastes and sensitivities you will never know. That argues for a restrained, clean register — white tea, soft woods, light citrus — rather than the gourmand or the heavy floral you might love in your own bedroom. A signature that half your guests find too much is not a signature; it is a recurring complaint.

2. Choose a format you can guarantee on a turnover you do not attend. This is the decision that actually determines whether you keep a signature. Anything that needs a person to remember it at the right hour will be forgotten on the day the flight lands late.

3. Write it into the cleaning checklist as a line item. Not "make the flat smell nice" — the specific product, the specific place it sits, and the explicit instruction not to substitute. Your housekeeper is the person who holds your signature, whether or not you have told them so.

4. Ventilate before you scent, every time. Fragrance is not a corrective. Windows open, extractor on, bins out, drains run, then fragrance. A scent layered over a closed-flat smell produces a third smell nobody designed, and guests read it correctly as concealment.

5. Hold it through the seasons. The seasonal switch feels like hospitality and is the commonest way a signature dies. A repeat guest noticing the place smells different is the exact opposite of what you set out to build.

6. Know the supply position before you commit. The Vaayu ships with 400ml of cold-air oil and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. The water-based Hotel Collection is a different product for ultrasonic machines and does not go in a Vaayu. Ask SOSA about current refill availability before you build a three-year signature on it.

Nothing on this page claims that scenting changes a rating, a review score, a booking or an occupancy figure — no one can promise that. The reed compositions are composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, the machines are made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: a signature scent is one restrained composition, one delivery format that does not need a human at the right hour, one line on the cleaning checklist, and no seasonal changes. Choose the format first — it decides whether you can hold the discipline. Vaayu ₹11,999 for a whole floor, Sukoon ₹1,899 for a room, reeds from ₹749 for a studio.

The format that holds a signature
SOSA Vaayu · waterless cold-air nebuliser ₹11,999
Pressurised air atomises undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist — no water, no heat. Coverage up to 1000m³, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft depending on ceiling height. A 400ml refillable tank rated at 90+ days per fill, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and a key-lock so a guest cannot change your settings. Under 38 dB, 5W, 0.9 kg, freestanding or wall-mounted. Four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances at 100ml each in the box, in one of three combos chosen at checkout. No separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at present — the 400ml supplied is the whole supply today.

Part one — choosing a signature you can actually keep

There are three decisions inside what hosts think of as one decision, and they are usually made in the wrong order. Most people start with the fragrance, because that is the enjoyable part, and discover the delivery problem in month three. I would reverse it: decide how the scent will arrive in the property, then decide what it will be, then decide who is responsible for it. The format constrains everything downstream, and the person doing your turnovers constrains the format. A signature that only works when you are personally standing in the flat an hour before check-in is not a signature — it is a hobby.

1
DECISION ONE · THE REGISTER
Choose for strangers, which means choosing restraint
Your own home can carry a strong, opinionated fragrance because there are three of you and you all agreed to it. A listing carries a different person every four nights, and you know nothing about any of them — what they find pleasant, what they find cloying, what their previous week smelled like. The register that survives that variety is the restrained one: clean woods, white tea, soft citrus, a dry cedar. Not because it is more sophisticated, but because it is harder to dislike and easier to read as "this building is well kept" rather than "somebody sprayed something." The louder and sweeter a composition is, the more it behaves like a personality in the room, and a personality is exactly what a guest did not book.
The test: if you can name the fragrance from the doormat, it is too strong for a property housing strangers.
2
DECISION TWO · THE DELIVERY
Whatever cannot be scheduled will eventually be skipped
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuserSukoon₹1,899 · 270–320 sq ftThree formats, three failure modes. A reed diffuser is beautifully low-maintenance and completely constant, which is its strength in a bedroom and its weakness as a signature: it decays on its own timetable, a 50ml runs six to eight weeks, and nobody on a turnover is tracking week numbers. A sprayed fragrance depends entirely on a human being present at the right hour and is the first thing dropped when a checkout runs late. A scheduled machine — a Sukoon at ₹1,899 for one room, or a Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a whole floor — removes the human from the loop, which is the only reliable way to make a thing happen the same way forty times running. The Vaayu adds a key-lock, so a guest who finds the buttons cannot rewrite your setting for the next arrival.
The rule: pick the format by how your worst turnover goes, not your best one.
3
DECISION THREE · THE OWNER
Somebody holds your signature, and it is probably not you
Ask a host what their signature scent is and they will name a fragrance. Ask their housekeeper the same question and you will get the truthful answer, which is usually the floor cleaner. The property smells of whatever the last person to clean it used, and everything you have chosen sits on top of that. So the signature has to be written down as an instruction rather than held as an intention: which product, where it sits, when it runs, and an explicit line saying not to substitute a supermarket air freshener when the usual one runs low. Add a second line about ventilation — windows open through the clean, extractor on in the kitchen, bins emptied and drains run — because scenting an unaired flat is the one thing guaranteed to produce the smell you were trying to avoid.

Part two — the drift audit

Nobody abandons a signature scent deliberately. It erodes, in six identifiable ways, and each one has a fix that costs less than the fragrance did. This table is the audit I would run on a listing that "used to smell lovely and somehow does not any more."

Where a signature slips
Six drift points, what the guest meets instead, and the fix
Drift point What the guest actually meets Why it happens The fix Cost
The vacant week ★ Closed-flat air — warm, flat, faintly of drains and fabric Nothing runs between guests, and nobody opens a window A timer that runs whether or not the property is occupied Free to schedule
The cleaner's own products Phenyl and bleach under your fragrance — reads as concealment The checklist says "clean", not "clean and then ventilate" One written line: air the flat through the clean, scent afterwards Free
The seasonal switch A different property from the one they remember It feels like hospitality. It is the opposite of a signature Hold one scent. Change the linen and the fruit bowl instead Free
Running out mid-month Two weeks of nothing, then a sudden return Consumables are tracked by memory rather than by date Count days per fill and diarise the reorder before you need it Free
Guest tampering The machine off, or on maximum, for the next three arrivals Accessible buttons and an unfamiliar device Vaayu key-lock, or place the unit out of easy reach Included
The second listing Two properties that smell like two different businesses Each was solved separately, months apart Decide the scent once at the portfolio level, not per property Free
The honest caveat: every fix above is an improvement to the guest's experience of arrival, which is a real and describable thing. None of it is a claim about ratings, reviews, bookings, nightly rate or occupancy — there is no evidence for any of those, and I would not sell you a machine on the basis of one. Fragrance also does not clean air, remove an underlying smell or change how anyone feels. Ventilate first; scent second.

The three formats a signature can live in
The SOSA principle
A signature is not the scent you love. It is the scent you can repeat.
Choose the one you can guarantee on the fortieth turnover, handled by someone else, on a day everything ran late. That constraint eliminates most of the shortlist, and what survives it is your signature.

Part three — why hosts drift, and when a signature is the wrong answer

The drift almost always begins with boredom, and the boredom is yours rather than the guest's. You visit the property, you have smelled this fragrance forty times, and it registers as tired — so you buy something new. What has actually happened is olfactory adaptation: your nose stops reporting a constant within minutes, and adapts hardest in a space you know well. The guest arriving from a car and a lift has none of that history and meets the scent at full strength. This is the single most expensive misreading in host scenting, because it converts a working signature into a rotation, and a rotation is just a series of first impressions with nothing behind them. If you want to know what your property smells like, ask the cleaner on their first visit of the week, or step outside for fifteen minutes and attend to the first three seconds when you return.

The second cause is supply, and it deserves stating plainly rather than being discovered. Every scenting format is a consumable with a clock on it. A 50ml reed diffuser runs six to eight weeks and a 130ml runs fourteen to eighteen; a Sukoon runs sixteen to eighteen hours on low per 500ml fill and takes water-based Hotel Collection fragrance at ₹299 for 15ml, ₹999 for 100ml or ₹1,799 for 300ml. The Vaayu is specified at 400ml and 90+ days per fill, and it arrives with exactly 400ml — four fragrances of 100ml each. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil, and the water-based Hotel Collection is a different product that must not be put in a Vaayu despite sharing scent names. If you are building a signature intended to run for years, that is a question to put to SOSA before you spend ₹11,999, not after. I would rather lose the sale than have you find out in month four.

When a signature scent is the wrong answer. Three situations, and I would talk you out of it in all of them. First, if your listing regularly hosts guests who declare fragrance sensitivity — or if you have chosen to market the property as fragrance-free — then the correct signature is scrupulous ventilation and nothing else, and it is a perfectly good one. Second, if the property is a studio or a single room under about 300 sq ft, a machine is the wrong tool at any price and one reed diffuser by the door does the entire job for ₹749 to ₹849; spending ₹11,999 on that space is not a signature, it is an overpayment. Third, if you cannot guarantee consistency — a co-hosted property, a rotating cleaning agency, a listing you visit twice a year — then a half-held signature is worse than none, because an inconsistent scent reads as an inconsistent standard. The companion piece to this guide argues that case in full, and it is the more useful page for a good number of hosts.

Your nose is the least reliable instrument in the property. The guest arriving from the lift is the honest witness, and they only get one arrival.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — the signature stack, by property

What I would actually put in each kind of listing, with the limit of each stated rather than glossed. The pattern most larger properties settle into is not one machine everywhere — it is one scheduled machine on the connected common floor, and passive reeds behind the bedroom doors that are usually shut.

The signature stack
By property, with the honest limit of each
Property What holds the signature Why this and not more Spend
Studio or 1RK under ~300 sq ft ★ One reed diffuser by the door, replaced on a diarised date No electricity, nothing for a guest to touch, nothing to schedule ₹749–₹849
1BHK / small 2BHK A Sukoon in the living area on a timer, reeds in the bedroom and bath 270–320 sq ft is a genuine room, and timers make it repeatable ₹1,899 + ₹299 fragrance
Open-plan 3BHK / duplex One Vaayu on the common floor, reeds behind closed bedroom doors Scent does not pass a shut door; the machine does the connected volume ₹11,999 + reeds
Villa, multi-floor Vaayu on the main floor, treated as its own scenting problem per level Vertical air movement is unreliable; a stairwell is not a distribution system From ₹11,999
Fragrance-free by policy Ventilation discipline, laundered textiles, drains run, nothing else A legitimate signature. Do not scent a property you have advertised as unscented Free
Not the answer: Megh 6L ~100 hours of runtime but only about 215 sq ft of coverage A runtime and humidity machine — it covers less than the Sukoon, never a coverage upgrade ₹3,499
Honest notes for buyers: the Vaayu is ₹11,999 and ships with 400ml of cold-air oil as four 100ml fragrances; no separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at the time of writing, so confirm current availability with SOSA if long-term supply matters to you. That cold-air oil is a different product from the water-based Hotel Collection made for ultrasonic machines — the two share scent names and are not interchangeable in either direction, and reed oil goes in neither. Coverage of "up to 1000m³" is a volume figure, so ceiling height decides whether 2,000 or 3,000 sq ft is honest for your property. Warranty terms, installation service and spare parts are not published; ask SOSA directly rather than assuming. Nothing here claims an effect on ratings, reviews, bookings or occupancy, and nothing here is a health, mood or air-purification claim. Reed compositions are handmade in small batches in Pune; the machines are made in India. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser for a one-room Airbnb
If one room is the whole problem
SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ultrasonic ₹1,899
Covers 270–320 sq ft, runs sixteen to eighteen hours on low per fill, and comes with a remote and steady, 2H and 4H timers — which is what makes it repeatable rather than occasional. Three 15ml Hotel Collection scents are included in the box, and further water-based Hotel Collection fragrance is ₹299 for 15ml, ₹999 for 100ml or ₹1,799 for 300ml. For a 1BHK listing this is the honest answer, and it costs a sixth of the machine most hosts ask me about first. It is water-based and adds a little humidity — worth knowing in a coastal monsoon.

A note from Sonal

The first time a host described their signature scent to me, they gave me four fragrances and a season for each. I asked what a guest returning in March would meet if they had first stayed in October, and there was a long pause. That pause is the whole subject. A rotation is a perfectly nice way to enjoy fragrance in your own home, where you are the only person who experiences the sequence. In a listing, nobody experiences the sequence — each guest experiences one point in it, and the point they get is arbitrary.

What I have learned from hosts since is that the fragrance is rarely the failure. The failure is a checklist that says "make it nice", a cleaner who was never told what the signature was, and a bottle that emptied in a week nobody was counting. Those are operational problems wearing a perfumery costume, and they are cheaper to fix than a new product.

I will also say what this page cannot: I do not know, and nobody honestly does, whether any of this changes a rating or a booking. What I can describe is what a guest meets in the first ninety seconds, because that is observable and it is the thing you are actually buying. Everything we make is composed in Pune or built in India, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a signature scent for my Airbnb?
Choose the delivery format first, because it decides whether you can keep the scent consistent on a turnover you do not attend. Then choose a restrained composition — clean woods, white tea, soft citrus — rather than the fragrance you would pick for your own bedroom. Then write it into the cleaning checklist by name, with an instruction not to substitute.
Should I change my Airbnb's scent with the seasons?
No, if a signature is what you are building. A seasonal switch means a returning guest meets a different property from the one they remember, which is the exact opposite of the effect. Change the linen, the throw and the fruit bowl instead — those read as seasonal without breaking the constant.
Why does my property smell different to my guests than it does to me?
Olfactory adaptation. Your nose stops reporting a constant within minutes and adapts hardest in a space you know well, so a working signature reads as faded to you and arrives at full strength for a guest who has just come in from outside. Step out for fifteen minutes and attend to the first three seconds when you return, or ask your cleaner on their first visit of the week.
Can I buy more Vaayu oil to keep my signature running?
Not at the moment. The Vaayu ships with 400ml of cold-air oil as four 100ml fragrances, and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill. The water-based Hotel Collection at ₹299–₹1,799 is made for ultrasonic machines and must not be used in a Vaayu, even though the scent names overlap. Ask SOSA about current refill availability before you commit if long-term supply matters to you.
Will a signature scent improve my listing's rating or bookings?
Nobody can promise that, and I will not. What a signature does is make the first ninety seconds of an arrival consistent and deliberate, which is a real thing a guest experiences. Ratings, reviews, occupancy and nightly rate depend on far more than a smell, and there is no data connecting fragrance to any of them. Treat this as a hospitality standard, not a revenue lever.
