Attar and perfume are often discussed as if one is a traditional version of the other, which is not really what separates them. They are two different delivery systems for the same idea. One is a concentrated oil you roll onto skin; the other is a solution carried by alcohol that you spray into the air near you. Almost everything else that follows - how far it travels, how long it lasts, how much of it you own, how much shelf it takes - comes out of that single difference.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the difference between an attar and a perfume? An attar is a concentrated fragrance oil with no alcohol, applied to the wrist or neck from a small roll-on. A conventional perfume is carried by alcohol and sprayed, so it projects outward and evaporates faster. The oil stays nearer the skin and unfolds more slowly.

Which is better as a gift, an attar or a perfume? An attar is the better gift more often, for practical reasons. It costs less to try at ₹379 for 3ML, it takes almost no shelf space, and it is a format most people do not already own, so it is less likely to duplicate something he has.

Does an attar last longer than a perfume? It usually stays on the skin longer and travels less far. An alcohol spray announces itself across a room and then thins out; an oil sits close and holds. Which one is better depends entirely on whether he wants to be noticed at arm's length or across a table.
The short answer
Short answer: Oil against alcohol is the whole difference: an attar sits close to the skin and holds, a spray projects outward and thins. As a gift the attar wins more often, because it costs less to try and takes no shelf.
The pick: a SOSA fragrance gift - alcohol-free, still in use months later, from ₹379.
Honest note: what makes a gift read as romantic is format and occasion, not how much it cost.
Gifts for a friend - at a glanceFormat decides the signal - a space reads differently from skinHis car, his room, his desk - no statement attached₹379 to ₹3,999 across every kind of friendSpending less does not make it less personal
Whether a gift reads as romantic comes down to format, occasion and privacy - not price. A fragrance for his car or his room carries no statement; one for his skin does. SOSA's range runs Rs 379 to Rs 3,999, alcohol-free and handmade in India.
Straight answer
Attar or perfume - which should I actually buy him?
Take the four practical differences in turn, then decide.

What carries the scent. An attar is a concentrated oil and nothing else. A conventional perfume is fragrance dissolved in alcohol, which evaporates on contact with skin and carries the scent outward with it. That is the mechanism behind every other difference below.

How it is applied, and how far it goes. An attar is rolled onto the inside of the wrist or behind the ear - a small, controlled amount, staying near the skin, noticed by people who are already close. A spray puts fragrance into the air around him and arrives before he does. Neither is better. A man who likes his fragrance to be private will prefer the oil; one who enjoys a scent that fills the space will find the oil too quiet.

How long each lasts. The oil generally stays on skin longer, because there is no alcohol lifting it away, and it changes more slowly. A spray is at its loudest in the first hour and softer after that. I am not going to give you hour counts, because they depend on his skin, the weather and how much he puts on, and anybody quoting exact numbers is guessing.

How much room it takes. A 3ML roll-on is the size of a thumb. A 50ML bottle is a shelf item. If he already owns fragrance, this matters more than it sounds - the small format is the one he has space for.

What SOSA has in each. Attars: Adaa ₹379, Ameeri ₹385, Mastani ₹389 and Nawaab ₹399 at 3ML, rising to ₹669 to ₹699 at 6ML and ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 at 12ML, with the trio at ₹1,055. On the perfume side there is the Perfume Dupe recreation at ₹599 for 10ML, ₹1,799 for 50ML and ₹3,499 for 100ML, where you name a fragrance and we make our own interpretation of it, and the Bespoke Signature Perfume at ₹1,499 for 10ML and ₹5,999 for 50ML, built from a brief. Both are made rather than picked off a shelf, so ask us first if the gift is tied to a date, and treat a recreation as an interpretation rather than a copy.

Neither format belongs to a particular kind of wearer - the same attars and the same recreations are offered to anybody who asks. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: oil sits close to the skin and holds, alcohol projects outward and thins - and the small oil is usually the better gift.
If he drives, the safest starting point is a hanging car perfume at ₹449 - it goes in his car rather than on him, so it carries no signal at all. If he does not drive, a reed diffuser from ₹749 does the same job for his room.
from ₹449

Oil against alcohol, wrist against spray

Four differences matter when you are choosing between the two as a present, and three of them are about him rather than about chemistry.

1
Projection
Close and slow, or outward and immediate
This is the decision. An oil is noticed by somebody sitting next to him; a spray is noticed by the room. If he has ever said he does not like wearing much, or works somewhere small and shared, the oil is the considerate format and he will probably recognise that. If he enjoys a fragrance that announces itself, an attar at ₹399 will read as underpowered and you should not buy him one.
Tip: Ask whether he wants to be smelled at arm's length or across a table.
2
Cost of trying
The attar is a far cheaper experiment
At ₹379 to ₹399 for 3ML, an attar is a small enough commitment that a wrong guess costs almost nothing and a right one is a genuine find. A 50ML anything is a decision made on his behalf. This is why I steer most gift-buyers towards the oil even when both formats would suit - not because it is better, but because the downside is smaller and the upside is the same.
3
Duplication
He probably owns sprays and probably does not own oils
Most people with any interest in fragrance have a row of sprays and nothing else. Buying another one means competing with what is already there; buying an oil means adding something the shelf does not contain. If your friend is a collector this is decisive, and the three-attar set at ₹1,055 makes it a proper present rather than a curiosity.
Tip: The format he does not own is almost always the better gift than the scent he might.
The SOSA principle
Alcohol carries fragrance outward. Oil keeps it where you put it. Everything else follows from that.
Longevity, projection, bottle size and shelf space are all downstream of one question, which is what is carrying the scent.

Choosing between the two formats

Decide by how he likes to be noticed, and by what is already on his shelf.

The SOSA gift edit
Attar or perfume, by what you know about him
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
He likes fragrance kept close and private An attar from ₹379 for 3ML - oil at the wrist, noticed at conversational distance.
He likes a scent that fills the room A sprayed perfume suits him better - the Perfume Dupe recreation from ₹599 for 10ML, made to your brief.
He already owns a shelf of sprays The three-attar set at ₹1,055 - three oils to compare, and a format the shelf does not contain.
You want the most personal version of either The Bespoke Signature Perfume from ₹1,499 for 10ML, built from a brief rather than chosen.

If you have landed on the oil and want the category properly explained before you buy, Attar for him does that in plain terms. If the worry underneath the question is really about how a worn fragrance will be read between the two of you, Is perfume too personal answers that directly. The attar collection starts at ₹379.

The SOSA gift edit

Every SOSA gift is alcohol-free, long-lasting and ready to hand over, handmade in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by format, which is what decides how a gift reads.

The SOSA gift edit for a friend
Five answers by format and signal - from a ₹379 attar to a ₹3,999 car diffuser
Gift Best for What it says, and what it costs From
Hanging car perfume Any friend who drives Goes in his car, not on him - the format that carries no signal at all ₹449
Car spray set of 3 A close friend · feels chosen Three named scents in one box, still comfortably under a thousand ₹699
Reed diffuser 50ML His room, flat or desk Flame-free, no plug, no water - works in a rented room from day one ₹749
Attar roll-on 3ML A friend whose taste you know Alcohol-free oil at the wrist - worn, so only where you actually know him ₹379
SOSA Safar A friend who genuinely drives Waterless car diffuser - a car object, not a travel one, see the note below ₹3,999

Three honest notes. SOSA Safar is a car diffuser, not a travel product - it belongs with a friend who actually drives, and a solid perfume tin or attar roll-on is the genuinely portable gift for someone who flies. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil; the Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

We get this question more than almost any other, and it is usually asked slightly apologetically: how do I give him something nice without it looking like something else? It is a fair question and it has a practical answer, so it is worth saying the answer out loud rather than being coy about it.

A gift reads as romantic because of format, occasion and privacy - almost never because of price. A fragrance you choose for someone to wear on their skin is a statement about how you would like them to smell. That is intimate whether or not you meant it to be. A fragrance for his car, his room or his desk is a gift for a place, and a place makes no such statement. That single distinction settles most of these questions before you have looked at a single product.

Two things follow that people get backwards. Spending less does not make a gift less romantic - a small private gift with no occasion attached can read as far more personal than a larger practical one. And a gift handed over at a birthday with other people in the room reads differently from the same object given quietly. If you are unsure, change the format or change the moment, not the budget. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an attar and a perfume?
An attar is a concentrated fragrance oil with no alcohol in it, rolled onto the wrist or neck. A conventional perfume is fragrance carried in alcohol and sprayed, so it projects outward as the alcohol evaporates. The oil stays near the skin and unfolds slowly; the spray announces itself and then softens.
Which makes the better gift, an attar or a perfume?
An attar, more often than not. At ₹379 to ₹399 for 3ML it costs little to try, it takes almost no shelf space, and most people who like fragrance own sprays and no oils, so it is far less likely to duplicate something he already has.
Does an attar last longer on the skin?
It usually stays put longer and travels less far, because there is no alcohol lifting it off. How long exactly depends on his skin, the weather and how much he applies, and anyone quoting you a precise number of hours is guessing rather than measuring.
What perfume options does SOSA make?
The Perfume Dupe recreation at ₹599 for 10ML, ₹1,799 for 50ML and ₹3,499 for 100ML, where you name a fragrance and we make our own interpretation of it, and the Bespoke Signature Perfume at ₹1,499 for 10ML or ₹5,999 for 50ML, which is built from a brief. Both are made rather than stocked, so ask us about it before buying if the gift is tied to a particular date.
He wears a lot of fragrance. Would an attar disappoint him?
Possibly, and it is fair to think about. An oil is a quieter format by design, so someone who enjoys a scent arriving before he does may find it underpowered. In that case a sprayed perfume is the honest recommendation, or give him the oil for days when a big fragrance is the wrong choice.
