Founder Diaries · New Parent & Baby Shower Gifting Guides
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
The amount is set by your relationship rather than by the occasion, and it falls into four fairly clear brackets. It is also worth saying plainly what most guides will not: in this particular category the returns on spending more flatten early, and a cheaper gift sent at the right time consistently outperforms an expensive one sent at the wrong one.
Quick answers — read this first
How much should you spend on a gift for new parents? Rs 400 to Rs 700 for a colleague or acquaintance, Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 for a friend, Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 for a close friend or sibling, and Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 for a parent or a group pooling.

Does spending more help? Up to a point. Above about Rs 1,500 the returns flatten, because what this household needs is duration and simplicity rather than size, and both are available cheaply.

What outperforms a bigger budget? Timing. Everything arrives in the first fortnight and stops at six weeks, so a Rs 379 gift at week seven beats a Rs 3,000 gift on day three.
The short answer
Short answer: Spend by relationship: Rs 400 to Rs 700 for a colleague or acquaintance, Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 for a friend, Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 for a close friend or sibling, and Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 for a parent or a pooled group. Returns flatten above about Rs 1,500, because this household needs duration and simplicity rather than size. Timing beats budget: a Rs 379 gift at week seven outperforms a Rs 3,000 gift on day three.
The pick: a SOSA return gift - consumable, no shelf space, from ₹299 a head.
Bulk: 10 to 200+ pieces quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531. Rates are not published here.
Gifts for the parents - at a glanceEverybody gifts the baby - almost nobody gifts the parentsNo setup, no decisions, usable with one handConsumable - their home has no spare surfaceFrom ₹299 · for her, him or both
These are gifts for the adults. SOSA does not make products for babies and nothing here is intended for a nursery or for a baby's things - the point is that the mother and father receive something addressed to them. Gifts start at Rs 299, and anything can be checked on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 first.
Straight answer
How much should you spend on a gift for new parents?
By relationship, not occasion. Colleague or acquaintance: ₹400 to ₹700 - a coconut-soy candle at ₹379 or a hanging car perfume at ₹449. Friend: ₹700 to ₹1,500 - a reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849, or the Attar Trio at ₹1,055. Close friend or sibling: ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 - a 130ml reed diffuser from ₹1,249, or a complete Sukoon system at ₹2,198 with Hotel Collection. Parent, or a group pooling: ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 - a diffuser with a 500ml refill at ₹4,748, or the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999. Above about ₹1,500 the returns flatten - and timing beats budget outright. Ask on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Four brackets by relationship. Returns flatten above Rs 1,500, and timing beats budget.
If you want one answer for a mixed guest list: hanging car perfume from ₹449, because almost every adult guest drives and almost nobody has done anything about their car. Bulk quantities quoted on WhatsApp.
from ₹299

Four brackets, and where the returns stop

Two questions hide inside this one, and they have different answers. The first is what amount is socially correct, which depends entirely on your relationship and has fairly settled conventions. The second is what amount actually buys a better gift, which in this category stops mattering earlier than most people expect. Take the social question first. Four brackets cover almost every case. A colleague, an acquaintance, a neighbour or somebody in the extended family who sees them twice a year sits at four hundred to seven hundred rupees. That is not a small gesture here - it buys a coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees or a hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine, both of which are complete, useful objects rather than token ones. A friend sits at seven hundred to fifteen hundred. That buys a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees, which runs for two or three months with nothing to do, or the Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five, which divides so each parent takes one they chose. A close friend or a sibling sits at one thousand to two thousand five hundred: a 130ml reed diffuser from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine rupees, or a complete Sukoon system at two thousand one hundred and ninety-eight - the one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine rupee machine with the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine, three to six drops per tank. A parent, or a group of friends or colleagues pooling, sits at two thousand five hundred to five thousand: a reed diffuser with a five hundred millilitre refill at four thousand seven hundred and forty-eight rupees, a hotel-inspired set at four thousand four hundred and ninety-nine, or the SOSA Safar waterless car diffuser at three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine. Those brackets have an upper bound as well as a lower one, and the upper one is real. A gift far above the level of everything else the household receives is awkward rather than generous: it obliges the recipients in a way they cannot repay, and at an event like a shower it quietly exposes the guests who gave carefully within a budget. Being appropriate is most of the job. Now the more interesting question, which is where extra money stops buying a better gift. In this category it flattens early - somewhere around fifteen hundred rupees - and the reason is structural rather than a matter of taste. What a new-parent household actually benefits from is duration, simplicity and the absence of demands: something that keeps working without being remembered, needs no surface, no setting and no decision, and can be used with one hand in an unplanned four minutes. All of those qualities are available cheaply. A three hundred and seventy-nine rupee candle needs one action. A seven hundred and forty-nine rupee reed diffuser needs one minute and then runs for months. Beyond that, extra money buys larger size, a machine, or a longer supply - and only the longer supply is reliably an improvement, because size is a storage problem and a machine is a decision. That is why this whole section keeps recommending duration over scale: from fifteen hundred rupees upward, the honest way to spend more is to buy months rather than objects, which means refills - three hundred millilitres at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine, five hundred at three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine - rather than a bigger box. And there is one rule that applies at every level above a thousand rupees: complete, always. A machine with nothing to run in it is a shopping instruction wrapped in good packaging, handed to two people whose daily list is already longer than the day. The three systems do not interchange - reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action, ultrasonic machines take the water-based concentrate, the waterless nebuliser runs undiluted oil - and reed oil must never go into a machine. Now the part that genuinely outperforms a bigger budget, and it costs nothing at all. Every gift this household receives arrives in the same wave - the first ten to fourteen days after the birth, which is exactly when they have the least capacity to notice anything. Parcels are stacked unopened, cards are read later meaning never, and anything needing a decision is put down and rediscovered in a month. Then at about six weeks it stops dead: the visitors thin out, the messages taper, the relatives who came to stay go home, and the two of them are alone with a routine that has not settled. A three hundred and seventy-nine rupee gift arriving at week seven is the only thing in the room, gets their full attention, and carries a message no card needs to spell out. A three thousand rupee gift arriving on day three is one parcel in a stack of twenty. If you have to choose between spending more and sending later, send later. Two smaller notes on amount. First, do not split a budget into two small gifts to make it look bigger: two halves read as two samples while one properly chosen object reads as a decision. Second, if you are buying for a couple, remember that in most households the father will receive nothing at all from anybody, because no shop stocks a shelf for fathers and the purchase is never prompted - so at any bracket, a gift that reaches him is doing something no amount of money spent elsewhere can. A four hundred and forty-nine rupee hanging car perfume is used by whoever drives, which in these months is mostly him. To be plain about the range on this site: SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing here is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a baby's belongings. Everything above is for the two adults, which is the only column nobody else is filling.

1
The social answer
Four brackets, set by relationship
₹400 to ₹700 for a colleague or acquaintance. ₹700 to ₹1,500 for a friend. ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 for a close friend or sibling. ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 for a parent or a group pooling.
Tip: Each bracket has an upper bound too. Far above the rest of the table is awkward rather than generous.
2
Where returns flatten
Around ₹1,500, and structurally
What helps is duration, simplicity and the absence of demands - and all of those are cheap. A ₹379 candle needs one action; a ₹749 reed diffuser needs one minute and runs for months.
3
What beats budget
Timing, and it is free
Everything arrives in the first fortnight when nobody can absorb it, and stops dead at six weeks. A ₹379 gift at week seven is the only thing in the room; a ₹3,000 gift on day three is one parcel in a stack of twenty.
Tip: If you must choose between spending more and sending later, send later.
The SOSA principle
Above about fifteen hundred rupees, extra money buys size, a machine or a longer supply - and only the longer supply is reliably an improvement.
At any bracket, a gift that reaches the father does something no amount spent elsewhere can.

What each bracket actually buys

What each bracket actually buys, priced exactly. Everything listed is complete as described - nothing needs a second purchase to function.

A note from Sonal

When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.

That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.

One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you spend on a gift for new parents?
Rs 400 to Rs 700 for a colleague, Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 for a friend, Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 for a close friend or sibling, and Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 for a parent or a pooled group.
Does spending more make a better gift?
Only up to about Rs 1,500. What helps here is duration, simplicity and the absence of demands, and all of those are available cheaply.
What is the honest way to spend more?
Buy months rather than objects - refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml or Rs 3,499 for 500ml - rather than a bigger box, which is a storage problem.
Can I spend too much?
Yes. A gift far above the rest of what they receive obliges them in a way they cannot repay, and at a shower it exposes guests who gave carefully within a budget.
What beats a bigger budget?
Timing. Everything arrives in the first fortnight when they can least absorb it and stops at six weeks, so a small gift at week seven outperforms a large one on day three.
